Any experiences of contacting MP?

I am having a massive issue with a neighbour who is engaging in extreme antisocial behaviour pretty much with the entire street. He has a brother in the local council and seems to think he’s untouchable.

The residents are now thinking of contacting the MP together to report his antisocial behaviour and illegal activities.

has anyone ever contacted their MP and gotten a good solution out of it?

Depends on the MP. We have a good one now having previously had a useless one.
But it is an MP's issue? Have you tried other avenues? Police? The appropriate council department?

Generally it's best to have used the recommended channels first. So contacting your local authority etc. Be aware that accusing someone of being involved in what effectively amounts to corruption can be a very serous business, so you are best advised to ensure you take the correct pathway.

I used to work for an MP as a caseworker. So I would be the person who picked up your email.

If this arrived in my inbox- I would contact either:

  1. The council or housing association if your neighbour is a social tenant or,
  2. The noise department of the council if he is a private tenant or owner.

I would also contact the local police and ask what they are doing about it.

I agree with PP that it's good to try the regular channels first. (The same places I would contact!). But it's not essential.
Lots of people don't understand the regular channels or don't feel confident to use them. A good caseworker will contact the regular channels on your behalf.

As to how effective I would be- It really depends on the reason why nothing is happening.

If there's already a process going on and it just needs to run its course (For example if the council are already seeking a CBO or CPN) an MP's involvement will not necessarily speed things up.

If everyone has been sitting on their hands, an email from an MP might provide the kick up the arse that's needed.

Good luck OP

Just to add the residents have previously approached the council, police, business contacts, even the bloody dvla 😅

Totally depends on the mp.

I've had good results from some mps, or you get the likes of Andrew Bowie who is a useless prick who can't be arsed to pick up the phone even when vunerable families desperate for help try to contact him.

If that has all been documented, then it's all good stuff to forward to your MP.

There is literally cctv footage of the resident engaging in illegal activities, he also runs an illegal business on the street

It’s nothing to do with noise complaints but more antisocial behaviour and corruption within the council

Also I’m pretty sure there is benefit and business fraud going on (based on the persons own boasting and his family’s comments) so DWP and HMRC are aware but nothings happened still

It depends on the MP.
I have emailed in the past and always had a response.
Not sure now.

I haven't contacted my own MP but while working for various public sector organisations I have certainly been involved with lots of things that came about because we were contacted by MPs (or MPs' offices/caseworkers).

Coincidentally, the MP who was the best at getting stuff sorted out for his constituents when I worked for a public sector organisation in the north west region was Andy Burnham, back when he was still the MP for Leigh.

Greengreengrassofhere · 21/10/2026 15:23

Depends on your MP. Mine is excellent. I’m not sure one of those Green MPs who like to rant about trans and Gaza all the time would be much use, nor the Reform MPs obsessed with immigrants. You want a boring backbencher who’s just really good at representing their constituents.

I think you will get more joy from the ward councillor, who could then raise the issue with relevant council managers.
