To dislike Birmingham?

I’ve worked in the city maybe 4 years now .. there really isn’t much appealing about it. I once overheard a woman on the train say she does guided tours for Manc, London and Birmingham - and Bham is a hard sell.

I’ve been coming into New Street station for years and there’s always been construction and it’s never seemed to progressed to anything.

I walk down New Street and actually feel unsafe. It’s depressing and dreary .. and it should be so much more

Well I've never been there in my life.

Dude, if you were looking for an absolute “Brum is a shithole” pile on, you should have said. Plenty of folks will actually think it’s ok.
Perhaps worth considering a new job if you hate it that much tho…HS2 will get you to that fancy London 15 minutes quicker in 15 years time, so not long to wait 😂

Why is London being attacked?

London is an amazing city which is of inclusive people who also love all cultures and other cities like Brum.

Birmingham is a great city. Really good shopping, great restaurant scene, good museums, fun night out. Never once felt intimidated.

Who am I meant to be intimidated by?

Lifelover16 · Yesterday 22:04

Beggars belief ..? 😂😂 I think we must be from entirely different generations because not even my mum would use a phrase like that.

What’s that got to do with Birmingham

IMO - YABU! Bloody love my adopted city, mainly for the food but also for the shopping. Commonwealth games in 2022 showcased the city at it’s absolute best.
Construction is defo a problem, as is the need for policing out from of New Street to sort out to homeless/druggie issues but these occur everywhere.
I fell for Brum when I was 13 years old, 30 years later, despite being aware of all the faults and all of the problems, I’m still as enamoured as ever. Guess I’m a Bab for life 😂

I spend a lot of time in London for work. This year I needed to spend 5 nights in a row and fuck my life. Mental health services must be non-existent in London, it was like the walking dead. Truly eye-opening. I can only assume those who are intimidated in Birmingham haven’t spent any time in a major city recently.

Worst train station layout ever

I agree that it’s bizarre. Once you get used to it, it’s fine but so confusing to any newcomer.

I went to university in Birmingham and loved some parts of the city, but disliked others. It's a bit lazy to take a dislike to an entire city of that size. Have you been to the Jewellery Quarter? The Botanical gardens, Cannon Hill Park, aroung the canal basin, UoB?

PrettyLittleRose · Yesterday 22:08

walrushurricane · Yesterday 21:59

1.2 million people live there and most no where near new street. Don't you think it a bit ridiculous to judge the whole city based on the fact that you have visited a very tiny proportion of it?

Exactly!

Fucking shithole! I’m sure there are areas that aren’t too bad but I just don’t like the place. Slightly judgy of me but I hate the accent too. I know three people from Birmingham, two are absolute cunts so that doesn’t give me a good vibe either.

Nooo!! I love the Brummie accent! What accent do you have?

I am very fond of London too. Smile

Strange that the OP doesn't seem to be in a rush to share where she is from.

I felt so scared and unsafe. I was terrified of being stabbed. I think it's the most dangerous city in the UK.

I absolutely hate it when I have to go for work.

I haven't been to Birmingham in ages so it's a shame if it's gone downhill so badly. I was a bit apprehensive but had a lovely time. We went to see the Back to Backs but had a lovely time in the museum, Curry mile, the big library and my favourite, the Pen museum. We took our little whippet and it was like walking around with a rockstar!

It really hasn’t gone downhill. New restaurants opening all the time, the best shopping in miles, great brands being attracted. There’s nothing wrong with Birmingham.

It’s normally people who seem to be terrified of a somewhere that is so multi-cultural. Says something about them, not the city.

No shade meant on London, it’s often how these type of threads go (anywhere else is nowhere type vibes) but I could just have easily said Manchester (my second fave city - although I cannot resist having a swipe at the massive white elephant that is HS2 wherever possible so probs why London was my first thought)

Who was coming at you with a knife?

No one. But there have been stabbings in the city centre. A young teen was stabbed to death in Victoria Square in a case of mistake identity.

That was quite a long time ago.

I've had colleagues from Brum come to London and they loved coming to central London and the big city

PrettyLittleRose · Yesterday 22:15

Yes, of course there is danger and crime in Brum, but there is in every city.

BeautifulLittlePumpkin · Yesterday 22:16

I don’t live there. Train outside my house takes me into the centre in around 17 mins. I think I venture in once every ten years. I feel like I should go in more often but there’s no current pull.

Forgedsnak · Yesterday 22:16

It’s a city they feels a bit edgy to me like there is danger lurking around. It is good for shopping though and most of the people I’ve encountered are nice! It’s not my cup of tea though, alright for a day trip but wouldn’t ever live there.

Rrei · Yesterday 22:17

Per capita crime and violent crime is higher in Birmingham than London

Okay, 2 years ago and you think people are still wandering around waving knives on the air? Most violence in any city is normally gang related. I feel quite safe as a mid 40s mum. They ain’t interested in me.

Someone was stabbed in convent garden recently too. Unfortunately it happens in large citys.
