To dislike Birmingham?

I’ve worked in the city maybe 4 years now .. there really isn’t much appealing about it. I once overheard a woman on the train say she does guided tours for Manc, London and Birmingham - and Bham is a hard sell.

I’ve been coming into New Street station for years and there’s always been construction and it’s never seemed to progressed to anything.

I walk down New Street and actually feel unsafe. It’s depressing and dreary .. and it should be so much more

I come from Norfolk, I find it easier to get around in London that I do in Birmingham. At first I found myself on a main road but going the wrong way. Didn't happen in London or other big cities.

I go to the Chmarkets and to catch a train to Stratford upon Avon etc. There always seems to be a fight in the Macdonalds. It's got places worth visiting, but there seems to be more fights, that escalate fast, than I've experienced in other cities. I wouldn't do the markets again at night.

What’s a Chmarket?

I visited Liverpool for the first time recently. Massively more attractive than Birmingham. I really enjoyed it.

Central London you go for a walk it feels so clean (mostly) and well done and built up and sometimes just beautiful.

Central Birmingham doesn't give me this feeling.

Must admit I quite like Liverpool. Doesn’t have that grim feeling that’s common in London or Birmingham.

Move and get a job somewhere else then.

Exactly what I did - I agree with the OP. I found it to be an entirely depressing and dour city. Manchester and London far better.

The Royal Orthopaedic is good.

Christmas market

I went to university there 40 years ago and didn’t like it much then.
I’ve been back a few times but I still can’t gel with the place.
It’s the only city that I’ve visited that gives me a feeling of doom. Yes it’s had a lot of redevelopment and the canals are no longer filled with rubbish but I just can’t warm to the place.

But what’s the point in even saying it.

I agree though, can’t think of much worse than a dense Yorkshire accent.

Cause it’s a forum… people can comment.

Look, you’re clearly offended. Dont take the internet too seriously. There’s much more important things to be offended about than a stranger saying the brunmie accent is diabolical.

I‘m not offended. I don’t live near Birmingham, nor do I have a Birmingham accent but I think describing someone else’s accent as diabolical is a bit weird.

PrettyLittleRose · Yesterday 22:41

FWIW, I quite like the South Yorkshire accent. Grin

I don't mind the Brummie one either though! 😀

Well every day is a school day.

First time I have ever heard that too. Christmas Market shortened to ChMarket!

Im just back a work trip from here and im traumatised. Two frightening incidents in addition to random groups of men staring. I have travelled extensively worldwide. I am not normally dramatic and im really shaken up.

But you've slated other accents?

Never called one diabolical.

Said there were worse.

Okay…

I still think the brummie accent is diabolical.

I have spent one evening/night in Birmingham. I was in my 40s.

Had a great evening at an event, which was immediately followed by being harassed by three men in a car when I was on the short walk back to my air BNB. Literally a less than ten minute walk.

It was very fortunate for me that there was roadworks, and they had no option but to go right when I was going straight ahead - and at that point I was just two minutes from where I was staying.

Strangely I've never been tempted to go back.

ProudCat · Yesterday 22:50

I'm a Brummie. Lived there for the first 25 years of my life. And then left because, frankly, the quality of life compared to other places was dire.

But I do miss some things, mostly the food (hard dough bread, baltis, proper mixed grills, pork baps, etc.) and the people. Brummies can come across as harsh or sarky, but not generally bullshitty, and they like a good laugh.

I don't miss the violence, stabbings or weapons on the street. Where it's rough, it's really rough.

Oh, and the reason the city centre looks like that is because it was bombed to shit in WW2.

Hmm, yeah I have Googled, and nothing comes up.

Don't want to go into too much detail as im a bit mentally battered by it but men I didnt know.

Like Birmingham city centre is really a dump. Central London is just amazing so nice and fills me with joy
