To be bothered by another giving me dirty looks

I was getting my nails done yesterday and had the strangest experience!

A woman came in who had the appointment after me. My nail tech said to her, “Hi, I’ll be with you in a minute”, and she sat down and waited.

Anyway, from the moment she sat down, she literally stared at me for the rest of my appointment. Every time I looked up, she was looking directly at me. Not just a quick glance, but a proper, constant stare!

When I eventually got up to get my coat and bag, she gave me the dirtiest look imaginable and looked me up and down as if I was actual garbage. She then carried on staring at me!
I'm in my mid-twenties and would say she was around the same age as me.
I know I probably shouldn't let something like this bother me, and obviously I have no idea what she was thinking, but I came away feeling really uncomfortable. It was such a horrible feeling to have someone looking at you like that for absolutely no apparent reason.

I was dressed completely normally and appropriately, nothing revealing or out of the ordinary, so I genuinely can't think of anything that would have prompted it.
Has anyone else experienced something like this? What do you think makes someone behave like that? I know I should just forget about it, but it's really playing on my mind! Am I being oversensitive or would you have found this weird too?

Thank you x

I bet she mistook you for someone else. The school bully who she hasn't seen since she was 11, or something like that. Forget it - it's about her, not you!

I would have found it weird and it would have upset me OP. But I am accept that I am lacking in self confidence and I also ruminate on things like that. I know very well that the rational response is to shrug experiences like that off as not being worth head space.
You did nothing wrong. There was no rational reason for her to be looking askance at you. It may have been something as simple as her being annoyed she was having to wait because she thought you had jumped the appointment queue with the nail technician.
Please don't be me and let this worry you . It's a "her" issue, not a " you " issue.

Some people are just arseholes. Maybe she thought your appointment was taking too long. It’s not you, it’s her. God only knows what she thought staring at you would achieve.

40coats · 22/10/2026 10:20

Maybe she thought you were delaying her appt by having ran late or asking for extra.
Either way it's her issue not yours. Normal rational people don't sit there giving other people dirty looks even if there's a reason behind their dislike.

purplecorkheart · 22/10/2026 10:22

I would guess that the technician was running slightly late or had been double booked and she thought that you were holding her up. I would not worry about it.

BillieWiper · 22/10/2026 10:26

I don't know how likely this is but could she be friends with someone who's not keen on you/you fell out with? Dating an ex of yours? Like she's recognized you from afar connected to some unflattering gossip? But you've never seen her?

Or she's done that but it's mistaken identity?

Either way it's impolite of her and odd but don't bother dwelling on it. If I saw her again I'd probably smile. Kill with kindness!

I’m pretty new to the area so no ! It was the strangest thing she looked like she had pure hatred in her eyes! X

Gawd she sounds demonic! Maybe ask the nail lady if she knows her next time, if you do see her again. She could just have been having a bad day and she was very impatient about waiting for the nail tech, so she was staring you down to kind of say 'hurry up'?! Clearly still rude. I hope most others round your new area are nicer?

I think that's the most logical explanation. I doubt if it was personal. In any case you wouldn't have noticed how much she was staring if you hadn't been looking at her as well.

ginasevern · 22/10/2026 12:44

She's probably just a weirdo or a nasty piece of work and known for it. Or maybe she has mental health issues. It isn't nice OP, but hopefully you'll never see her again.

MyAuntieHelenIsOneOfThem · 22/10/2026 12:49

Surely she was just annoyed she had to wait because your appointment overran, and chose to be weird about it? I can’t say I’d give it a second thought.
