To be offended that a man I'm dating inspected my flat and criticised my belongings? Or am I a 'secret hoarder'?

I recently started dating a guy who initially seemed so promising, affectionate and ambitious (... if a little pedantic and reserved).

The first few dates went amazingly well. Lovely walk and a drink, then a dinner date, then on the third date, he invited me back to his place. He owns a very minimal, yet beautifully designed 3-bedroom house and garden. Impressive, yet spotless - every single item on display appears catalogue curated. I do remember being anxious at the time, as I wondered whether my quirky little rental apartment would size up. And I felt out of place and clumsy in this 'perfect' home.

For context, I live alone and adore my own apartment. It's a 1-bed Victorian rental conversion (not quite a privately owned 3-bed, but hey!) and it became a sanctum of my inner world after a very traumatic break up years ago. It's the first place I've ever lived alone and felt my own. I have all of my lovely vintage furniture in there, all my books and journals (I'm finishing a PhD), prints on the wall and loads of sentimental trinkets and objects from travels dotted around.
I also love doing art work in my free time, so my dining table is often loaded up with art materials and projects I'm working on.
Definitely tons of stuff that I need to donate/recycle - but the space is kept clean and is not piled up. I would call it 'busy'.

When I did invite him around, I sensed instantly that he was sizing it up. I guess it's not uncommon to be curious and have a nosy around when you first enter someone's place (I do the same), but there was something that felt off.

He flat out said, after 'inspecting' my apartment - "I didn't know you were a secret hoarder". I was really offended, but decided to brush it off. (Before cooking him a meal, yes, silly me...)

The second time that he arranged to came round, I ended up manically cleaning, tidying and decluttering before he arrived, because I was so on edge about him making another comment.
He saw the boxes laid out to go to the charity shop the next day and immediately commented "you see what I mean!"
He then proceeded to dry dust my TV and laptop unasked for the next 20 minutes, alongside making snide comments about my reading taste ("I can tell you're a feminist sighs".

When I've been around to his place since, I feel like I'm walking on eggshells. He already claims that I've scuffed the wall in two places, but can't confirm where..?

Obviously, I know these are red flags. I'm close to sacking things off with him, but it has made me paranoid that maybe, in fact, I am a slovenly person with hoarding tendencies??? I've always had a 'one in, on out' system for buying new items, but I do love surrounding myself with memories and interests. I guess this is just incompatible with some people. I do get that we have our own ways of living.

I worry because my parents are LEGIT hoarders i.e. there is one path that leads its way through the house because they have stacks upon stacks of miscellaneous items that they can't let go of at all - as in, it's emotionally unbearable for them to do so. And no one knows where the valuable/sentimental items are within the 'shite'. At one point, they were worried a rat had escaped into the mess... I know that I'll have to be helping out with some of that soon, so to be referred to as a 'secret hoarder' myself is a real blow.

Do I need to reassess my own living space and background, or can I just conclude that this recent dating partner is at best incompatible, at worst officious?

Both.

Well, I dunno. According to the pics by @Hellopretty if you can actually get into your kitchen without climbing over stuff on the floor, you're ok op!

YouareJustApreciousLittleGem · 15/10/2026 18:48

He has 3 bedroom empty house, empty of memories, trinkets and relatives. He probably hates pets also...let him go and lick his concrete wall and white washed palster

TwinklySquid · 15/10/2026 18:48

He’s testing you on what you’ll accept. I wouldn’t accept that shit at all. Leave him

Calliopespa · 15/10/2026 18:41

These are useless!
The first couple of bunches leap from tediously tidy in Number 1 to appalling in number 2. And by the end ...😆

ETA Look at Number 9 on the last one!

Edited

Well yes. I’m just over no 1. Def not no 2 with crap all over the floor

maybe I’m not a hoarder then

I like photos books etc so have stuff

ReadingTime · 15/10/2026 18:50

He sounds rude and nasty, but it also sounds like you could do with a massive declutter. Having lots of things you love and want and use are fine, it doesn’t need to look sterile, but if you’re keeping stuff your parents have foisted on you out of guilt, then you do have a problem.

The love still exists whether or not the stuff stays in your house, you’re not rejecting their love by passing on the sports equipment to someone else who can use it.

I find reframing it as passing things on rather than getting rid of them helps with letting things go.

honeylulu · 15/10/2026 18:50

Please stop worrying about what he thinks of you. Consider what you think of him. Because I've never met him and I think he's a rude, bossy, snide know-it-all with a stick up his arse.

It's one thing if one partner is tidy and minimal and the other is more relaxed and enjoys "stuff". But sneering and criticising someone else's home when you are a guest is Grade A cuntishness. When I read the bit where he referred to you being a feminist as a negative thing i thought he deserves the heave-ho for that alone!

I know. Having just posted about small-minded people having overly tidy homes, I'm now feeling like chucking some stuff on the floor so I can at least qualify for picture 2!

It has to be said the photo scale ramps up quite fast ...

Brokentoes85 · 15/10/2026 18:51

I'm finishing a PhD 😂🤣😂🤣

worldshottestmom · 15/10/2026 18:52

He hates feminists (women), he's insulted your living space cos it isn't the same as his, he's falsely accused you of "scuffing his walls" (bit ocd for me), OP, come on. Obviously this one is for the perfectly clean, display-only, misogynistic bin.

Totally. I feel that I’m tidy now 😂😂

Calliopespa · 15/10/2026 18:52

Please get in and bin him first. Tell him his house put you off!

Ratcherinthepye · 15/10/2026 18:53

BadgerBadgerBear · 15/10/2026 14:08

I think you can do both

bin him off as he’s clearly rude, and you are different in how you live

but also, given your parents, take a look at whether you are heading that way…

This exactly. There may well be truth in what he’s saying but the way he is going about it is awful. I can’t imagine making those sorts of comments to someone I’ve just started seeing. He’s supposed to be trying to impress you at this stage and show his charm!

I had a guy comment on the messiness of my room when I was doing my masters and flat sharing. And he ended up being generally hyper critical of me.

We are friends to this day but the writing was on the wall really that we weren’t going to work as a relationship.

I mean there were things about his house I could’ve criticised but I didn’t.

It sounds like you’re still trying to impress him and he’s not trying to impress you, instead he is just looking down on you. It’s a recipe for disaster. Best to get out now.

I'm actually feeling deflated.

I think there is a whole sequence of photos they just cut out - sort of clean but interesting.

This is a really salient point to me.

What struck me was how the OP was able to be pleasant and see the appeal, albeit not her style, of his place, and yet he couldn't have the same flexibility of mind in the reverse. Which brings me back to my point above about small-mindedness and tidiness.

Quite honestly, I find this on a lot of fronts - people who sneer about untidiness, about other people's weight, about other people's lifestyles in general are often not so much organised or healthy etc as scared rigid of negative judgment because that's how their own mind works.

Boreded · 15/10/2026 18:58

You’re ’close’ to sacking him off…YABU, he should have been gone already.

You built your home and put part of yourself into it, he has come in and criticised. How rude.

If he can’t behave himself this early in the relationship how do you think he will be when he has his feet under your (never quite clean enough for him) table.

You are worth more, toss this one back

eveningprimrose74 · 15/10/2026 18:58

Who else is screaming at this post!

I've only a few minutes as I'm in work, 1), this guy is supposed to be dating YOU not your blooming flat.
2) men can be minimalists, my brother used to whine all my sh*t was everywhere. And now I have a 1 bed flat i quite agree it is everywhere.

My ex, fully admitted he modelled himself on jack reacher & would only have 1 of everything, THAT IS THEIR PROBLEMS. Another ex used to run a finger along my kitchen worktops & complain (how've he lived with his mother & had no kitchen of his own) these kind of males are making you question yourself.
Sack this guy off. He had lovebombed you, him being all marvellous, then hit you with oh by the way I'm a clean freak.
He isn't dating your flat. get rid of it.
Best of luck

Voneska · 15/10/2026 18:59

When we meet a dating partner for the first time, as a fully grown , mature adult. We forget that we're not looking for a father to our children and maybe all different scenarios start appearing in our minds....The first few months of getting to know someone are fraught with uncertain thoughts. Whats the harm in Two people being connected but dont share a living space. If I was you : I would definitely NOT invite him to dinner again until you can be sure that a bit of dust isn't going to cause distress. If he dont see it then he can't make digs at you about it. SORTED.

GlomOfNit · 15/10/2026 19:01

Oh god OP, do you really have time in your busy and precious one life for a judgy fecker who thinks because you are interesting and have stuff you love and use around you, that you're lacking in some way? That, god forbid, you're a feminist? I mean that alone in a new BF would have me running for the hills. Why does he NOT want you to be a feminist, I wonder?

Tell him to fuck off. Good luck with your PhD and enjoy your lovely-sounding flat.

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 15/10/2026 19:02

I don't think you're a hoarder and I don't think he's at fault either. Its basically a case of being incompatible. Hes not right for you and vice versa. You each like different surroundings which would cause problems further down the line

SevenYellowHammers · 15/10/2026 19:05

The snide comment about your feminist books is the only information you need to get rid.

Thank you <3 I definitely knew this deep down, but I guess needed a tad of reassurance!

It's so easy to get blindsided by people who - on the surface, at least - live these immaculately polished lives.

I suspect he may have demons underneath.

Oh I think he most definitely has demons underneath. OP - look at how he has made you feel, like you are walking on eggshells and questioning yourself and how you live, after only a few dates. This will only get worse - you thought it was promising, but now you know more about him and it’s shown you that he is not promising in the slightest. Your house sounds awesome.

Note that the OP managed to refrain from a stream of criticisms the first time she went to his house. That’s the issue here, basic manners, not incompatibility.

Makingmusicinmy50s · 15/10/2026 19:08

I'd be more concerned about the 'so you're a feminist' comment, followed by a sigh. Big red flag.
Edge a lot closer to sacking off this mysoginist twat now.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/10/2026 19:10

TBH he sounds insufferable. Certainly fit for the bin.
