AIBU to think that scooters and bicycles on pavements is out of control and it’s time there were laws to protects pedestrians

I cycle a lot and have never had any issues with children on scooters round here. It's all endless lines of people shuffling along lethargicly with their dogs on long leads.

And, quite frankly, am getting bored with it.

You are wrong to cycle on the pavement.

That’s about the end of it.

I use my energy getting annoyed about things that affect me. Like cars parked on pavements forcing me onto the road.

Not cyclists on empty pavements somewhere where I don't live where I don't know any of the cyclists concerned.

I'd recommend it. Still not great for the blood pressure but not as pointless as worrying about things that don't affect you.

I avoid going out at school run times so I don't tend to encounter them that much. But a while back I had a job in Central London which was near a school and I used to then, and the pavements were so narrow.

Agree about the extendable leads (and dogs generally - I've asked this before, but why oh why do people put their dog between me and them. I'm a 5 foot 3 woman, I am not a 6 foot bloke built like a brick lavatory who might conceivably be perceived as a threat!).

YABU. Bicycles and scooters belong on the road, by law, and this law should be enforced vigorously. Any bike or scooter used on the pavement should be confiscated and destroyed.

Even a kiddy tricycle?

It's a shame as I think ebikes and escooters could be a great solution to replace lots of short car journeys but in many places they are a menace.

I've walked around several cities where they are flying around pedestrianised areas. The part of London I work in is relatively less bad for it but there are still people riding up the wrong side of the road, making sudden turns etc. Have been close to being taken out by someone riding fast on the wrong side of the road a couple of times as you are just not expecting them to come that way.

And in parts of central London even the pedal bikes are bad enough. Some really badly designed junctions where bike lanes go over the pavement or the bike lane is two way and the vehicle traffic is one way. It's super confusing. And some men ride really fast and aggressively, they won't slow down for anything.

A good rule of thumb in any city is to look both ways every time you cross

One thoughtless cyclist doesn't mean all cyclists are bad just as one dangerous motorist doesn't mean they all are. Where I live some pavements are also designated as cycle lanes.

Cyclists and pedestrians are also not a good mix.

Pedestrians use our local "shared paths" at considerable risk to their safety.

Yes definitely. But it's also a good idea not to ride down the middle of the right lane down Northumberland Avenue when you are meant to drive on the left. Even if there is no traffic you don't want to end up under a lorry emerging from a side street.

Scooters? That little kids kick along on on their way to school? They should do that in the road?

That’s ridiculous! It’s just to let you know they are there - it doesn’t mean get out of the way. Damned if they ring, damned if they don’t. It’s a tinkly bell, not an air horn.

That's ridiculous. All cyclists ring so that you get out of the way, and if you don't they ring all the harder then shout, and yes on the pavement.

Phineyj · 17/10/2026 08:59

Well yes - they're letting you know they're there because they're moving much faster than you. Otherwise there would be no need to alert you!
