To dislike Birmingham?

I’ve worked in the city maybe 4 years now .. there really isn’t much appealing about it. I once overheard a woman on the train say she does guided tours for Manc, London and Birmingham - and Bham is a hard sell.

I’ve been coming into New Street station for years and there’s always been construction and it’s never seemed to progressed to anything.

I walk down New Street and actually feel unsafe. It’s depressing and dreary .. and it should be so much more

Isn’t it going to be an IKEA?

Also that aside I went to Gail’s once to grab a coffee on lunch. Then found out it had a one star rating. Lovely.

Only Memory I have of Birmingham before I vowed never to step foot in there ever again was a work trip in 2010, was fucking terrified and got bitten to shit by bed bugs in the hotel. Everyone was rude and the place was a total shit hole. Nothing to do with being working class, plenty of working class cities I love such as Newcastle

Duncantoldme2 · Yesterday 21:14

Didn't like it at all. Better when the bull ring got revamped, the mailbox and the canal area, but that was 30 (?) yrs ago now, and it was still dodgy. Has it reverted to the big shithole it was?

Baccus bar - best bit. Still there??

Pack your job in then Bab and let one of us ‘rough bunch of people’ have it then.

I don’t think they could handle it. That’s why I was employed over those who applied.

Worst train station layout ever

I don’t live there 😂

So what's the issue?

Clearly not as others have agreed.

Agreed that your aforementioned CBD locations are representative of the entirety of the city? Odd.

I’ve only been a couple of times and didn’t like the vibe. Lots of young men in groups dressed in black wearing hoodies. I didn’t feel safe.

Having said that I’ve got a couple of amazing brummie friends. They are the warmest people, down to earth and the salt of the earth. I also don’t know the great parts of Birmingham (yet).

Lifelover16 · Yesterday 21:17

i used to live here 40 years ago, and had a fantastic time as a student. I never felt unsafe.
However I agree with OP it’s gone totally downhill and is unsafe and dirty. There are some totally no go areas where even the police don’t venture.

The one thing I’ll always love though is Villa Park and Aston Villa Football Club.

We dont want you here Bab

😂 it's such a shithole. What's that saying about, it's the people that make the place...?

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · Yesterday 21:19

I lived in one of the browner areas of Birmingham for 15 years and loved it there

We've moved to be closer to family but I really really miss the food

Every time we come back we go for a mixed grill somewhere

Not been a fan of the city centre for a long time. The redevelopment has enshittified a lot of it and we've lost a lot that makes it unique i think.

If you head to the more interesting places outside of town there's a lot to recommend.

Peakypolly · Yesterday 21:19

I think Opheem is one of the best restaurants in the UK, Adam's and The Wilderness not far behind.
I'm very entertained by the theatre/music/arts scene in the city.
When the Commonwealth Games were hosted in Birmingham everyone agreed it was a huge success- hopefully Invictus will be the same.
Genuine Brummies are some of the funniest and kindest people I've come across.
Some areas are run down, show me a city where that isn't the case.
It shouldn't make a difference, but I know the Mumsnet love for my home city Bath. I don't live in Birmingham but would prefer to live there than go back to Bath - rugby teams aside.

Wow, there's no need for that. Hmm Brummies are lovely friendly people. I agree with a pp, it's a YOU problem. Not a Brum problem.

Okbyethen · Yesterday 21:24

I'm not from Birmingham but am in the Midlands and visit fairly regularly.

I like it, never had any problems there! The shops are good, and the nightlife is fun!

Raspberryripple11 · Yesterday 21:27

My friend went to uni there and witnessed three stabbings in her first term.

stripesandspotsanddots · Yesterday 21:28

Whenever I go to Birmingham I really appreciate how friendly people are and how diverse the city is. It's also got great housing stock. I'd happily move there.

MickyFinnegan · Yesterday 21:31

I think it's alright to dislike Birmingham. It is a bit shit. Not sure Brummies are particularly nice (not particular nasty). I guess you've got to pick your poison; I couldn't deal with hippies in Bristol, or yummy mummies in the home counties, for example - or driving ages to get to shop, not having plenty of job opportunities, clubs for the kids, good curry on my doorstep...I'd say its not a good city for visiting just for the sake of it. It doesn't have a great deal of charm. And I don't like the city centre particularly although I don't find it scary like some people - Mumsnet does tend to get scared easily by things like people in hoodies.

"the entire city is full of rude people" oh dear you lost me there! That's just a silly thing to say.

ilovesooty · Yesterday 21:36

AndyouWILLATONE · Yesterday 20:56

It's the worst. I will never step foot there.

How do you know if you've never been there?

Summed it up nicely.

I will say though it statistically does have a higher than average crime rate. So it’s not just people scared of boys in hoodies.
