This Morning - Tone Deaf on Heating

This Morning had a segment on heating and Ben and Cat were having a jolly old time giggling and laughing about the fact that they had ‘caved’ and turned their heating on.

Ben and Cat are extremely well-off, multi-millionaires in fact. Turning on the heating for them has no consequences. I’d have turned mine on if I was rich. But, like most people in the country I am not and so I will be cold a lot of this winter.

It really got my back up that were laughing about something that for most of us is a serious issues.

Tone deaf, perhaps, but I highly doubt either of those two are multi millionaires OP!

Cat Deeley is worth over £10m

Surely it would have been far worse, if they had said 'oh goodness can't possibly afford to put the heating on yet.'

Knowing full well that they could!

PoppieCock · 13/10/2026 14:31

I take it Ben and Cat didn’t turn to the camera and say “Stick your heating on you tight bastards”?

If not it’s all good.

People are allowed to have more money than you OP.

It was a segment about people not having the money to heat and how to save money.

It would be like fronting a segment about food banks by giggling about ordering an expensive takeaway

Yes. The tone should have been ‘I’ve had my heating on but I know others are not as fortunate’

I put the heating on for a half an hour during the week. I am far from rich my last electricity bill was huge. I’m still feeling the effects. I have already told the children that it’ll be a quiet Christmas as I’ll have another whopping bill in November.

Oh dont be daft 🙄

And people watching that segment won’t all be struggling to pay their bills.

Are they allowed to discuss holidays or are you likely to moan that some viewers can’t afford those either?

That’s different as they were discussing heat poverty. It is a crime.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 13/10/2026 14:41

Don't watch daytime TV. It is bad for your soul.

As the old program used to say.

Just switch off your television set and go and do something less boring instead.

Wise words.

parakeet · 13/10/2026 14:44

YABVVU.
By your logic, we should have no humorous programmes on TV in case they mention a product that not everyone can afford.

Holidays aren’t a necessity for staying alive

Can't go through life thinking like that OP, I mean lets ban talk of hand cream because there are double amputees out there who just dream of moisturising their hands. Lets cancel the book review because there are poeple that are blind and/or cannot read. And speaking of tone deaf, lets shut off the radio stations too.

Why comment on it so confidently if you don’t even no the programme? That’s a bit odd. This sort of chat and having a laugh is totally normal for this morning, they discuss current topics but it’s not a news show

I talk about it confidently because I confidently believe highly paid people joking about an issue which is a matter of such importance to other people is categorically wrong.

It is 17c outside! Yeah, okay, if they were boasting about strutting around in swimwear in their hot homes while the country were in the depths of winter and in peak burst-pipemaggedon, fair enough. But your determination to be outraged over a morning show is ridiculous.

Forkbangles · 13/10/2026 15:13

I disagree with this: I’d have turned mine on if I was rich. But, like most people in the country I am not and so I will be cold a lot of this winter.

I don't think 'most' people are not able to afford to turn on the heating. It might be a growing portion of the population, but I don't think most.

Bloody miserable if you are in the minority.

Flee2thebigbeach · 13/10/2026 15:23

I agree @Usernamesalltakenblues

The five essentials of survival are air, water, food, shelter (eg warmth), sleep. So yes, millionaire presenters joking about heating is not on a par with joking about hand creams or holidays of some of the other non essentials of survival.

I think OP has a very good point.
People laughing and joking about turning on their heating has the effect of making people for whom this is a real issue and a real dilemma feel unseen and unimportant. It makes them feel as though there is something wrong with them that they have this problem rather than there being something wrong with society and the system that they are in this position.
This is how politicians control people: is olating them and making them feel as though it is their own fault.
Those presenters should be ashamed of themselves playing this game but I doubt they are.

But then it’s also tone deaf to discuss buying anything non essential(segments on clothes/ Xmas presents et ), travelling on holiday, beauty treatments, plants to buy for the garden etc etc

Mansionscoldandgrey · 13/10/2026 15:37

Someone has just driven past my house. I think they're a selfish, showy-offy, gloating wanker given the price of diesel nowadays 😪

Boreded · 13/10/2026 15:39

2dogsandabudgie · 13/10/2026 13:12

I've turned mine on and I'm not rich so no I don't think it was tone deaf. If you're going down this road where would you draw the line?

To be fair given that the average 3 bed semi costs 50p an hour to heat when warm, that line is going to be at the ground.

An hour or two a couple of times a day is not break the bank money. I know some people live right on the bread line and it is tough, but is it really so tough that we can’t put the heating on for a couple of hours to take the chill off. And if it is, then OP should probably start by not using electricity when she doesn’t need it so wouldn’t be watching tv or her phone (to save charge).

We better ban cooking and baking shows then. Very vital but not everyone can afford to buy the ingredients.

Female123456 · 13/10/2026 13:06

Sadly some presenters get paid far too much for very little talent, & delude themselves into thinking they're above the rest of the general public.

^^exactly this

And some delude themselves thinking the business they want to order from should simply send it for free, and being returned for free (some after wearing the clothes they ordered so they become landfill).

Entitled.
