This Morning - Tone Deaf on Heating

This Morning had a segment on heating and Ben and Cat were having a jolly old time giggling and laughing about the fact that they had ‘caved’ and turned their heating on.

Ben and Cat are extremely well-off, multi-millionaires in fact. Turning on the heating for them has no consequences. I’d have turned mine on if I was rich. But, like most people in the country I am not and so I will be cold a lot of this winter.

It really got my back up that were laughing about something that for most of us is a serious issues.

Oh god, how miserable are you wanting morning tv to be? Should everything be prefaced with a full disclosure and a side salad of self flagellation to coddle the sensitive?

I think you are being oversensitive.

Tone deaf, perhaps, but I highly doubt either of those two are multi millionaires OP!

According to Google, Cat is worth 11 to 13 million pounds and Ben (a paltry) 3 to 4 million pounds.

They earn £600k per year for 'entertaining' you on Good Morning!

But that’s my point. Everyone knows is keeping warm is a serious issue for much of the UK at the moment. So why precede the segment with two millionaires giggling about ‘caving in’ when caving in means nothing to them.

Whilst it is a serious issue for some and heating costs have gone up for everyone, I think you’re exaggerating a bit when you say most people. For most people it is really wanting to push back turning the heating on to save costs but not the end of the world if you do have to turn it on earlier. I completely relate to their comments as that does usually happen to me, and most people I know too as it’s always a topic of conversation at work with everyone doing the same. Yes unfortunately there are some people who literally won’t be able to afford their heating but that’s the same with everything, the rest of us can have normal conversations and light jokes around this.

It's the same old problem. Politicians, celebrities, company directors, and those who have the most to say about this kind of thing are often extremely rich, and as such, are unaffected by the problem themselves.

Like the stars who fly to climate change conferences in their private jets, throwing pure hypocrisy into the mix.

This is one reason of many why I don't watch television any more at all.

I do see your point but for some people this year is very different to last. And it’s no joke though I appreciate different things affect different people and humour is often dark!

If you use oil as fuel - many places do not have access to gas - then according to Boilerjuice, in October 2025 the price per litre was 51.63p per litre and today it states 112.34. so coupled with the fact that you don’t know the price day to day, there are no caps, and you have to buy a minimum of 500 litrs, it really is worrying for more people than before. And if you’re in cold areas of the uk you are likely filling up several times over the winter and early spring months. It’s a wild volatile market with no real consumer protections but I was pleased it being discussed in the news etc earlier this week.

It’s not any more tone deaf than most of MN assuming everywhere in the UK has had heatwaves or that some of us have to have the heating all year round cause it’s fecking freezing.

fando · 14/10/2026 13:38

Thing is they are millionaires regardless of whether they put the heating on or not, they aren’t relatable to the average viewer.

9.1m pensioners (75% of those over 66) report their homes being colder than they would like.

Almost 9m households are living in heat poverty.

My parents would fall in that category but they are millionaires, just don’t like “wasting” money on heating!
