To be in 2 minds whether to go to GP for lumps

Since the weekend I've noticed a very small lump in my left armpit then yesterday Ive noticed there's a lump in the areola. I've had smaller ones before in the areola in the past but this is larger. I did think it was a spot at first and squeezed in the shower 🙈 and white came out. My nipple also started to leak slightly yellow liquid.
Around a year ago I went to the GP with a small lump under my breast. I was referred to the breast clinic and luckily it wasn't anything serious but the doctor who checked me there made me feel awful. I had lost my mum a year prior due to ovarian and endometrial cancer so I thought I was being more proactive about it really but came out of the clinic feeling like I was ridiculous for even going.
Last time I went to gp I had to come back after 2 weeks if it didn't resolve so any thoughts whether I should do the same and wait it out 🤔
Thanks guys

Please go get checked out, better to be safe than sorry.

Princessfluffy · 21/10/2026 18:47

Get it checked asap, GPs don’t mind and it’s quick to do.

dancingwhilstfacingthemusic · 21/10/2026 18:47

The best person to make that decision is your GP - so go and get yourself checked out. If it’s not a problem then that’s great but don’t waste time waiting.

DidoAndAeneasWereInLove · 21/10/2026 18:49

Please go the GP. This is not a waste of their, or your, time.

Jk987 · 21/10/2026 18:50

Just go. Request a different GP. No benefit from waiting just prolonged worry.

MarcusBrigstockesfringe · 21/10/2026 18:51

Hi op. We self refer to breast clinic in my area. See if that is something you can do. I'd absolutely get nipple discharge looked at.

Iamnotalemming · 21/10/2026 19:05

Go and check. Why risk it.

MrsK89 · 21/10/2026 19:07

Thanks everyone I'm not planning on just ignoring it just don't know whether it was a waste of time when I may have to wait another 2 weeks 🙈 thanks all for your help

I've been to the GP twice for the same issue over the last 10 years and both times I was referred to the breast clinic right away. They will absolutely not say you should wait two weeks. Pretty sure that would be against NICE guidelines. Last time when I went I said myself that I am fairly confident it is fibroadenoma and she agreed but referred me anyway. Both breast clinics were amazing and nobody ever made me feel like I was wasting their time. Don't let one unfortunate experience make you reluctant to get help.

Thank you! I will make an appointment tomorrow. To be fair the GP was nice but said the breast clinic won't entertain it unless it's been at least 2 weeks. Maybe he was following old information? I have no idea. The doctor in the breast clinic had awful social skills though😔

They’re meant to try and see anyone on a potential cancer pathway WITHIN two weeks… not pack them off elsewhere.

You can read the Nice Guidelones here which clearly state to refer women over 30 with a lump immediately: https://cks.nice.org.uk/topics/breast-cancer-recognition-referral/management/referral-for-breast-cancer/

Just another person here to say definitely, definitely get checked. Good luck!

Pinkflamingo10 · 21/10/2026 20:33

Hello! I’m a GP, I would phone your GP in the am and say you need a breast lump and nipple discharge looked at by a GP urgently. Don’t worry about wasting anyone’s time this is exactly what urgent appointments are for !
sorry you had a bad experience in breast clinic - hopefully there’ll be a different Dr there this time ? I was at my own breast clinic as a patient this year and they were all lovely. Good luck !

Circe7 · 21/10/2026 20:38

I would definitely get nipple discharge looked at. It was my first symptom of breast cancer. That’s not to scare you- it can be other things and in fact the breast clinic initially thought it was unlikely to be cancer for me. But certainly not wasting anyone’s time.

You really shouldn't have to wait.

I've done NHS breast clinic twice and private consultant and no one ever made me feel like I was wasting their time. Even though it was just cysts each time.

Hankunamatata · 21/10/2026 21:08

Get to GP and get checked put ASAP. GP know if it looks hinky and say on the referral.

Action cancer often have breast scans avaliable to book

Copperoliverbear · 21/10/2026 22:52

100% get checked.

JustNodSmileAgree · 22/10/2026 00:44

@MrsK89 no don’t wait. Sorry to say OP but what you describe sounds serious.

SnowFrogJelly · 22/10/2026 00:48

You should get this checked OP

MrsK89 · 22/10/2026 20:19
