Christmas plans

AIBU for wanting to spend Christmas at home this year? For context, we lived away since the kids were born and drove to spend a week with my inlaws at Christmas every year since.
Now we live 5 minutes down the road, and I'd like to spend our first Christmas day together just as a family of 4 in our home, and have the in-laws over on boxing day for a meal.
DH is not liking the idea because of how we've always done it in previous years. It feels really important to me that we get the chance to do this now, as we never have. AIBU?!

Of course YANBU.

Where does seeing your family come in to this ?

Fidgety31 · 16/10/2026 22:00

tell him you’re happy for him to go on his own and you stay home with the kids

Time for the apron strings to be cut. DH has spent every Christmas with you and his wider family? How was that decided?

if they’re five minutes down the road can ye not meet in the middle and have them come over for opening Santa presents or in the evening for tea and drinks? If my parents were five minutes down the road there’s no way I wouldn’t see them Christmas Day tbh!!

To add to my first post, I can see there are compromises to be made ......

His parents come round for drinks in the morning and see the dc
or
You all (or him and the dc) go round there for an hour
or
You meet up later in the day (don't know how old your dc are, or when you eat your main meal) - all go for a walk after your separate dinners, or invite them round or you walk round to theirs for some games or present exchange in the afternoon.

There are 101 different ways to do it, when you are local. It doesn't have to be "We always go to Mum's for the day" vs "We don't see them at all".

But you are 100% right to make some traditions of your own, whether it sometimes excludes them altogether or is a bit more of a compromise.

It’s only one day

I’d go round to them in the afternoon. Then you can leave when you want and can’t be wheedled into staying for the main meal.
