I'm often confused by discussions around poverty, addiction, and crime because they seem to focus heavily on society and not much on individual responsibility

For context, I'm autistic, grew up in a low-income household, and my dad was largely absent and neglectful. He rarely showed up, wasn't particularly involved, and wasn't much of a support. Despite that, I never got involved in crime or drugs.
Instead, I used the support that was available. I got help from charities, received government support related to my disability and employment, and eventually found a professional job. It wasn't easy, but there were people and organisations willing to help.
So what I'm struggling to understand is this: if support exists, why are so many problems framed primarily as society's fault rather than the responsibility of the individual?
I'm not saying circumstances don't matter. Clearly they do. But there seem to be plenty of people who experience poverty, disability, family breakdown, neglect, bullying, etc., and don't end up addicted, committing crimes, or repeatedly making self-destructive choices.

And i dont understand why people who got support still failed

Lots of reasons? Use your imagination.

I’ll suggest some.

Poor mental health
Family structures dragging people down
Family expectations meaning people have learned no aspiration for themselves / feel they can’t control their lives
The support isn’t enough or isn’t the type of support people need
Maybe some people are just fine living how they’ve always lived and its noyb

Also OP, you’re very dismissive to people replying on all your threads. Why?

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 18/10/2026 20:51

This OP started a bullshit thread yesterday evening that was pulled by MN.

AmethystDeceiver · 18/10/2026 20:52

you're the £140K poster right? Who is worried that your £140K savings and £35k job puts you behind other women your age (27)? And you keep starting threads about it?

Either you're winding people up for fun, totally clueless, or have some issues you need to work through with professional support. What reason could you possibly have for these threads??

What is ‘failed’?

The ability to not piss people off is an important skill, if you have that skill you’re already winning. That costs nothing, no amount of cash will help you with that.

”I used the support that was available. I got help from charities, received government support related to my disability and employment, and eventually found a professional job. It wasn't easy, but there were people and organisations willing to help.”

And your mum gave you £100,000.

Fair point 🤣🤣

bababamama · 18/10/2026 20:55

Not everyone has even the guidance to seek help, others have poor influences in their family, friends, neighbourhood. Poverty can make it really hard to see a way out. Desperation can cloud judgement

And the racist colleague who sucks up to the boss who is a black woman. That was also pulled.

This is the thread that OP started an hour before this one.

monymonymony · 18/10/2026 20:57

The notions that form our concept of individual responsibility are taught. If you’re raised by wolves, you learn to eat rabbits. You learn that it’s your individual responsibility to hunt and catch a rabbit. Feel free to replace the word “rabbit” with poverty, addiction, crime or self-destructive choices—or, in your case, constructive choices, if you’re raised by good wolves. Your notion of what individual responsibility is would suggest you encountered a good wolf at some point your childhood.

I mean … I was abandoned at birth, adopted in a family with an abusive mother, several sexual assaults under my belt and plenty other things and made it out without any support, charities, government funding or help. Why did you need all that when other people don’t ?Do I win a cookie? Am I better than you?

P.S. The only reason why I wasn’t an addict is because drugs don’t really work on me, but fucking hell if I could’ve had an escape during my worst times , i would’ve taken it with both hands and feet!!

Because not everone has the ability of insight plus the gift of self-determination. Blessed are the poor in spirit.

One of which was bumped by MN before they deleted it. 🤔

People exist on a spectrum of ability, resilience, conscientiousness, impulse control and countless other characteristics. Two people can experience similar disadvantages but have very different capacities to overcome them.
Of course poverty, neglect or disability don’t inevitably lead to addiction or criminality, but they do increase the statistical likelihood of adverse outcomes. That’s the distinction between individual experience and population-level trends.
Your experience is admirable, but it doesn’t follow that everyone facing similar circumstances has the same capacity or opportunities to achieve the same outcome. Nor does overcoming adversity make you morally superior to those who struggle.

summitfever · 18/10/2026 21:00

You are fortunately for you, of the personality type and perhaps intelligence, that affords you the ability and autonomy to work your way out that situation independently. Most are not. It’s not rocket science. IQ isn’t a reflection of EQ SQ CQ or AQ, some of which you may be less well endowed in.

I think you failed. Why do you need support? I don't get it. Why should society have to support you? You should have sorted yourself out.

You haven’t answered Fook’s question:
How come you needed support when others didn’t?

The answer to that question is going to help you answer your own question.
