To think free flu jabs for NHS admin staff is ridiculous??

My SIL is admin staff in the NHS, she has no patient contact and no real contact with medical staff, beyond half an hour a week.

She’s just got a free flu jab! AIBU to think this is disgusting? It must cost the NHS so much, admin staff should have to pay. I agree that frontline staff should get it for free to protect the vulnerable but admin staff shouldn’t.

You clearly have something against your SIL and other admins for that matter. Why are you so invested? Particularly when you quote that teachers are essential. If you knew half of your SIL job you would realise that admins within the NHS are also essential. Sort yourself out, honestly.

It’s simply not a priority. Admin staff should have to get it, but they should pay out of their pockets. It’s only £15! They shouldn’t be getting it for free.

You think their employer should be ble to oblige them to do something that costs them money? Bollocks!

Many employers I have worked for offer it for free, even coming in to the office to do them, it is worth the return to reduce sickness. It also won’t cost the nhs £15 as they have the resources in house cheaper purchase prices, bulk buying power and no profit factored in as is the case for private providers.

What exactly is your problem? Are you jealous of your SIL?

Gallowayan · 13/10/2026 18:26

This is an idiotic OP. All employers put in place safeguards of some kind for their staff because it pays them to do so.

If you work in the private sector, in a factory for example, you would be given free safety boots ear defenders and protective clothing costing more than £15.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 13/10/2026 18:27

Vaccinate the strong (most children and adults), to protect the weak (ill people in hospital), vaccinating nhs admin staff isn’t just about protecting them… same with children receiving the nasal vaccination at school.

I don’t mind any public sector worker being offered a free flu jag. It doesn’t seem to extend to teachers though 🙈

The schools in the academy trust I work for offer it to all school staff who want it. Seems to be up to the individual academy trusts though.

ParrotPeach · 13/10/2026 18:27

Lots of employers offer free flu jabs. I work for the council and they do for us, and they did at the online retailers I worked for before that. The actual health service not offering it would be pretty tight, imo!

NHS admin is half the reason it’s impossible to access care!

Gosh, this is really petty.

LittleGreenDuck · 13/10/2026 18:28

Would you begrudge those staff an £8 a year pay rise? Just over 15p a week. That’s the cost of the flu jab even you don’t take into account potential costs of sick staff.

You probably would, wouldn’t you?

AnswerIsNo · 13/10/2026 18:29

why am I getting vibez of a poorly-camouflaged, Farage-esque, defund the NHS message?

your adding weight to my hypothesis, OP

If you wish to keep digging, I have many large spades....

and my apartment smells of rich antibac gel mahogany

Shhh, don’t let OP know that millions must get spent on the school flu vaccination programme too. Then she might really lose her shit!

How did you work that out?

either you’re on a wind up, or you’re seriously lacking any critical thinking

Admin staff help keep it running, so makes sense for them to have it.

Many employers give employees free jabs as it makes good business sense

No we shouldn't have to have it. If it makes you feel better about it the majority of my team don't have it.

I assume you dislike your SIL .

All hospital staff , care home staff , nursery staff,GPsurgery staff should have a free flu jab . Other companies should pay for their staff to have a flu jab . I would like to make it compulsory for everyone except people who can't for some reason have it . I lost a family member to flu in their 50s , it can be very serious .

AnswerIsNo · 13/10/2026 18:21

so the admin staff stay in their own quarantined room all day and use separate toilets to the rest of the NHS staff, thus preventing any spread of viruses?

nope

how many times have you been sat in a clinical setting and watched a doctor or nurse walk over to an admin desk and speak to them?

that's one example of an exposure route, then you have people coughing, sneezing in corridors, toilets

the OP is a troll and its a poorly-thought out wind-up that is easily de-constructed using basics of airborne and fomite virus transmission... that was re-taught to everyone in real time during the pandemic

Edited

I suggested no such thing.
And was talking about Covid, incorrectly, and apologised to the poster for that error.

Cute opinion. Amusing you'd think access would be so much easier without them.

ConsideringBaby2 · 13/10/2026 18:32

I have regular contact with admin staff, popping into the office etc. I visit many schools and homes, other community locations so classed as a super spreader. If they are in contact with me makes sense to help them

bigboykitty · 13/10/2026 18:32

GingerdeadMan · 13/10/2026 18:34

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 17:21

Which is why I agree they need them. Just not at a cost to the taxpayer!

Do you not understand the term 'cost- benefit analysis'?

Its a net benefit to the tax payer 🙄

If they've got a nurse going round the department jabbing all the clinical staff, it costs bugger all extra per person if they do the admin staff as well - and then everyone is less likely to be off sick for 2 weeks and spread flu to the patients.

They don't have individual limousines giving them lifts to private clinics where they get champagne on arrival and a complimentary massage!

lots of admin staff work in patient areas, even if their role isn't strictly patient facing.

It’s very evident that this is about the dislike of your SIL not the flu jab being free.

WimbyAce · 13/10/2026 18:34

While we are at it you can also have my kids ones as they have also never had it.

Pipe down. Who are you to decide what is a priority?! Do you not realise that if admin staff are off sick it can have a knock on effect to clinical services or are you just simply stupid?
