Why is bread shit now?

Im not talking about artisanal handcrafted loaves from a bakery. I mean standard sliced loaves from the supermarket.
Is it me or has it suddenly become shit?! Tasteless and thin? Have they stopped using salt or something? Its weird. Ive tried loads of different brands

You've probably got COVID

I don't buy a lot bread so I haven't noticed but I refuse to buy bread that contains any form of palm oil so my choices are limited. I have a breadmaker for making the occasional loaf.

I wont buy any bread that has "emulsifiers" in, always knocks me out and makes me feel ill, I'd rather not eat bread than eat the slop its become.

I haven't eaten bread for about 3 years since being diagnosed with coeliac disease, (and gluten-free bread is vile IMO.) But DH hasn't complained. I get Warburtons for him. (White.)

I have definitely noticed this with the Co-op sourdough loaves. I used to like them, but they are completely tasteless now. Can’t say I’ve noticed it with granary loaves, though.

I gave up on shop bread about 2 years ago. It's tasteless and has the texture of wet blotting paper. 😕 And I didn't want to feed my ds "mould inhibitor".

Now I order a sack of wholemeal flour and make it myself most weekends. It's surprisingly quick & easy.

Set the yeast & sugar in warm water when you first get up. Make a coffee & go back to bed for 10 mins.
Mix the flour, salt, oil & yeasty water, knead for 10 mins. Leave it to rise.
Have your shower, get dressed, have breakfast.
Knock it down and knead it again, put it in the tin, leave for an hour (while I do the weekly food shop)
In the oven for 45 mins while I put the shopping away, make another coffee and plan lunch.

Generally it's on a cooling rack by 11am. Total actual effort, 2+10+5 minutes.
Cost for a large wholemeal loaf that tastes fab and doesn't cause bloating, £1.00

Or you could use a bread maker.

Since lockdown we've been seeded sourdough all the way. Get a new loaf every other day from our local bakery. The only times I have shop bread now is if I've called at my parents and they're having a bacon sandwich - then it's Warbuton's thick sliced. And occasionally I do crave it.

I saw the thread title and thought, no it's not! Then opened the thread and saw you meant UPF sliced supermarket bread. Of course that's awful.

I only eat the artisan sourdough or other proper breads and I love it! Just buy the good stuff from the bakery.

I wouldn't dream of eating UPF sliced bread
