£10 for 30 miles??

I’ve just put a tenner (bang on a tenner) worth of unleaded fuel into a 1.5l car. It was reading 55 miles left as I did it - after £10 of fuel it rose to 86miles.

does this sound like the petrol station is stealing - or is that really how many miles a tenner of fuel gets? I don’t have that setting visible on my cars dashboard.

WIBU to go back to them or report them or something?

How many miles left is not that accurate. You should have a tank fill indicator and be looking at that.

PickAChew · Today 00:15

A lot of fuel gauges disregard a small portion of what's in the tank as it's needed to keep everything running smoothly.

Yogafiend · Today 00:17

Agree with previous posters how many miles is left is not accurate at all! I often drive on 0 miles left from my kids school home which is about 3.5 miles and then my husband drives it to the petrol station he likes which is about 3 miles. 😂. So wouldn’t go by that

DesperateforSunshine · Today 00:17

With respect you’re talking nonsense. The ‘miles left’ is all down to how you drive and no 1.5l is going to be the same as another 1.5l. It will be accurate as will be the £10 dispensed - if you have an issue you need to speak to Weights and Measures - which may be dealt with by the council. My Mercedes GLS would gobble £10 with 6miles and that is it I was careful.

It was the miles on the clock as I pulled onto the station. When I turned it back on it had barely risen. I know these things are not 💯- my question is ‘is it feasible on a not 4l tank of a car’ that a tenner buys so few miles.

Depends on the car and the price of the petrol. At £8 per gallon and a car that does 50mpg, you are looking at about 60 miles.

We need more info.

A 1.5l SUV type (small one) maybe 5 years old? Honda? Can you tell it’s not mine!? The petrol was 1.79 so about 5 to 6 litres dispensed allegedly ?

It sounds about right to me.

Fuel gauges and miles remaining counters are not accurate. If you want to check real mpg you need to fill tank to one click. Note miles or set trip to zero. Drive until near empty. Fill take again to one click. Convert the amount of fuel needed in ltrs to uk gallons. Then divide the distance covered by the gallons used.

The number you get will vary according to where you have been. Mixed local driving my last car got around 43mpg. A roads at 50-60mph up to 54mpg. Motorways around 47,48mpg.

The only thing miles remains is good for is warning that you need fuel soon.

If you put in £10 fuel that is well over a gallon even at current prices so any average car will be good for at least 30 or 40 miles, probably more.

That's a thirsty little Honda........or they are fucking you.

Although the Government are fucking you harder. £5 of that went straight to them.

I think I’m going to report it - just wanted to check if I was way off - I don’t think I am.

Don't bother.

Your car's "miles left" counter isn't a reliable or official measuring device in any way and it's results are influenced by many variables including being very slightly uphill or downhill.

You are if you think the miles remaining is any accurate measure of the fuel you put in.

Delphiniumandlupins · Today 01:43

The miles remaining counter isn't accurate enough over such small amounts for you to make a complaint.

Peakyblinder18 · Today 02:16

You could probably run the tank down to zero and get a few miles.
Not helpful I know.

StuNur85 · Today 02:21

I stuck 30 in mine today and got 108 miles. It's due to the rise in price of fuel.

AutumnLoverButNotYet · Today 02:24

It would be utterly pointless reporting it.

I had to use a rental car recently (because some utter jerk reversed into mine) & I was astounded at how much it cost to top it back up to full when I had only done 250 miles. Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly how much it cost. It was a Vauxhall Frontera, nice enough Car, but have to pay to run it all the time. And I get shit mileage in my Ford focus.

ItsOnlyHobnobs · Today 02:25

The measure you are using as evidence is not accurate.

I often fill my car up and the mileage remaining on the dial will have increased between a journey of 15/20 miles from the last reading it gave before I switched off the engine.

I take it that you not knowing this particular car, and you putting only a tenner in, that you are not a regular driver of a vehicle? It can be a nasty shock if it’s unfamiliar.

SpreadsheetLife · Today 03:40

£10 of fuel will barely register on a fuel gauge. We put £10 in our hire courtesy car the other day and the range increased by a only 7 miles! The garage is not ripping you off - they would be out of business within weeks.
