So my daughter-in-law and I both enjoy hating a certain beauty influencer.
Nothing weird or anything - don't post anything about her, no tattle - but whenever we see a feature on her, we send it to each other and growl by text.
I thought everyone had one of these?

No - I’ve never done this. Tbh you are just cultivating unhealthy negative emotions. It’s not good for either of you.

gravitarse · 19/10/2026 09:00

lol. Thanks doctor.

Hate is bad for the soul. I may have a moan with a friend about various things, but a mutual hate figure, no.

Waitingfordoggo · 19/10/2026 09:06

DH and I do this about Trump sometimes but I expect quite a lot of people do. You know, when he says or does something mad, we’ll often message each other ‘Have you seen this?’ And then have a short conversation about what a dick he is and then get on with our day.

Can’t think of anyone else though. I don’t follow influencers or content creators and am not interested in the cult of celebrity.

gravitarse · 19/10/2026 09:07

Okay then, not hate "moan"

honestly people take stuff so literally

Er, have you seen the royal threads about a certain couple just recently moved back to Britain? What you are describing is pretty common op.

I guess if you deliberately put your life out there for public scrutiny then not everyone is going to like you.

If you are born in to a situation where you are famous, then it’s more problematic.

Personally, I tend to avoid looking at sm content that I don’t enjoy. If it pops up on my feed then I unfollow. If it still pops up because of algorithms, then I might inwardly roll my eyes but I don’t feel the need to comment to anyone else about it.

Cloudysky81 · 19/10/2026 09:22

I think it’s is fairly common, a friend and I have someone we used to work with, who we both found very irritating.

It used to be Dominic Cummings, but then he became too weird.

gravitarse · 19/10/2026 09:23

lol at DC

Yes, I've made a personal policy. Never have an opinion about the royal family loudly because I that the whole concept is ridiculous. So there I've had an opinion

Obviously Trump . And we have loads of material.

Needacalminginfluence · 19/10/2026 09:32

So many threads on MN recently about Share your best insults, Share the petty ways you wreaked revenge on someone etc Not to mention the threads@Bristleorwhistle175 referred to about Harry and Meghan.
Life is really difficult for a lot of people atm and all this spreading of hatefulness and spitefulness is truly depressing.
Of course it's not normal to like everybody and some people really have the capacity to wind others up but all this glorying in dislike of others is extremely depressing and contributes to the feeling of how miserable and unpleasant people, and life, has become.

CheerfulYank · 19/10/2026 09:44

Yes and frankly I LOVE it. This is a person I know in real life, and she is awful in general and was awful in particular to the friend of a good friend of mine (friend’s friend is awful woman’s sister in law).

Whenever the awful woman gets up to some new nonsense (and it’s a fairly regular occurrence) my good friend and I hash out the details as well as do a good going over of her past nonsense. As the man said, it’s not beating a dead horse if the horse keeps getting up and doing more bullshit 🤣

Anyway, I’m far too old to think about how immature this makes me. I love it and feel no shame in it.

Recently, horrible woman apparently walked in on her (also horrible) father cheating on her (only slightly less horrible) mother with a (perhaps even more horrible) friend of hers at their kitchen table. She made public post after post about this on Facebook. It was like Christmas.

Owen Jones. He's an excellent weather vane. Whatever he says, I take the opposite position.

TheLastSilverSaint · 19/10/2026 11:09

I'd probably describe it more as ridicule than hate, because it's more about finding them absurd and cringey rather than actively disliking them, but there are a couple of B- and C-list celebs that two of my friends and I gleefully mock at every opportunity. We're weirdly fascinated by them, to be honest. One of them is almost weirdly talismanic for us. They can all be guaranteed to reduce us to hysterics whenever we discuss them.

gravitarse · 19/10/2026 11:13

Kitchen table??

piscofrisco · 19/10/2026 11:20

My DD and I both find the influencer Perrie Sian to be very annoying (though that said, I did once buy something on he direct recommendation so I’m a huge hypocrite)

Bristleorwhistle175 · 19/10/2026 11:31

I guess if I am totally honest a lot of people on social media disappoint because of their vanity or smugness, or because they are using it primarily as a vehicle to show off, or because they pretend they are there to “help others” when we all know their main reasons are financial.

Ditto when a lot of very privileged people post bewailing their lot and pretending they are busy or stressed to make themselves look less coddled than they actually are.

But I don’t understand the logic of looking at someone’s content to be negative about it, because by clicking on it you are enabling them to carry on.

YES.

sweetpotatopie2 · 21/10/2026 08:03

Oh yes! I am usually secretly in hate with one celebrity or other. I have no idea why, though of course it is always someone who is very annoying. I make DH hate them with me. 😂

This 💯 LOJ is the grift that keeps on grifting.

Anywherebuthere · 21/10/2026 08:07

No. Because if I dislike someone I'm not giving them extra airtime in my head or anyone else's. They might be briefly mentioned if it anything crops up relating to the person but that's as far as it goes.

Yes, I can’t really comment on other peoples circles because I’m not in them.
