Did something a bit silly at work

I regularly visit schools for my job. One school had to change premises to a larger school site whilst building works were being undertaken on the original school building.

The support staff of the new building were unpleasant and unfriendly- possibly because they didn’t want to share their building with another school.

Each week for the past nine months or so I’ve experienced unpleasantness with one particular member of staff on the front desk. Things like deliberately keeping me waiting to let me in and out of the building (she would pretend she wasn’t in the office, but I could see her in the reflection of one of the windows, she thought she was out of sight), abrupt manner, unhelpful, not passing on messages, rolling eyes because she has to get out of her chair to press a button to release the door, huffing because my mere presence is an inconvenience etc, you get the picture.

A couple of weeks ago we had a slight altercation, she was scowling as usual as I arrived and I asked her if everything was ok as she seemed quite unhappy to see me. She immediately became defensive and gave me a right mouthful so I calmly told her she maybe should develop some social skills given she was on the front desk 😳

I spoke to the head teacher of ‘my school’ who said she’d deal with it. Miraculously, over the next couple of weeks the doors were unlocked and she was not in the office as I walked passed. Result

Today was my last day as the school are moving back to their original premises after half term and I did something a little immature. In the foyer at the entrance is a photograph of all the school staff and their names, there was no-one around. Without thinking I got out my sharpie and drew a moustache and angry eyebrows on the picture of this person. Under her name I wrote ‘Miss Funsucker’. I did chuckle about it for the rest of the day but now I feel a bit bad and anxious I will get into trouble- it wouldn’t take Sherlock Holmes to work out it was me 😬

should I do nothing or should I do something - if so what? I know it’s a long shot but has anyone else done this?

It’s funny for me and you’re right, you never know what’s going on in someone’s life yet she persistently treated me badly, and made me late every week

I get why you were tempted but to follow through was silly. I would have spoken to her line manager. I just can’t imagine actually going through with this. At the max, it’s criminal damage although I doubt the ‘school’ will want the hassle of pushing this and in the grand scheme of things, it’s very minor. I’m invested: let us know if you are contacted about it!

I’ve never needed a reference for any of the schools I’ve worked for over the last 25 years. I’m approached regularly by schools who know that I’m very good at my job and want me to work for them, despite me being past retirement age now. It sounds like the OP is in a very similar position. I doubt very much that word would spread across the local authority if I’d drawn a moustache and eyebrows on a photo of a member of staff who is clearly know for being difficult - headteachers have far more serious things to worry about, and most still manage to keep a sense of humour. With regard to security cameras, most of the schools I work for have some cameras, but secondary schools tend to have far more than primaries, and i can think of several primary schools I know where there would be be parts of the reception area that wouldn’t be covered by cameras.

Ok

FleurDeFleur · 20/10/2026 09:00

Oh well. I think some people were last in schools in about 1986.
Good luck OP.

Imdunfer · 20/10/2026 09:10

When you train animals, the number one rule is you reward good behaviour, you don't punish them for something after they've started behaving well.

You made yourself a worse person than her.

Jesus, there's some miserable wankers on this thread. Stop posting nasty comments to the OP. OP, good for you for standing up for yourself. It was harmless antics. End off

She came here breathlessly wanting validation for her hilarious story. Do you think everybody should have said how funny they found it? Or shared their honest feelings about it? The OP was under no obligation to share details of her prank; she presumably expected a range of responses from MN other than applause?

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 20/10/2026 09:19

Well I thought it was funny, OP. Maybe she'll lighten up a bit.

Don’t be so dramatic. I’m not breathless and don’t require validation from mumsnet. I’m not here to hear how hilarious my post is. It’s quite clear in my op why I posted.
you have no idea what my expectations are, stop presuming and judging

Great analogy but I’m confident I’m a better person despite recent events

Well I can't swear to it if course but from what you've written you enjoy your job more than she enjoys hers and that could be for any number of reasons in her life that you don't know about.

I'm not sure you've proved you're a better person.

When you did it, did you think that any child in the school could see it and that it will go round the school like wildfire and that will be her name among the pupils now?

MargoLivebetter · 20/10/2026 09:32

I see that @Saracopp you have never posted before.

This sounds like another one of those improbable stories that is probably AI generated bollocks, supposed to be vaguely humourous in a 1970s kind of way that gets posted from time to time. I don't believe any of this ever happened.

I don’t need to prove anything, what I know is more important

Of course. It’s half term. The children are out.

Yes it certainly was deserved. I was there you weren’t. She crossed the line and maybe I did eventually

Some people need putting back in their box.

It may teach her to be kinder to others, because the message was clear - she’s disliked.

I think the word you're looking for is unkind. OP was unkind and unprofessional.

Piety has nothing to do with it

It’s not half term for most of the schools I work for.

Topseyt123 · 20/10/2026 09:51

I remember the absolute dragon on reception at my DDs' primary school when they were young.

Never a dragon to the headteacher, but to parents, children and other staff members she was awful. She wanted everyone to think she owned the place.

I know many of us wouldn't have been sorry if someone had done something like that to her. She had put far too many people's noses out of joint on a regular basis. There would have been none of the faux outrage seen here.

Of course, probably nobody should do this, but by god it would be satisfying!!! 🤣

Not necessarily. That's next week round here.

I have worked in professional environments all my life and if anyone did that, it would result in a sacking. Although I find it hard to believe that a ‘professional’ would act like a 6 year old then come onto the internet to boast about how clever she was.

I hope the woman makes a complaint and that your manager takes it seriously.
