School didn't handle this well

There was an incident in school on Friday where my son, age 8, heard 2boys in his class say they were waiting in the corridor so they could beat up 'j'.
My son immediately went and told his teaching assistant.
His teacher then spoke to the whole class about it.
She questioned my son, and others, on exactly what happened. But she did this in front of the whole class with 2 'perpetrators' watching the whole thing.
She told my son pretend u are J tell me exactly his words.
J sat there saying I didn't say that.

Vice principal came in and told the whole class he was disappointed in them. He told the class that whoever did this needed to own up, and if they owned up then he wouldn't be phoning parents!

Fast forward to yesterday. My son was sent on a pretend message where the vice principal was waiting to speak to him. He was questioned for the 3rd time about what happened. But at least this time in private.

Vice phoned me to let me know he had spoken to my son.

Then I hear from Js mum. She praised my son for telling the truth and looking out for his friend. But it was her who told me this whole thing had happened in front of the whole class.
The teacher has lied and said it didn't, even though numerous children have said it did.

I'm fuming but aibu
I think it was so wrong to make my son stand in front of everyone and be the one to call out the bullies. This now leaves him open to being a target. It's against all child safeguarding.
Also not once did school praise my child instead he was questioned 3 separate times by 3 different people.

I have asked for a phone call to discuss but I feel now I should actually email in a complaint in writing

Any advice

There’s no point deciding on a written complaint before you’ve spoken to them. Has your son told you it happened in front of the whole class?

Shinyandnew1 · 21/10/2026 09:22

I can’t see where the teacher has said it didn’t happen in from of the class?

I would be writing letters, I’d go in and speak to someone.

Sofedup15 · 21/10/2026 09:54

My son and 4
others have said it happened in front of whole class.
Just spoken to vice principal now who said it happened on front of whole class because teacher had no cover.
Teacher denied it happened on front of whole class to Js parent yesterday.

Vice principal said he will do some more investigation this morning and come back to me.
I'm happy with that but have asked that my child is not approached and questioned again

Thanks for ur help

Presumably these boys didn’t speak loudly enough for others to hear them, apart from your DS and others nearby. Hence the need for him to go and tell his TA. You cannot rely on Js mum as she wasn’t in the classroom! I don’t get why the teacher asked your DS to pretend he was J and repeat what he said, as it wasn’t J that was speaking. I’m confused.

BoomerWatkins · 21/10/2026 15:04

I’m confused. How could he pretend to be J if J was not there?

Ponderingwindow · 21/10/2026 15:09

Since it is an issue of safety, If the teacher can’t deal
with it appropriately in the moment, she sends the potential perpetrators to the office. Isn’t that part of the vice principal’s job?

Ablondiebutagoody · 21/10/2026 15:19

That's why school kids are obsessed with not snitching. No good can come of it.

Also, who was pretending to be J and why?

DoubleBusy2026 · 21/10/2026 15:33

I’ve read this 3 times and I’m still confused who was who and who was getting bested up by whom?!

Sofedup15 · 21/10/2026 20:21

OK I've re read my post and ur right it makes no sense. I obviously posted in haste without reading first.
My son asked 2boys A and C what they were doing blocking as they were blocking a corridor. C said I'm waiting to beat up J

My son immediately told teaching assistant.
After lunch teacher was informed. Just to be clear kids were all allowed out into playground to play before any of this was addressed

Once teacher was informed she questioned the children involved in front of the whole class. The boys a and C would not admit anything. The teacher told my son to stand up and act like C and say exactly what C said. This was on front of whole class including C who kept shouting over my son.

The vice principal was then called and spoke to whole class explaining he was so disappointed and if the people owned up he would not contact parents but if no one owned up he would contact parents.

My point is my son did the right thing. He told what he heard yet was then subjected to a whole class questioning. He should have been protected as now A and C know exactly who 'snitched' on them.

The teacher is denying any of this happened she said she took each cold aside and quietly spoke to them.
Other children in class have given exact same account as my child

Whilst I don't think he should have to have repeated his accusation in front of the class, A and C would always have known who'd told on them. Hopefully the school will deal with them in such a way that they don't dare attempt any repercussions.

Thehop · 21/10/2026 20:36

I'm so shocked that the school could have handled this so badly

and why is the teacher lying to parents?

headteacher bargaining with children and offering to keep secrets?

outrageous on many levels

Sofedup15 · 21/10/2026 21:33

I'm glad to see others feel the same as myself as I was doubting myself but I do think its just outrageous
