Humblebrag neighbour?

Cokeandfudge · 07/10/2026 21:40

My neighbour has a habit of oversharing and I usually just smile and nod but she’s really pissed me off this time and I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable to feel like this.

She and her long term partner must be late fifties/early sixties and both only work part time now. She said she was worried about their finances when they retire because they ONLY have final salary pensions worth about £20k, pension pots of £400k each plus joint savings of £800k.

Surely, she must know that is good and was just humblebragging to make me feel bad? I feel quite pissed off about it and really worried about my retirement if it is reasonable for her to be worried.

Say like others have suggested “Oh gosh yes I can see why you’re worried!” and if she says “How much have you got?” say “oh I never talk about how much money I’ve got, I always think it’s so vulgar to boast don’t you?”

VeronicaDean · 08/10/2026 12:30

Sounds like a good position to me. Assuming she's cleared her mortgage by then, she'll have very little outgoings she is obliged to pay for - most of it will be fun money.

If she brings it up again, perhaps suggest she cut down on takeaway coffees and avocado on toast.

Just grasp her hand, look her sympathetically in the eye, and say ‘Hopes and prayers, Angela.’

That’s what I wasn’t sure about. Whether her position was unusually good or mine was unusually bad. Hopefully the former from what you say.

I think £100K sounds pretty healthy, obviously I don't know how yours is! I'm not a professional, but as I say, if you're at all concerned, forget about hers and have a look at where you stand.
I don't know how old you are, but just from experience the earlier you plan and invest for retirement (if affordable) the better.

"Oh dear" (concerned face) "That is a worry. Have you discussed with a financial adviser?"

ToWhitToWhoo · 08/10/2026 12:38

It's rather insensitive of her,and an example of why it's generally best not to go into detailed discussions of one's finances with everyone. But no, not likely to be a humblebrag. I dislike this idea, probably based on what does happen on certain forms of social media, that everything people do is done to show off, Much more likely that she's just preoccupied with her financial issues, and not considerate of how discussing them in detail might affect others.

That is a good response!

Oh that's lucky Vera we know where to come for a loan or handout in future it's great of you to share the info thank you so much .

She won’t have it long if she keeps telling everyone.

My thoughts exactly. People have been kidnapped for less

Its amusing to watch, as they either think you haven't understood and repeat themselves, in which case you sympathise again, or they completely U turn, and start telling you that it isn't worrying at all.

Laurmolonlabe · 08/10/2026 15:56

Smile nod, and walk away.

She’s insecure, poor widdle rich lady.

This makes no sense to criticise me. I didn’t ask her about her “retirement prospects” and hadn’t given them any thought. She just volunteered all that information herself.

It isn’t criticism. It’s merely an observation that it doesn’t sound as if she were speaking as if to look down on you. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your permission.” I agree with her. There is nothing personal about her sharing her thoughts on her own retirement with you. Just nod and switch topics.

Rubbish. She's a braggard, she's pretty much a millionaire.

Rubbish. She’s talking about herself, not implying anything about OP. OP’s reaction of taking it personally is unjustified and OTT. OP says she’s worried about her own retirement. She’s taken offense where there isn’t one.

Ozgirl76 · 10/10/2026 08:09

I’m a petty bitch so I’d be like “oh yes, that is a bit worrying, I guess you might need to be a bit more frugal in the future” with a pittying look.
I actually love agreeing with people when they humblebrag, it’s enormous fun.

Dragonscaledaisy · 10/10/2026 08:21

I'm not sure why you think she's doing it to make you feel bad because for all she knows, you could have far more saved for your own retirement. It sounds as though she's hit a nerve because it something you're very worried about. Don't waste any more time on her and use it to think about improving your own situation.

Better to do exactly the opposite - 'Look if you ever need to borrow some money you only need to ask, there'll be no judgment on my part, don't suffer in silence.'

LlamasDramas · 10/10/2026 08:33

"I'm in a rush, can't stop to chat." Then hurriedly march off so you don't have to suffer her ridiculous bragging. Do it every time you see them. Give them a wave and ignore. They will soon get the message.

Jimmyjumpy · 10/10/2026 08:34

Are you annoyed because she is bragging, shouldnt be worried or worried for yourself?
I think the latter so try to put more £ away now.
