As in Charlie Higson's annoying, socially inept office joker from The Fast Show.

Are there certain type of jobs or social settings where Colins are more prevalent?

Where's the pork! Sorry OP, couldn't resist that. I did work with a bloke back in the 80's who who was dangerously close to being like Colin. He was in his late fifties and a practical joker, so he'd put a bit of soot on your telephone handset and other such side splitting pranks. And yes, it was as un-fucking funny as it sounds. On the other hand, his name was Malcolm Glasscock which was very funny indeed. Sorry Malcolm if you're reading.

You have to wonder if, with a name like that, he's cultivated his persona as a defence mechanism!

Yes twice. The first was when we were at school which was when the Fast Show was first on. Lad called Matthew Hoggart. He had the same hair too but his was naturally that way. Prior to that the TV character he most resembled was Chuckie from Rugrats

Then about 10 years ago, bloke called John who thankfully retired. Just as well because his retirement speech would probably have got him fired

We had an IT guy in our organisation like this until very recently. He’s one of the very few people who didn’t have his temp contract renewed.

He did LARP as a hobby and bored everyone shitless recounting his weekend meet ups with other LARPers. He had the exact same cadence as Colin Hunt. It was entertaining watching an entire room suddenly clear out whenever he appeared.

Yes, I often wondered that. I mean, I expect the poor guy had more than his fair share of teasing as a kid. Maybe it was a defence mechanism!
