To think a wedding is a celebration of love

And not a choreographed performance.
If someone wants to go to a registry office then have a small meal in a pub after and spend 2 grand that's up to them.
If someone wants to spend 40 grand and have a luxury wedding in a castle with all the trimmings that's up to them too.

It's people who are small-minded and think there is only one way to have a wedding, I've found out ours has been 'commented on' by friends because it didn't have certain 'traditions' that apparently all weddings should have.

I even had a friend tell me they were 'stressed' because they didn't know the colour scheme 8 months in advance. It's ridiculous, who cares?
We weren't interested in things like that, we just wanted a celebration and party.
I just told people we were happy with what we were doing, I'm fed up with others forcing their own opinions onto you and not just letting people do what they want.
We weren't interested in getting into debt and we don't have that sort of money, I wouldn't dream of commenting on other people's weddings.

Were they disparaging when commenting?

I totally agree with you OP.
If you and your now spouse had the wedding you wanted and it gave you pleasure then that is wonderful. And you shouldn't take any notice of other people telling you what you should or shouldn't have done.

Some people were shocked that dh2b and I walked down the 'aisle' together, holding hands. So what? Not their wedding. As you say, OP, a wedding is an expression of the couple's love and commitment to each other. Coming in together expressed that.

YANBU.

But YABU to get wound up over stupid people’s stupid opinions.

We had a non-traditional wedding and some of our relatives were openly sneery about it (inc my own DM). I was a bit taken aback - more at the sheer rudeness and ill-will than anything else - but I was so happy and excited about it, I didn’t let it bother me.

YANBU, OP, but actually a wedding us a legally binding contract. Strictly, it has nothing to do with love. As long as a wedding is legal, nothing else is required.

Maybe you should tell your "friends" that it's incredibly chic and elegant to have a small and/or quirky ceremony than the cheesy, traditional ones!
