Should we pay for daughter's celebratory meal

Our daughter married long term partner abroad . She asked if we minded if they just had a quiet cremony in a registry office with no guests. We said it was fine by us so long as they are happy and its what they want. She has come to UK ( although living abroad) to see my parents and my sister directly after marriage abd we have all agreed to have a nice meal in a restaurant to welcome newly weds. I think we should pay the resurant bill ( 9 of us) Husband says no.
Am I being unreasonable to insist we pay bill. We can afford it.

OP responding to a few random posts but the many asking why he won’t pay are ignored … so basically we can’t comment if we don’t know the reasons, and these aren’t being shared … pointless thread!

If you're a traditional family then I suggest that you not only pay for the meal, but contribute to the deposit they are saving for a home.

We have paid a large amount towards their deposit .

still not sure why your husband is refusing?

@Eluj
You are obviously still reading ,and come back on to post every now and then, so why aren't you willing to tell us what your dh's reasoning is ?

You are obviously well enough off to be able to afford it, you seem to have generously paid for other things, you say you both understand the small wedding abroad without you, so this is clearly not logical from the information you have given us. Why are you so unwilling to share with us the reason he is giving ?

This is one of those threads where the OP either willfully doesn't respond to pages of the same question - for a laugh, who knows why- or doesn't understand how these things work.

Someone who gets a kick out of wasting everyone’s time, I suppose. Takes all sorts.

It would be nice to pay for it.

Had they had a "normal" wedding then no doubt there would have been additional expenses for you. And bearing in mind she lives abroad then you may have had flights to cover as well.

A nice meal for 9 could be £500-£600 - but probably cheaper than flights and accommodation. I would see it as a win!

Good luck getting a nice meal for nine for £500!

(Of course the OP should pay.)

When you say "they had a quiet cremony in a registry office with no guests" does this mean you and your husband were excluded from the ceremony too? If so, perhaps he feels rejected and hurt by not being present at his daughter's wedding.

Seajaye · 20/10/2026 08:10

Without knowing why your husband is refusing to pay for the celebratory family meal for an otherwise accepted marriage, I can't see how the rest of Mumsnet can really give a view.

Paying for the family meal is a perfectly reasonable and lovely gesture to mark the wedding, but we don't know why he is holding back. Is it because the grooms parents would normally organise and fund this type of and he doesn't want to tred on their toes? Or does he want to invite wider family and has been shut down on that idea?

Love how OP returned to tell us they paid a large amount to the house deposit but ignored every single question asked, including the crucial one ‘WHY did he say no?’ Hmm

CatA27 · 20/10/2026 09:56

Wow, we always pay for family meals out if it is us who has suggested it. 6 adult children (all with partners) between us and 3 grandchildren with 2 more on the way 🥰 What.reason does you husband give for not wanting to pay?

TiredMummma · 20/10/2026 12:55

Of course you offer to pay!!

We got married abroad, 32 years ago.Booked a holiday to Kos and decided to get married whilst out there, managed to keep it quiet.
We phoned our parents after the event, they were very happy for us.( although MIL has since changed her mind)

My parents booked and paid for a meal in a local hotel a few weeks afterwards, hired a mini bus so people could drink. They invited immediate family from both sides, had a lovely time, I couldnt imagine not doing the same for any of our DC
think someone said your DH is a tight arse, have to agree with that!
