AIBU to think that 15 degrees inside is cold not cool?

It's 15.2 degrees upstairs and 16 degrees downstairs.

A bedroom window had been left open all day. By DH. Not helpful.

I'm freezing. I suggested putting the heating on. The heating isn't working properly at the moment so we can only heat the whole house, rather than upstairs and downstairs, individually.

DH thinks it's a problem to heat upstairs on the basis it's meant to be "cool" upstairs. He hates a warm bedroom. I say there's a huge difference between cool and cold, and 15 degrees inside a house is bloody freezing.

Am I being unreasonable?!

18 is the usually minimum recommended by health professionals although I’d find 15 better for sleep even though I do have asthma

whats wrong with heating the house during the day to something sensible and then letting it cool
slowlu after about 8pm and using a hot water bottle

Actually my detached house is very well insulated, so I have been told, but rarely have heating much above 15,
obviously increase it if it’s colder. Not much above 20 though.

That makes absolutely no sense

if you don’t have the heating above 15 the insulation is irrelevant and how does it get to 20 if you don’t have it above 15 and if it’s 15 it won’t be much colder ???

Bubblesgun · Yesterday 21:39

Definitely cold.

a bedroom at night ie. When sleeping 17/18 degrees. During the day the whole house should be at 19/20. My house is set at 21 but we have heat pump. We had an issue last feb and the wholw house went down to 15 during the day and 14 at night we have a BER of A2. I tell you thank the god we have 2 supee efficient stoves because it mean the house went up to 17.

yes i do understand some people have to choose between heating and eating, but you shouldbt have to and the government should really do something about that

Does nobody on MN agree a sensible temperature and set a thermostat?

Applestroodle · Yesterday 21:44

If you are cold at 15 degrees, you are cold. It doesn’t matter if somebody else isn’t cold at 15.

StrangerOnline · Yesterday 21:45

15° is definitely cold, not cool. (I think that’s ok for a bedroom though it’s down to individual preference)

This thermometer strip is part of a leaflet from AgeUK so I’m not sure if it is because older people are more sensitive to cold weather. They have less muscle tone apparently.

Definitely cold if you have a thyroid issue. I would need the heating on to take the chill off at that temperature.

Rockpunkdisco · Yesterday 21:46

Sorry, I'm totally a cold climate person and 16 degrees is my perfect temperature 🌡 👌!

The rest of my family don't agree, put heating on, while I sit in front of a fan!

Turn your bedroom thermostat down and shut the door. The rest of the house can be heated and he doesn't get to whinge about the bedroom.

The OP already said they can't do that. It's all or nothing.

JasmineMac · Yesterday 21:51

We've had ground frost this weekend. I've set the thermostat target temp to 21, I find anything less just too cold. That said, I need a cooler room to sleep, thus it's rare for me to have the radiator in our bedroom on, it has to be properly freezing outside for that!

NimbleTaupeTiger · Yesterday 21:51

Heating comes on when it's below 20°C but goes off at 9.00pm allowing the house to cool. We sleep with the window open in the bedroom. 15/16°C is miserably cold 🥶

My bad I interpreted it that they had two thermostats one for upstairs and one for downstairs. Usually you can isolate a single radiator regardless of what your thermostat controls. Sounds like a seriously messed up heating system that OP has then.

Santasbigredbobblehat · Yesterday 21:54

I just went to see what the thermostat says and it was showing 17.5 in my living room, which feels ok for me. Any cooler would be a bit uncomfortable.

bananaapplepears · Yesterday 21:55

15 is not cold or cool for me, it's perfectly comfortable. I am sitting in the living room right now with a window slightly open. I think a few other windows are open too actually. When I WFH in the winter, the rooms sit around 12 and I still feel OK. I've always run warm and hate stuffy heat. Fresh, cool air always feels cleaner and healthier to me. I see I'm in the minority though.

Agree. I like a cold house though and did switch on the heating for a few hours when night fell to 5C (N Scotland). No heating in bedroom and with the window open all winter. I prefer a heated throw in a cold tv room, it's so cosy.
15C indoors is just throw on a jumper time but understand it might be cold for others.

mindutopia · Yesterday 22:03

You’d die here. 😂 Our house is kept at about 15c all winter! It’s an old farmhouse and nearly 4000 sq ft. I’m not keeping that at 23c and I’m melting at that temp. We wear jumpers and socks and are perfectly comfortable.

I do turn up the heat when we have overnight guests though. And sweat.

RaraRachael · Yesterday 22:18

Can't stand a house that's too hot.
We were in a relative's house yesterday that was 22 degrees. I felt absolutely awful and couldn't wait to escape.

Have you or your DH organised for someone to come and sort this out?

Yup. But it won't be for a few weeks.

No.

We don't have a thermostat in the bedroom.

You have radiators don’t you? Turn them
off upstairs.

We can't turn them off!

I think very few people would genuinely be comfortable sitting in a 12 degree temp in indoor clothing. That’s really very unusual.

I'm in my thirties 🤣 Thermal tights, a jumper and a blanket sorted me out eventually!

Out of interest where are you that means the average temp is 12 degrees? Or do you never have heating on?

tillyandmilly · Yesterday 22:50

15 degrees is not freezing- bit on the cold side - I always have a bedroom window open even in the winter - hate stuffy rooms ! Our flat is warm 19 degrees with no heating on - if chilly we sit under throws -
