To ask how you clean your glasses?

There seems to be several different ways to clean your glasses. I noticed the opticians sell spray that you spray on before cleaning with a cloth.
Is this necessary , it just adds to the expense ?
I know people that clean them using a bit of washing up liquid, then letting them dry and then cleaning them with a dry cloth???

Can you share the way you clean your glasses please?

Wet wipe then microfibre cloth. Also wash with washing up liquid. A microfibre cloth works really well on its own too, much better than clothing or the cloth that’s provided with the glasses.

Chickadee26 · 18/10/2026 04:58

Spray and soft cloth.

Empress13 · 18/10/2026 05:26

I buy the screen cleaner wipes 99p from Aldi

InterestedDad37 · 18/10/2026 05:33

Whatever I'm wearing on top 😂 👓
Mind you, I have several shirts which have a 'lens wipe' detail as a design feature on the inner bottom corner of one side of the front of the shirt (see pic).

My glasses lenses have a coating on them, and I’ve learned the hard (and very expensive 🤦🏼‍♀️!) way that washing liquid shouldn’t be used to clean them 😬.

It’s partially stripped the coating off, and it’s still getting worse, even though I no longer use that method. They cost me £400 a few years ago, so I’m delaying buying a new pair until the coating moves into my line of vision, and I have no choice 🫤.

My work uniform fleece is a great glasses cleaning cloth. On non work days I use a micro fiber cloth which does a good job. If they’re very dirty I use fairy liquid, shake them dry then use the microfiber cloth.

DP has loads of the little cleaning cloths you get with new glasses, he always has one on hand in a
pocket when we’re out and about

I breathe on them then rub them on whatever I'm wearing. My work uniform gives the best shine.

This - every time.

dancinginthekitchen · 18/10/2026 06:20

I use the spray - free from my optician. They will also refill the little bottle for free when you run out

Omg this is genius! However, I’ve never seen this on women’s clothing? Are designers of men’s clothing annoyed women can have pockets now so thinking of additional things for menswear? 🤣

🤣🤣🤣 Man-bags never really went 'mainstream', so we had to have something 🤣🤣

T1MumOf1 · 18/10/2026 14:53

I just run them under cold water and clean with a mircofibre cloth sometimes use ear buds to get in the difficult places when needed. Most of the time I just wipe the lenses with my sleeves lol.

Any optician recommending you use detergent or hot water should also be aware that both will damage the coatings!
If your lenses are coated, do not use detergent or hot water. Tepid water if you must, but it is far better to use the spray they recommend with a soft clean cloth. Not kitchen roll etc.
And yes, I’m an optician and some of these cleaning techniques are making me wince!

DiggoryVenn · 18/10/2026 17:11

I had a very bad experience with cleaning with glasses in an ultrasonic bath - it turned the plastic white. The water may have been too hot though.

I now just use a cloth and if really bad a bit of washing up liquid.

Armorlux · 18/10/2026 18:10

I wonder how many pp wear glasses all the time and / or have very expensive lenses with various coatings. Washing up liquid, rubbing them on clothes, breathing and rubbing etc are all definitely not the way to go if you've just paid £600+ for a pair of specs you're hoping to wear for some time.

For the record I use the individual sachets recommended by the optician. One a day cleans them perfectly and,as I'm not taking them on and off continually, they stay clean.
Over the decades I've tried all the other methods and certainly wouldn't now.

66babe · 18/10/2026 18:19

I take great pleasure in washing my glasses every morning at work with the expensive Fairy liquid
My Aldi stuff at home is just for the dishes

MyGlassesMyGlasses · 18/10/2026 18:29

This isn’t about cleaning but just to vent as I’m sure posters here have spent a lot on glasses. And I just want to vent really! i recently got a new pair for over £500 (very cheapest option, complicated prescription). THREE weeks later I had an epilepsy seizure and they got broken beyond repair Angry So the replacement pair will be cleaned with optician spray and cloth - like they are a newborn baby made from glass!

UniquePinkSwan · 18/10/2026 18:34

Whatever I am wearing on the day

CallMeFran · 18/10/2026 18:46

I use wipes from Amazon that come in boxes of 300. I have them everywhere, kitchen, living room, bedroom, car, office, handbags and laptop bag. They’re literally everywhere. My glasses seem to get dirty very easily.

Koriko · 18/10/2026 18:48

I use the spray... if it's nearby. (Whatever I'm wearing if it's not)

NotMeNoNo · 18/10/2026 18:54

My glasses are expensive so I do have a stash of e-cloths and bottles of lens cleaner. Individual wipes for backup. It's a bit of a false economy to save on the right cleaning products IMO.

BigBadPotato · 18/10/2026 18:56

Busybookworm · 17/10/2026 14:32

I wipe them on my top.

I am probably not the right person to ask!

☝️ and when they get really rank (these darn toddlers!!) then it’s under the tap with a squiz of fairy liquid for a rubadubdub

DobbyTheHouseElk · 18/10/2026 19:01

Washing up liquid, warm water. The spray from the optician smears. It was free though..

I do buy wipes but haven’t for ages.

Disclaimer. I’m not a glasses wearer, but the DC are, so I have to clean their glasses otherwise they’d be thick with baked bean juice, mud, snot etc…
