Just seen elsewhere.
How is this sustainable?

How can we be more like Finland?

Population of Finland is 5 million people.

AgeingMillennial · 21/10/2026 11:54

YANBU. We are one of the most nature depleted countries in the world. If all these immigrants have not fixed the NHS and economy by now, they’re clearly not the answer to that either. Makes me want to cry tbh

More next door to Russia?

That's sure to put the kybosh on the UK being an attractive destination.

Ablondiebutagoody · 21/10/2026 12:08

Poland would be a decent country to aim for. Isn't their GDP (per capita?) predicted to overtake the UK in the next 5 years too? UK is in steep decline.

BiddyPopthe2nd · 21/10/2026 12:10

Population of the UK at the time was 69m, and for Ireland it was 5m. so UK is almost 14 times larger.

But there was 10.2% immigration to the UK compared to 24.7% to Ireland, compared to population. Spain also had just under 14% immigration.

So it’s not just about the individual numbers….

TrappedByThisDesk · 21/10/2026 12:29

Basic data analysis fail.
These figures need to be percentages to get a true idea of the effect of population increases on the various countries.

randomchap · 21/10/2026 12:54

What's the source of those figures? Not that I don't trust World of Statistics on Facebook, but the platform has been known to push misinformation

Be colder, darker and emptier. Have you been to Finland? It's all trees, snow naked sauna and moonshine. No one wants to emigrate to Finland!!

I am joking a little. Finland is wonderful but it has a low population density and the associated services / metropolitan centres and the winter is very long and very cold.

I feel like Scotland is the Finland of thr U.K. 2/3 the size of England, 10% of the population. Cold, wet and dark for much of the year. Gorgeous to look at.
