To think free flu jabs for NHS admin staff is ridiculous??

My SIL is admin staff in the NHS, she has no patient contact and no real contact with medical staff, beyond half an hour a week.

She’s just got a free flu jab! AIBU to think this is disgusting? It must cost the NHS so much, admin staff should have to pay. I agree that frontline staff should get it for free to protect the vulnerable but admin staff shouldn’t.

I'd be interested in seeing statistics of Flu vaccinated NHS staff now since pre Pandemic. If the NHS are paying for it they'll be statistics.

canklesmctacotits · 13/10/2026 22:16

Of all the things to begrudge your SIL for, a vaccine 😂😂

That’s different, teachers are essential.

Is the school admin who takes calls from sick staff, makes the calls for supply staff and manages timetable changes essential?

Good luck if your planned surgery has nobody available to manage theatre schedules.

Most large companies fund or subsidise flu jabs to encourage staff to get them to reduce risk of sick time in Winter. They do it because it is cost effective and saves money overall.

I think if you are self employed its tax deductible for the same reason - or used to be.

RampantIvy · 13/10/2026 22:25

Well, this isn't going the way the OP wanted to, is it?

Twoweeksinaugust · 13/10/2026 17:11

So you know how much it costs to have people off sick?
I think more employers should offer it for free.

Absolutely this!

Besidemyselfwithworry · 13/10/2026 21:25

I work for the nhs in an admin role and yes they offer ALL staff the flu jab for free.
This isn’t just to protect staff who are patient facing it is to minimise disruption to services over the winter months with people going off sick.
Hospitals cannot run without admin staff and this @thisisjustridiculous is a really short sighted view for a vital public service.

We also get full sick pay which costs the NHS more than a £15 jab - think about it

Yes it’s costing tax payers 4.6 billion a year. Think about that.

They are available online. Ukhsa publishes weekly flu reports alongside end of winter statistics so you should be able to find out

I think the rate of vaccinating is declining but all vaccinations are sadly

Perplexed20 · 13/10/2026 22:32

You asked if you were being unreasonable. The resounding answer is yes. If you just wanted people to agree with you, why did you ask?

But where's the evidence? Who is making money from this? If £15 is subsided rate, how much is it costing?

Vegetablespringrolls · 13/10/2026 22:34

Yabvu. It costs a lot more to pay for someone's sick leave than to pay for the flu jab. It makes financial sense.

LoyalGoldMentor · 13/10/2026 22:35

Financial sense?

Onbdy · 13/10/2026 22:35

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 17:11

That’s why they should have to pay for it.

Then you’d be outraged to know that my GP surgery gave me one for free just because I asked when I was in!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/10/2026 22:38

This is a ludicrous stance!

Of course it’s in the NHS interests, and therefore everyone’s, for the staff to get flu jabs. It’ll cost them much less than them going off with flu.

Lots of employees, private and public sector, pay for flu jabs for their staff, or reimburse them for getting them. Because it makes sense.

And you can’t force people to pay out of their own pocket.

Some people just begrudge NHS or any publicly paid staff ANYTHING - even if it’s in fact a saving. People literally hate the people who work for their good.

Wincher · 13/10/2026 22:41

My work gives out flu jab vouchers, I’m having mine on Thursday! Don’t worry though, not public sector

Snookercucumbers · 13/10/2026 22:41

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 17:11

That’s why they should have to pay for it.

But OP that doesn't even make sense. The employers should pay for it to save their staff being off sick. Plus can you imagine how many appointments might get delayed or not even filled without the admin staff to arrange them?
Most are based in hospitals and come into contact with viruses just walking through the hospital, touching door handles, using toilets etc.

I saw statistics today that said the jab impact of ppl being off sick amounted to minutes per person on a post about this very issue.

HesterLeggatt · 13/10/2026 22:43

This is so delusional it’s actually funny. We get it, OP - you hate your SIL. 🙄

LoyalGoldMentor · 13/10/2026 22:43

So, what about those that are vaccinated and then go off sick because they've got flu like symptoms post jab?

AlinaRawlings · 13/10/2026 22:43

randomchap · 13/10/2026 17:12

The NHS would struggle with admin staff going off sick with flu.

Obviously

You ppl genuinely need to look into the statistics on how much time the jab saves ppl from being off sick, it’s barely anything.

Ladamesansmerci · 13/10/2026 22:49

What a weird hill to die on.

Even if admin aren't patient facing, they are likely coming into contact with lots of staff who are. It literally helps to break the chain of transmission.

This happened to people I worked with. Got told it would be unpaid leave because side effects from jabs "don't count".
My manager was an utter cunt.

Surprised at this. Where I work one year most of my team ended up off sick for a good week or 2 (some with more complications) with flu. We’ve all gotten the vaccine since. It’s nasty when it strikes.

Hummingbird233 · 13/10/2026 22:54

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 18:28

NHS admin is half the reason it’s impossible to access care!

You need to inform yourself OP, you’re coming across as ignorant.

You've done your own research have you? Watched a few tiktoks, seen some Facebook reels?
