To dislike Birmingham?

I’ve worked in the city maybe 4 years now .. there really isn’t much appealing about it. I once overheard a woman on the train say she does guided tours for Manc, London and Birmingham - and Bham is a hard sell.

I’ve been coming into New Street station for years and there’s always been construction and it’s never seemed to progressed to anything.

I walk down New Street and actually feel unsafe. It’s depressing and dreary .. and it should be so much more

It's the worst. I will never step foot there.

Jsky67 · Yesterday 20:57

Utter shithole

Dexternight · Yesterday 20:57

Move and get a job somewhere else then.

newlycorporategirl · Yesterday 21:00

You can feel unsafe in any major city globally given the volume of people.
Birmingham has so much to offer - brilliant museums, theatres dotted around the city etc.
Ozzy Osbourne exhibition last time I was there was world class and free.

People hate on Birmingham because it's a working class city with a high proportion of non white people. If you venture outside your bubble you'll find incredible food, culture, arts and more. I'm from there but live in London. I'm sure you can find somewhere else to work.

I lived in Birmingham about 22 years ago. It was nice then, the new Bullring all gone up and the canal area all trendy.
Sounds like it’s taken a bit of a dive!

HangryBrickShark · Yesterday 21:01

Yeah the job next to the Odeon is at least four years old and has been a nightmare from start to finish.

PrettyLittleRose · Yesterday 21:01

I like it. Blush I don't live there, but I enjoy a visit once every 2-3 months.

Again I don’t live there and never will.

if it’s so great why did you move to London?

There are some nice bits - the Barber Institute, the cathedral and jewellery quarter, Symphony Hall, the canals. And actually quite a lot of good bars and restaurants. But none of it is obvious - you have to get to know the city, plus it is very confusing to get around with massive lanes of traffic.

Try Slough...

Have you ever ventured outside of new Street? Utterly bizarre to judge the whole city on New Street and very narrow minded.

I love both cities - it is allowed!

I like b'ham people. I'd much rather go there than london.

Also, people think you live there because you wrote the post as if you actually have an in depth knowledge of the city.

They announced today Harvey Nichols is closing down in Brum too

AuroraBloom · Yesterday 21:07

I like shopping in Birmingham. I don't feel unsafe.

morbidd · Yesterday 21:07

Have you been outside of new street? If not, then I’m not sure you’re in a position to say anything. Yes, there’s construction but different improvements are being made. Also, I find the hate against Brum to be steeped in classism and racism.

Yes. I worked on Colmore Row. Worked on the new Paradise Estate (think that’s its name), been to numerous events at the library. Had a friend who lived there so I would stay over and we’d go to bars and have lunch around the canal. She lived about a 15/20 minutes walk from the centre so we would walk.

I gave New Street as an example dear. It’s a Main Street so you shouldn’t feel intimated to walk down it.

Isn’t it going to be an IKEA?

Also that aside I went to Gail’s once to grab a coffee on lunch. Then found out it had a one star rating. Lovely.

Fucking shithole! I’m sure there are areas that aren’t too bad but I just don’t like the place. Slightly judgy of me but I hate the accent too. I know three people from Birmingham, two are absolute cunts so that doesn’t give me a good vibe either.
