Humblebrag neighbour?

Cokeandfudge · 07/10/2026 21:40

My neighbour has a habit of oversharing and I usually just smile and nod but she’s really pissed me off this time and I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable to feel like this.

She and her long term partner must be late fifties/early sixties and both only work part time now. She said she was worried about their finances when they retire because they ONLY have final salary pensions worth about £20k, pension pots of £400k each plus joint savings of £800k.

Surely, she must know that is good and was just humblebragging to make me feel bad? I feel quite pissed off about it and really worried about my retirement if it is reasonable for her to be worried.

Just ignore it all. That’s what I do.

Agatha1989 · 07/10/2026 21:45

Take no notice

I normally do but this has worried me!

YANBU, humblebraggers are awful people. My cousin is one, for example she said "I've only got two houses". The best thing is to play them at their own game. Commiserate with them and they get worried and think they've got less than you.

Yogabearmous · 07/10/2026 21:46

Ignore it and say “oh dear” at every pause . It’s nonsense.

Good idea, I’ll try that if she mentions it again.

I'd say you can see why she's worried and leave it at that.

Yeah, pull a Shocked face 😦and say how sorry you are and hope they manage to get along on it.

BMW58 · 07/10/2026 22:09

Ask her is she's thought of taking in ironing 😉

seahorsessky · 07/10/2026 22:10

You never know, they might have outgoings you aren't aware of/health issues etc. If not, and if they really are trying to upset you/boast, just grin and ignore.

yes, I was going to say this. Match her energy, look concerned and nod, and say 'Really, that does sound low. It's very brave of you to have part retired, I wouldn't have dared to with such low amounts.'

I’ll offer to find out where the nearest food bank is

Just perfect your wince. And "mmm".

Could mean " god, how will you cope?" Or "god, why are you such a twat" ... and she wont be quite sure which.

How would that work?

maxslice · 08/10/2026 03:19

She’s free to worry about her retirement, even if you think she’s doing great in that respect. Unless you’ve talked to her about your own situation (and even if you have) it’s nothing to do with you. People almost always fret about having enough money in retirement no matter how well fixed they are. I seriously doubt she has given YOUR retirement prospects any thought. Why would she?

concertinacornflake · 08/10/2026 05:50

You could say 'You probably shouldn't tell people all your personal financial details' if you want to shut her down.

This makes no sense to criticise me. I didn’t ask her about her “retirement prospects” and hadn’t given them any thought. She just volunteered all that information herself.

I thought they meant that those were my financial details rather than my neighbours

Maybe I am a bitch but I would have delighted in the opportunity to say "oh yes, I can totally see why you're worried, I would need a LOT more than that. Could you get some financial advice?"

Then watch her humblebrag crumble into dust 🤣

elperil · 08/10/2026 10:27

That sounds quite low Vera, are you sure you'll have enough?. We have much bigger projections ourselves mind you.

viques · 08/10/2026 10:31

I would ask them if they have ever taken pension and investment advice from a professional as the amounts of pension, pension pot and savings seem a bit out of kilter.
