To dislike Birmingham?

I’ve worked in the city maybe 4 years now .. there really isn’t much appealing about it. I once overheard a woman on the train say she does guided tours for Manc, London and Birmingham - and Bham is a hard sell.

I’ve been coming into New Street station for years and there’s always been construction and it’s never seemed to progressed to anything.

I walk down New Street and actually feel unsafe. It’s depressing and dreary .. and it should be so much more

Isn’t the Black Country accent meant to be the closest to Shakespearean English? For that alone I love it, though I do have to listen closely.

As for new street, I find there’s a pretty consistent police presence which is mostly reassuring, although stepping off the train to find armed officers is not uncommon.

I second the shout for Medicine Bakery from earlier in the thread - the food there is fabulous.

Ozzy Osbourne came from Birmingham, enough said. But also did the brilliant Spencer Group and the unsurpassed Stevie Winwood.

Only passed to through Brum once about 30 years ago on a trip to Stratford. Up Avon to see The Taming of the Shrew at the Royal Shakespeare Company .

Had to change trains from Moore St to New St Stations. Had to walk through the most awful 60's shopping developments. Jerry built, dirty, scruffy and very run down even then. So l know what you mean.

The Teletubbies BullRing Development looks to have improved the City. And after all. It is supposed to be England's Second City .

But it does not stand out as a must see National or International Tourist Must See, Hot Spot.

Was often the butt of a joke about being the only city in the UK which was designed with a motorway running through the centre of it.

I'm sorry you're offended @Ilovelurchers people can be so rude. I bet they wouldn't speak to people like this in real life. I expect some people find that poster's accent diabolical too (the one who called yours diabolical.)

Don't let the haters get you down. Flowers

Oh I absolutely used to tell my friend at uni that her brummie accent was awful. She would tell me my Yorkshire one was too. It was banter. I’ve heard all sorts about my accent from when I used to work in London and Hertfordshire.

I think the brummie accent is diabolical. People will think mine is too and that’s fine. I don’t blame them.

If people get offended by stuff like this on the internet then, fuck me, they aren’t cut out for real life.

As for all the posters commenting on the "diabolical accent" - don't you think that's a bit rude? That's my accent. If I said something about you was diabolical, would you feel insulted? I don't mean to be hypersensitive, but it doesn't feel very kind of you to say this.

People in Birmingham are generally very kind in my experience. That's what I really noticed when I moved back here, having lived in or around Oxford since I was 18. The kindness. Not saying people from Oxford are unkind, many of them are absolutely lovely - I just think people from Birmingham are especially kind and it stands out to me. Some of you could learn from them perhaps.

Hey, I’m the “diabolical accent” commenter.

Apologies if you’re offended. I’ll never not think the accent is awful.

I wouldn’t feel insulted if someone said my Yorkshire accent was diabolical.

I was friends with a girl from Brum whilst we was at university. We would banter each other about each others accents. Just like people from all over. Her family were great people, great sense of humour.

Again, sorry if you’re offended, it’s an awful accent and that’s that.

I’ve lived in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, London and Birmingham. It’s what you make of it. Birmingham had great spots and I was never bored. Went to the theatre, to the concert hall, the Christmas market is the best I’ve ever been to, far better than London’s winter wonderland. I loved the bullring for shopping, the canals, the nightlife, brilliant exhibition centre with top events and lots of places to visit that surround Birmingham. It’s a brilliant central point for visiting various places around about. I never felt unsafe, ever as a woman going about my business alone. I met all cultures and embraced it all. I have fond memories of my years living in Birmingham.
