Did something a bit silly at work

I regularly visit schools for my job. One school had to change premises to a larger school site whilst building works were being undertaken on the original school building.

The support staff of the new building were unpleasant and unfriendly- possibly because they didn’t want to share their building with another school.

Each week for the past nine months or so I’ve experienced unpleasantness with one particular member of staff on the front desk. Things like deliberately keeping me waiting to let me in and out of the building (she would pretend she wasn’t in the office, but I could see her in the reflection of one of the windows, she thought she was out of sight), abrupt manner, unhelpful, not passing on messages, rolling eyes because she has to get out of her chair to press a button to release the door, huffing because my mere presence is an inconvenience etc, you get the picture.

A couple of weeks ago we had a slight altercation, she was scowling as usual as I arrived and I asked her if everything was ok as she seemed quite unhappy to see me. She immediately became defensive and gave me a right mouthful so I calmly told her she maybe should develop some social skills given she was on the front desk 😳

I spoke to the head teacher of ‘my school’ who said she’d deal with it. Miraculously, over the next couple of weeks the doors were unlocked and she was not in the office as I walked passed. Result

Today was my last day as the school are moving back to their original premises after half term and I did something a little immature. In the foyer at the entrance is a photograph of all the school staff and their names, there was no-one around. Without thinking I got out my sharpie and drew a moustache and angry eyebrows on the picture of this person. Under her name I wrote ‘Miss Funsucker’. I did chuckle about it for the rest of the day but now I feel a bit bad and anxious I will get into trouble- it wouldn’t take Sherlock Holmes to work out it was me 😬

should I do nothing or should I do something - if so what? I know it’s a long shot but has anyone else done this?

The vitriol in these responses 🥱

i think it’s hilarious 😆

Exactly, and some people have the audacity to call me unhinged. Oh the irony.
i just wanted to see if anyone else had done this and to maybe share their experience

we all know you don't.

Not your finest hour, but very funny.

How big is the picture of her? Would it be really obvious to anybody walking past?

Fingers crossed nothing comes of it. But best to lie low and not say anything.

All the pictures are about 6 inches by 6 inches so quite noticeable

Yes, we've all done daft things. Not this, but daft. I like your style.
I wouldn't confess. I'd keep my head down and hope it goes away.

tartyflette · 19/10/2026 21:18

Christ, the number of tight-arsed professional suck-ups on here.
Lighten up, nobody died.
Yes, she might have defaced (slightly) a bit of school property (gasp) but I’d bet many of us wanted to do something similar at work or at school. And that at least some of us carried it through.

Yeah I think lying low is good advice. I’ll do that for the foreseeable 👍

Stupidest shit I've read this week. Probably this year. Plain unadulterated stupid shit. Never mind. I'm sure you're very happy with yourself. Onwards and upwards to the next person who annoys you and you can post dog shit through their letterbox or something similarly hilarious.

No you didn’t.

You shared it because you thought it was funny, and now you’re embarrassed that the reaction is not what you hoped it would be. I’m cringing myself inside-out to be honest.

You did it, apparently took a picture so there's evidence in your phone and you've made a thread on the internet about it.

Yet you want to lie low... Hmm

Shinyandnew1 · 19/10/2026 20:55

Please tell me this is a joke?!

You are presumably visiting schools in a professional capacity?!

Defacing school property is pathetic-I would imagine that HT won’t want you anywhere near their school in future.

Yeah suits me. I wouldn’t go there again if I was getting double my hourly rate

momtoboys · 19/10/2026 21:21

I think it is hilarious! If anyone ever approaches you about it, deny, deny, deny. If there really aren't cameras, there is no way they can prove it.

Okl · 19/10/2026 21:21

Someone I couldn't stand left their ID badge lying around. I drew a penis on their head. It gave me a great sense of satisfaction. I am lolling at these responses OP, but this is mumsnet so it's to be expected. I very much doubt anything will come of this. If it does, you deny, deny, deny. The onus will be on them to prove you did it and they can't. So no worries.

Lookatheskies · 19/10/2026 21:21

Are you 8? This is pathetic.

MushMonster · 19/10/2026 21:22

LOL This is the people who educates our children! You could both be 5.
And I do understand you, I get it, I have been on your boat. But whatever possessed you to act like a 5 year old?
Anyway, as we all learnt at 5, you keep it shut, nada, not a word, act as nothing happened. It could be a while till they find out. How often do you look at those pics?
Only own it if they ask you, which will not happen.

Yes, going forward I will lie low. It’ll only be less than 24 hours after the incident I’ll be lying low - as from tomorrow

I can't be the only person wondering what on earth the OP's role is: visiting schools in a professional capacity but a freelancer; more work than she can cope with; knows that schools and heads talk to each other but isn't worried about them talking to each other about her stupid, unprofessional behaviour.

Okl · 19/10/2026 21:23

Actually it's sound advice to get this thread deleted. Gave me chuckle anyway so thank you.

NoteyMcNoteface · 19/10/2026 20:56

Must be one of the only schools in the country that doesn’t, how convenient for you.

The school where I work doesn't have any security camera anywhere. We've only recently got an electronic sign in system. Definitely no security cameras.

OP, I think it was probably not the right thing to do, but I can definitely understand why you did it.

lol 😂 see I knew I couldn’t be the only one to retaliate like this. Yes I’ll definitely deny and will of course delete the picture- I’ll send it to my husband so I can still look at it when I’m feeling a bit down.

Lots of sanctimonious responses here. I once poured milk into someone’s filing cabinet over the summer holidays. Lots of us have done similar things.

Wiserandolder · 19/10/2026 21:25

I work in a school, I’m sure they’ll think a student did it. This lady has a great sense of humour!

I’m not worried no. I’m quite well respected in these circles and the many heads I know would probably find this quite amusing (off record of course)

Growlybear83 · 19/10/2026 21:26

I think people are going a bit over the top with this and taking it way too seriously. I think what the OP did was quite funny and I don’t think most headteachers would be desperately seeking the culprit. The OP has already said thst she won’t be going back to the school concerned and is a freelancer with plenty of work, so I very much doubt this is gojng to have any impact on her.
