Voice notes love or hate?

My best friend hates voice notes as a way of keeping in touch. She just told me yesterday. But she leaves me voicemail messages which I hate because I’m not always certain who a message is from and it’s more fiddly to hear.
Maybe there is something rude about them, particularly if they are long.
But it seems hypocritical to me to dislike one but use the other.
Does anyone have an opinion on this etiquette?
I feel it is about staying in touch with someone who is always busy when you’re not and vice versa.

Honestly not sure which way you want me to vote - is it YABU for love them or hate them?
personally, I dislike them and prefer text- based communication, with a visceral hatred for messages that just say “call me back” without any context or indication of urgency eg “call me back because the house in on fire” or “call me back for a general chit-chat & catch up”

Tortephant · 19/10/2026 07:46

Not sure on the voting either but I also hate voice notes. Call me or message me.

A call is for a conversation and a catch up.

A message is a quick update or something that doesn't necessarily need a reply or to take up your time by speaking. It's time saving, or should be for most people.

Also voice notes are temporary and disappear, if you are communicating something important and the person needs to re listen to it, or check back on something, they can't so have to get back in contact when if it was a message or a voice mail there would be no need.

I hate voice notes and voicemail messages. I prefer a text or WhatsApp and if an urgent conversation is required then indicate this in the message. (I haven't got time to listen to my sister's meandering voice messages about nothing.)

Tickingcrocodile · 19/10/2026 07:54

Hate them. Have some weird thing where I literally can't listen to them. It's like it's a demand on me that reading a message just isn't. I especially hate it when people leave work related ones. It is co.pletely irrational, but I also hate using the phone.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 19/10/2026 07:56

Hate.

Sheer laziness & indulgence on the sender's part. Big imposition on my time.

NewGrandmummy · 19/10/2026 07:57

We did this to death a couple of months ago. Is this another 'seeking engagement' post from MN? I wonder as the last one on this subject went on for pages and pages....

MistyWater · 19/10/2026 07:58

I hate voice notes so much!
A little bit of rage bubbles up inside me everytime I get one and I generally don’t listen to them.

They are usually 2-3 minutes of waffle that if they had sent a text instead would have taken 20 seconds to read.

Plus I have a lot of meetings during the day, I can take a sneak at a WhatsApp message and reply but not to a voice note.

feathermucker · 19/10/2026 07:59

HATE voice notes with a passion and had to stop communicating with an online dating match up as he wouldn’t communicate any other way

Goofish · 19/10/2026 08:00

I hate them, but I wonder if your friend is trying to compromise with you somehow? If she hates voice notes and you hate answerphone messages, can't you just agree between you to avoid both?

Mcdon · 19/10/2026 08:01

I hate voice notes! HATE THEM!

I have a friend who sends them a majority of the time that last 3/4 minutes each time.

We could be messaging as in written messages when suddenly he will just swap to these long voice notes. Many times I say I can’t listen to them as I’m at work but he still persists.
It halts the whole conversation until I am able to listen to them. A few times now I have just left it a few days until I reply in hope they will get the message but nope thy continue, we definitely message less now because of them.

haha this!

Voice notes make me rage. First off, you can't just glance at it and know immediately what its about, secondly, you then have to go somewhere private to listen to it if you are at work which is incredibly inconvenient and if its urgent then its too bloody late. Thirdly, the waffling goes on for ages "oh hi, it's me, so I just wanted to let you know that er, ....." blah blah

For the love of God, just put it in a WhatsApp message, then I can reply at my leisure

MondeoFan · 19/10/2026 08:03

I really like voice notes. It’s quick and easy. Sometimes it’s lovely to hear a familiar voice. I think people generally make less phone calls now, it’s more text and WhatsApp so for some people the voice note is a welcoming voice.
id only do them for people I know really well, not to let someone know I was running late for a job etc
they are ideal for explaining something when the text would be mega long.

user7789 · 19/10/2026 08:05

It’s quick and easy.

Its not quick and easy for the recipient

Flamingojune · 19/10/2026 08:07

Hate them especially in public unless you dont give a shit about other people

NinaGeiger · 19/10/2026 08:09

Can't stand voice notes and don't like answerphone messages either.
I'm often in a situation where I can't listen to a voice notes eg at work and people don't censor themselves and cut the wheat from the chaff like they do in a text message

ASundayWellSpent · 19/10/2026 08:10

I love them! My best friend and I work completely opposite schedules and our lives are basically the opposite of eachother. We have spent years sending voicenotes to each other, each of us on our way to or from work. Its like a podcast length at this point and I love how closely involved we can be in eachothers lives in this way when we live very far apart. We would find it very hard to find convenient times to call eachother for a catch up. I love listening to them while I walk the dog.

DonewhatIcando · 19/10/2026 08:15

Dd and I voicenote each other, usually when it's a long bit of info or something funny.

I often listen to them back as they make me laugh, we're usually laughing about something silly.

Anyone else, I wouldnt appreciate a voicenote

SillyG · 19/10/2026 08:16

How do you not know who a voice note is from?
How are they fiddly to hear?

Personally, I hate them and literally won't bother listening to some friends voice notes and they know it!

AltitudeCheck · 19/10/2026 08:21

I don't mind and even appreciate, a brief message after a missed call, to say what it was about and how urgent it is to call back.

I hate a long voice note that is basically their half of a conversation without the normal back and forth so it just becomes an information dump. If it's not urgent or essential info, then save it for when we can catch up properly!

MeridaBrave · 19/10/2026 08:22

I hate but now you can transcribe on WhatsApp.

AhBiscuits · 19/10/2026 08:25

I cannot stand voicenotes. Speak on the phone or send a message.

Wheniswinenight · 19/10/2026 08:26

I hate them! There’s one on my phone just now and I’m not even going to bother. I know what it’s about it and I don’t care. Self indulgent/I love the sound of my own voice shite. There’s a certain type of person who leaves them. Annoying fuckers.

ThirdStorm · 19/10/2026 08:28

I hate voice notes in whatsapp. I dislike voicemails (but only return a call if you leave one) so imagine my delight when my iphones visual voicemail now transcribes the voicemail!

S89 · 19/10/2026 08:29

Absolutely loathe them. If you want to speak to me, ring me. Anyone who voice notes me gets a written reply.

ParsonMaybold · 19/10/2026 08:31

Loathe them. I delete without listening.
