Mean Girls isn't for kids

Ljcrow · Today 15:43

Went to see Mean Girls the musical recently, it was good fun but I was shocked by the amount of children there, many of whom looked as young as 7-8 years old, some potentially younger.
The musical includes references to sex, virginity, fingering, wide set vaginas and more. Plus plenty of swearing. Then there's all the talk of dieting and body image that, as adults, we can understand the subtleties of and appreciate the satire, but a child is much less likely to.
I've a 9 year old and there's absolutely no chance I'd take her. Why rush childhood?
Do parents not research these things or do they just not care?
Also, why isn't there an age rating for musicals as for films?
I'm 100% anticipating people responding to this with something about pearl clutching, minding my own business etc. I just think it's a shame we seem to want kids to grow up so fast these days. 🤷‍♀️

Of course they won't "disintegrate" but that doesn't mean it's okay. Why not let the innocence of childhood last a little longer? And me noticing lots of kids in the interval/at the end and being surprised by it, isn't me doing a head count now, is it?
Hey, if you think me saying it's unsuitable to take an under 10 to something that talks about losing your virginity to a tampon because you've got a wide set vagina and all the previously mentioned adult content makes me the "morality police" then so be it. You win second cool mom award of the thread!

You literally called me the “second cool mom of the thread,” but lol, okay. Look, nobody said you have to take your kid to Mean Girls. Don’t take her again. that’s completely fine. The problem though, is that you did take her without looking into it, regretted it afterward, and then decided the real issue was other parents who may have actually known what they were walking into. I know all about what shows I’m taking my kid to, and if I don’t I look it up first. That’s the difference. “I didn’t bother checking beforehand and now I’m upset” is not the moral high ground. It’s just poor planning. There’s a big difference between “this wasn’t right for my kid” and “do other parents not research or do they just not care?” One is a personal parenting choice, the other is you judging everyone else’s parenting because you didn’t do your homework first.

Erm, I didn't take my child thanks. Maybe take the time to read the opening post properly. Might help your argument.
For what it's worth my daughter, who's 9, has asked to watch the film version of Mean Girls before. I did my research and said no, wait til you're a bit older.

Shows do have age guidance, but it’s not enforced like it is for films at the cinema. They usually tell you the reason for that age too I.e bad language etc. Personally I find it’s a pretty good indicator for DS (although now he’s 14 there’s been a couple of things we were both cringing at watching together).
For autistic DD I actually tend to wait a year or two longer as she’s a very sensitive soul. I can imagine some parents have naturally mature children (especially if they have older siblings) who would be fine to watch it younger.

Right, so you started a thread to bitch about what other parents allow their children to do? Because ya, that's so much better. 😂 And lol, sorry, but your original post wasn't important enough for me to remember every detail hours later. What I find particularly hilarious though, is that you went out of your way to make an entire thred complaining about other people's parenting decisions when the situation has fuck all to do with you or your child. Like, congratulations on deciding your daughter isn't ready to watch Mean Girls, but why exactly do you think anyone else needs to follow your parenting standards? You made the decision you felt was appropriate for your kid and other parents are perfectly capable of doing the same. The difference is that they're not running to the internet to congratulate themselves for it while looking down on everyone who makes a different choice.

what is a “regular mom” 😕

I wouldn’t sit there judging no. I wouldn’t take that age but mainly because I’d think that a 7 year old might get a bit bored after 2.5 hours of it

Have you ever watched mean girls?

DrMadelineMaxwell · Today 19:31

We saw Beetlejuice in London in the summer. There were a lot of children in the audience and it was wildly inappropriate in terms of content and bad language.

Don't be ridiculous. Someone can have a differing opinion to you and have friends you know.
Very Mean Girls coded of you though so congrats for really going with the theme.

You sound very wound up. Just read a thread properly if you're going to take the time to respond, several times. It's not difficult.

Shows do have an age rating. But they don't enforce it like they do at a cinema but they strongly suggest it

Lol, I genuinely don't know why you think you're embarrassing me by pointing out that I didn't remember every detail of your ridiculous post several hours later. 😂 Sorry, but your opinions aren't nearly important enough for me to spend the rest of my day thinking about them. If anyone should be embarrassed, it's you for starting an entire thread bitching about the parenting decisions of complete strangers whose lives have absolutely fuck all to do with you. Imagine being so bothered by other people taking their children to a musical that you feel compelled to run to the internet and complain about it. And frankly, if you have such a problem with families enjoying theatre together, perhaps don't bother going again. The theatre doesn't need judgmental bitches like you acting as though they get to decide who belongs there and who doesn't.

Well I'd say one of two things going on:

  1. I saw Mean Girls when I was young and it was great! Its set in a school and I'm sure DC would like it. Gets there and quite quickly thinking 'Oh shit! I made a mistake!'
  2. I reckon the DC will like Mean Girls and I'm sure a lot of the references will go over their head

I mean I remember watching Grease as a kid and thinking it was great, singing along etc. Then I saw it again when I was older and was shocked at all the stuff I'd missed/not understood.

GreenFootstool · Today 19:42

I saw the Stranger Things stage show recent and was absolutely appalled at how many kids under 12 were there. It is absolutely not a suitable TV show for kids of that age, let along to be bringing them to the stage show which suggests they've seen the whole thing.

I was given tickets for Billy elliot and took 6&8 yr old. I had to cover their ears!

Agree a rating might be useful.

My brain changed this to Billy Idol and I thought, "Well, what did you expect?!"

I'd be really concerned about glamourising bullying and girl being awful to each other more than the language or inferences. I know that's not the message of the film (or show, I guess) but I think it would go over the heads of kids under the age of 12 or 13 and the takeaway would be how to ve a bitch and dominate people.

I don't wax or shave my child's hair. If you're referring to a post several months ago where I asked opinions on my daughter asking to remove her own hair, you're only proving yet again that you can't read properly or that you lack basic comprehension skills. And also that you're so wound up and care so much about me that you've gone back and dug through my previous postings on here. Which is verging on unhinged.
You probably should go watch TV now, you're starting to come across as a stalker.
