Did something a bit silly at work

I regularly visit schools for my job. One school had to change premises to a larger school site whilst building works were being undertaken on the original school building.

The support staff of the new building were unpleasant and unfriendly- possibly because they didn’t want to share their building with another school.

Each week for the past nine months or so I’ve experienced unpleasantness with one particular member of staff on the front desk. Things like deliberately keeping me waiting to let me in and out of the building (she would pretend she wasn’t in the office, but I could see her in the reflection of one of the windows, she thought she was out of sight), abrupt manner, unhelpful, not passing on messages, rolling eyes because she has to get out of her chair to press a button to release the door, huffing because my mere presence is an inconvenience etc, you get the picture.

A couple of weeks ago we had a slight altercation, she was scowling as usual as I arrived and I asked her if everything was ok as she seemed quite unhappy to see me. She immediately became defensive and gave me a right mouthful so I calmly told her she maybe should develop some social skills given she was on the front desk 😳

I spoke to the head teacher of ‘my school’ who said she’d deal with it. Miraculously, over the next couple of weeks the doors were unlocked and she was not in the office as I walked passed. Result

Today was my last day as the school are moving back to their original premises after half term and I did something a little immature. In the foyer at the entrance is a photograph of all the school staff and their names, there was no-one around. Without thinking I got out my sharpie and drew a moustache and angry eyebrows on the picture of this person. Under her name I wrote ‘Miss Funsucker’. I did chuckle about it for the rest of the day but now I feel a bit bad and anxious I will get into trouble- it wouldn’t take Sherlock Holmes to work out it was me 😬

should I do nothing or should I do something - if so what? I know it’s a long shot but has anyone else done this?

It’s not that deep, we can all be spontaneous at times and react in a manner which we wouldn’t normally react.

Yes perhaps, but a mature professional will reflect and regret and learn, if they behave in an unusual way, led by their emotions. You are just doubling down on how hilarious you were, and how she deserved it.

I’d be wondering if I was getting signs of dementia if I lost my boundaries enough to do something this pathetic.

🤣🤣🤣. Tou could only get this type of response on Mumsnet - an absolute classic!

I actually didn’t consider this. You’re right and that’s awful.

OP, you have no way of knowing who will be blamed for this-I would be horrified if any of the children were going to be blamed for this.

Don't worry, they won't. Because graffiti has been such a problem in schools, the CCTV is always checked. No student will get the blame. It's a school reception area, there are no blind spots, she'll be identified.

Yes, you're absolutely right.

I don’t think it’s hilarious, more mildly amusing. I have had time to reflect and have no regrets and yes I’m afraid she did deserve it. It’s transpired it wasn’t just me she made miserable

I know how much somebody working on reception in a school earns. It's fuck all for a bloody hard job, made worse by absolute wankers treating them like shit because they think they are superior.

Whatever someone is "going through" its no excuse for behaving as this person did. All she had to do was press a buzzer to let OP through to do her job.
But for reasons unknown she deliberately didnt do that, on several occasions , and made it crystal clear that she was doing it deliberately.
Strange isnt it, that these days, everyone has to be "going through" something to excuse bad behaviour.
Nobody is just an out-and-out knobhead any more

A person who isn't trusted with a key fob, and needs no references? Strange story.

There are plenty of roles like that within schools, particularly amongst specialist and therapy staff.

Who then graffiti staff images and never need a reference?. Not that I've ever come across.

TheBlueKoala · 20/10/2026 08:22

@Saracopp I would have thought this to be really funny...when I was 15.
Being 47 I know that there are reasons that some people behave like dicks- I wouldn't stand for it so I would def "confront" eg asking if she was alright/if she was ill/if I haf asked her something that wasn't part of her duties. And then told her manager IF her behaviour didn't change after that.

What I wouldn't have done is what you did. And I think if you had pulled her up on her behaviour straight away you wouldn't have held a grudge. Now, you dont know anything about this woman. Her behaviour was shit, not saying it wasn't, but perhaps she was undergoing chemo, her child just died and her husband divorced her. Not excuses ofcourse and she should be pulled up on her behaviour. But it's the vindictive childish behaviour of your action that I take offense with. You have no idea if she already got a Stern talking to, her mh is shit and seeing that drawing is the last drop. People are vulnerable, some people hide it well. You just don't know. Why you shouldn't ever do something like that. Ever.

What a load of utter nonsense is involved in education. Fobs, building works, silly moody petty people. It's a wonder anybody can learn anything.

Security and improvements to buildings are "utter nonsense"?

Of course there is.

I would be surprised if there is. It's not common for schools to have security cameras.
