This Morning - Tone Deaf on Heating

This Morning had a segment on heating and Ben and Cat were having a jolly old time giggling and laughing about the fact that they had ‘caved’ and turned their heating on.

Ben and Cat are extremely well-off, multi-millionaires in fact. Turning on the heating for them has no consequences. I’d have turned mine on if I was rich. But, like most people in the country I am not and so I will be cold a lot of this winter.

It really got my back up that were laughing about something that for most of us is a serious issues.

Another example of overreaction on MN. Honestly, this place is attracting the sanctimonious

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 13/10/2026 13:33

It left me feeling cold.

JMSA · 13/10/2026 13:34

I couldn’t be this ridiculous level of offended.
And I’m not rich.

MidnightPatrol · 13/10/2026 13:35

I think it’s tone deaf to admit to watching the TV, when some people can’t afford their electricity bills

Why comment on it so confidently if you don’t even no the programme? That’s a bit odd. This sort of chat and having a laugh is totally normal for this morning, they discuss current topics but it’s not a news show

To show how superior she is! No daytime tv and shoehorn in that you listen to radio four!

IronEverything · 13/10/2026 13:36

God I'm sick of this pandering, "trigger warning" society.
Putting your heating on is a normal thing to talk about this time of year. They weren't talking about lighting the aga in their second property by the sea.

nam3c4ang3 · 13/10/2026 13:37

FFS unclench OP - dont be so silly. People these days are looking for anything to be offended by!!

Ishehe · 13/10/2026 13:37

Normal conversation to have and not tone deaf - what is the problem is the cost of living and fuel prices driving people to poverty where they aren’t able to afford this.

Mossyfox · 13/10/2026 13:39

I think it is tone deaf. Lots of folk can't afford to switch their heating on or need to keep it low to save money. Some posters are probably a bit tone deaf too.

I was under the impression morning programmes like this one were supposed to be news orientated and informative. I don't watch daytime tv unless it's tennis.
I'm a radio person myself and listen to that on a morning though to be honest the presenters on the Today programme make me reach for the off switch quite often.

That shows you haven't watched it! They can have serious topics but it is also an entertainment show

Brindlekindle · 13/10/2026 13:44

You're angry at the wrong people.

TheLastSilverSaint · 13/10/2026 13:46

So TV programmes that mention basics that not everyone can easily afford are ‘tone deaf’?

Are the cooking segments ‘tone deaf’ because some people have to use food banks? Or the fashion segments because not everyone can afford a pair of high street jeans?

What about your friends and colleagues? Are they allowed to mention heating? What about cars? Or holidays?

What topics are people allowed to talk about, exactly?

No, its supposed to be like a trashy magazine. Take a break type thing.

Tone deaf - not everyone can afford to buy magazines, even the trashy ones 🤣🙈

LoveWine123 · 13/10/2026 13:59

Some people wake up looking for things to be offended by...

Topseyt123 · 13/10/2026 14:01

What utter nonsense.

I'm a recent widow and definitely not a multi millionaire. I'll never be particularly wealthy but I don't find it tone deaf at all. It's light-hearted conversation on daytime TV. That's all, unless you are searching for something to take offence at.

Heating on or not is a personal choice. Influenced by personal comfort levels, geographical location and temperature and yes, cost.

Mine hadn't come on since early May until just this last week a couple of times for an hour or so in the mornings. We've been very lucky here in the Essex with the weather and continued above average temperatures so it is quite late this year. I was even still in shorts and a t-shirt at the beginning of October, though not now.

Flee2thebigbeach · 13/10/2026 14:03

I’m in Scotland where it’s been cold enough all summer to have needed to keep the heating on for a quick heat up so never really been fully off. Now scrimping use with the price of oil. I don’t watch this morning but yeah I’d have questioned their chatter when they likely can put it on for as much or little as they wish when so many can’t. Not being able to afford heating is a very particular hardship unlike, say, the comparison with cookery programmes where there are usually budget alternatives for those who can’t afford the type of food used on those shows.

LowlandLucky · 13/10/2026 14:07

Bloody hell, i think you need to turn the tv off, disconect the internet and avoid conversations with other humans.

Heat the person, not the room. No need to be cold if you layer up!

iloveanearlynight · 13/10/2026 14:13

Utterly ridiculous to put the heating on. It's not even below 15 degrees fgs, especially where they live. I agree it's tone deaf.

alcovecupboards · 13/10/2026 14:14

It's not tone deaf. Most people do not struggle to heat their homes and the idea that a throw away remark about the colder weather is somehow tone deaf because some people can't afford heating is a nonsense. I'm so sick of this race to the bottom purity spiral in where everyone must change their behaviour and actions lest it upset someone who can't afford a very standard normal thing to do.

HedgerowD · 13/10/2026 14:15

Wasn't there a long running "is your heating on yet?" on MN?

BillieWiper · 13/10/2026 14:20

Presumably if they were poor and working class and complaining about the fact they lived in a council flat which had very poor insulation you'd say that was unfair on people who don't have council houses?

Or that council tenants shouldn't be allowed to be TV presenters because there salaries are too high?

Would you find it convincing if they pretended that they couldn't afford to put their heating on yet?

BeurialJimberley · 13/10/2026 14:30

WearingBeautifulShoes · 13/10/2026 13:23

Pretty much all the responses here are from people who didn't see the segment. As a clearly common and unintelligent person who (shock, horror) doesn't listen to Radio 4, I did and literally the whole point was to give ideas on saving money on heating. The "giggling" bit lasted all of 10 seconds.

But that’s my point. Everyone knows is keeping warm is a serious issue for much of the UK at the moment. So why precede the segment with two millionaires giggling about ‘caving in’ when caving in means nothing to them.

I take it Ben and Cat didn’t turn to the camera and say “Stick your heating on you tight bastards”?

If not it’s all good.

People are allowed to have more money than you OP.
