To ask how you clean your glasses?

There seems to be several different ways to clean your glasses. I noticed the opticians sell spray that you spray on before cleaning with a cloth.
Is this necessary , it just adds to the expense ?
I know people that clean them using a bit of washing up liquid, then letting them dry and then cleaning them with a dry cloth???

Can you share the way you clean your glasses please?

Had to jump on this thread as it’s a permanent source of disagreement I have with my husband.

My method if out and about breathe on the lens and rub on my clothing. If at home, run under tap , dish soap or fairy liquid. Dry on loo paper , towel or clothes. I’m not fussy. Yes my lenses are often scratched but my prescription changes regularly as my eyes deteriorate.

Husband buys individual sachet of lens wipes by the box load. I grumble about those going into landfill. I’m probably unreasonable considering we are not the hottest on recycling but I think they are an unnecessary waste.

They are only supposed to be used if the lenses are already clean though I think? 🤔 😆

Wipes.

tulippa · 17/10/2026 15:06

I rub mine my on my jumper when I feel like I can't see through them properly. And scrape off any make up residue with my fingernail when I notice it. 🙂

PenCreed · 17/10/2026 15:12

DH’s glasses have a coating that will apparently break down with washing up liquid, so he now uses the spray. I mist mine and wipe with a glasses cloth, but I also mostly wear contacts so mine need less cleaning!

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 17/10/2026 15:18

Breathe on them and use my top or dressing gown depending on what I'm wearing.

When they get too smeary, I use a squirt of Windolene on a piece of kitchen roll and also give my phone screen a wipe with it.

duckydoo234 · 17/10/2026 15:31

I breathe on them and rub them on my top, or whatever's most cotton-y (man made materials leave them all streaky)

pinkpony88 · 17/10/2026 15:36

I breathe on them then wipe them on the hem of my dress until such time as they are so dirty I think I might actually have a cataract then I wash them in fairy liquid and dry with kitchen roll.

Crystallllll · 17/10/2026 15:39

Glass cleaner spray and microfibre cloth. I keep a small bottle and cloth in my bag for at work as they get so grubby.

GentleSheep · 17/10/2026 15:40

Breathe on them and rub dry with a tissue.

I was going to mention this - some coatings apparently don't like detergent.

I tend to shampoo mine when I'm in the bath or shower, rinse under the hot top, leave on the side to air dry while I finish washing and rinsing me

Crystallllll · 17/10/2026 15:40

I don’t like cleaning them on my top as it just smears and I can’t see properly.

NoisyMonster678 · 17/10/2026 15:44

I use a window and glass spray on my glasses as well as screens after the glasses sprays became very expensive and I have been doing this for years.

Cost effective 1500 ml bottle, the colour is light green and it loves the jobs you hate!

Not sure if I can post the brand name!

Spray a tissue with this stuff and wipe glasses and screens then polish with the lense cloth. The tissue is wet, so it is soft on lenses and screens. The lense cloth is also great for screens.

When you can save your selves a few £ here and there, its always worth it! 😃👍

AlwaysExtraHot · 17/10/2026 15:47

An optician also told me, when I’ve filled a bowl with hot soapy water for washing up, use that. Not sure what you’re meant to use to dry them but I think kitchen roll might be a bit scratchy.
Ive also just bought screen wipes for my laptop ; wonder if those would work?

ILoveKits · 17/10/2026 15:47

Lens cleaning wipes and the little cloths from the optician. I have been cleaning my glasses all the time for about a year. Makes no difference. Cataract op now scheduled!

Ggeordie · 17/10/2026 15:50

Individual wipes

or

spray and cloth - this provides the best results

UnimatrixZeroOne · 17/10/2026 14:33

I breathe on them then rub them on whatever I'm wearing. My work uniform gives the best shine.

Me too ! Occasionally wash them under the tap with washing up liquid

Topseyt123 · 17/10/2026 16:29

I run them under the cold tap in the bathroom or kitchen if at home and then dry/polish them on my t-shirt.

If out and about I breathe on the lenses and again, also dry them on my t-shirt.

SumptuousPecanNougat · 17/10/2026 16:32

We have some spray made for cleaning glasses, but I rarely use it. Just a dry microfibre cloth (most of my glasses have come with one or two, but you can buy them, too) is usually enough. If it's stubborn, I may breath on the lenses before wiping. Does the trick!

ETA: I used to wipe my glasses on the edge of my shirt, but stopped after noticing I was getting tiny scratches on the lenses (caused by particles of grit or something on my clothes, maybe?). I seem to have less trouble with that when I used a dedicated microfibre cloth.

Papyrophile · 17/10/2026 16:58

Fairy liquid and warm water, dried with a clean linen tea towel.

Netcurtainnelly · 17/10/2026 20:09

Can someone invent self cleaning glasses 🙏

OP posts:
Millytante · 17/10/2026 20:10

On the hem of my jumper or T shirt!

caffelattetogo · 17/10/2026 20:10

Busybookworm · 17/10/2026 14:32

I wipe them on my top.

I am probably not the right person to ask!

me too

tobee · 17/10/2026 21:58

Not fairy liquid coz as others have said the coating doesn’t like it.

Mine are frequently bad because of finger prints which I can’t stop myself from doing. I use wipes when out but they often leave a film of the stuff makes it worse. Spray is better because less liquid. Proper glasses cloth - but if you put in the wash they can have washing liquid/conditioner residue.

monkeysee15 · 18/10/2026 01:35

These. I’m really really picky and even the opticians never get my glasses clean properly but these cloths are great

I use the spray and lense cloth when I remember. Also my top in between. I used to use liquid hand soap and washing up liquid but my glasses lost the protective film and my optician said they can damage the lense coating. I wouldn't use vinegar for the same reason., too risky.
