To question whether northerners are actually poorer than southerners ?

Naegriafowlia · 05/10/2026 10:02

As we know a lot of northerners seem to think all southerners are living like the Russian Romanov family pre murder and funds from the south should be directed up north because they are apparently so much poorer than us.

But is this even true? If you can buy a family home up there for 100k or less and the same size home costs 300-400k on average in the south. You already have a lot more disposable income. I know they say they get paid less, but Tesco (for example) pays the same every where and has branches everywhere. I know they also say there’s no good jobs there but where there’s people there’s schools and hospitals so you want us to believe there’s no teachers and doctors?

I know someone will say “move there then” personally I won’t be moving anywhere anytime soon as I started my family young (first born a few months after GCSEs) and my kids are all really settled in school and with friends.
Based on what I’ve heard from northerners they are more welcoming to people from countries on the other side of the planet than they are their fellow countrymen from 100 miles to the south.

Yes, but potentially less need for city bankers and stockbrokers and forensic accountants and commercial lawyers if major companies all decide to situate their headquarters in the well-connected south? But never mind, northerners can always work at Tesco!

Many southerners do work at Tesco or in other minimum wage jobs though. Even in London

I was not disagreeing with you regarding Scottish students being mocked (which I think is horrible) it just made me think of something I saw very recently where a girl was claiming she was teased for not going to private school and for having a job. Which seemed like bollocks to me. Again sorry it was a tangent and had nothing to do with what you said which I can definitely see happening

My sister went to our local university for medicine and was mocked by the southern students for having her northern accent. In the northern town they had chosen to study in, where she was a local.

Stompythedinosaur · 05/10/2026 11:26

The idea of a family home for under 100k is delusional (excepting, perhaps, some extremely bad areas or an extremely dilapidated house).

There are fewer jobs and they are, in the main, less well paid in the north. Public services serve a wider geographical area so transport costs to reach these are higher. There is less investment in businesses, less tourism etc.

It's not all bad, I love where I live. But there's ups and downs to everywhere. If you'd prefer to live in the north, then you're free to! I'm from London originally, living in Northumberland now, and I've never regretted it!

Hello87abc · 05/10/2026 11:27

I live around an area that pays the highest amount of council tax in the country yet investment in transport, infrastructure etc is very poor. There are severe levels of deprivation that goes beyond house prices.

They don’t get paid minimum wage they get London living wage generally. Very few people get actual minimum wage here.

Sunbringer · 05/10/2026 11:25

Most areas it doesn’t cost 100k or less for a house. You might get a shitty one bed that’s run down in a village 40 minutes away from anywhere for that. Average small homes in my northern town costs closer to 300k.

Doctors and nurses in London and surrounds get the Higher Cost Area uptick so are paid more.

As a northerner in London (zone 6) I can assure you that there is more money down here. Northerners aren’t poor, but southern money especially London and the Home Counties is global level wealth. Average semi detached that needs work where I live costs in excess of £1m…

You live in London. Most southerners don’t live in London you can’t seriously be looking around at all the wealth in a capital city and deciding half the country are rich

I live in the north, i don't think all Southerners are wealthy (weary sigh).

In fact if a northerner is on minimum wage and a southerner is then the northerner will be better off.

London and the Home Counties are rich. I agree that the South West aren’t and I don’t count the midlands as southern. Most people don’t mean Cornwall, Devon or the like when they say southern, they mean London + Home Counties.

Maybe I should have said between 100k and 200k for a 3 or 4 bed house. Down south a 3 bed house goes between 300-400k and 4 beds can be up to half a million.
If I for example (work in a supermarket) lived there’s I’d earn the same money I do now but have a lot more disposable income. And they want us to believe theyre impoverished and we’re all posh and stuck up

I live in the north and near me, 3 beds are also £400k plus, and 4 beds are easily over half a million. Your example isn't indicative of a North South divide. Money is disproportionately spent on the South. I lived down there for quite a while and was amazed when the roads, which were already 1000x better than the ones I was used to, were being resurfaced and money spent on them. They were made to be F1 standard. Meanwhile, in many forgotten about Northern towns, you could barely find the road for the potholes. All round better transport and then naturally opportunies for jobs is in the South.

Thanks for the laugh, OP! 🤣

Have you ever met any northerners? We're not fucking aliens 🤣 nor do we all believe the same things, or do the same jobs or earn money the same way.

Also where are these places one can buy a family home for less than £100k??

You can get a two bed house in certain parts of west Lancashire for less than £100k .

Pedant61 · 05/10/2026 11:35

OP, you suggest that all northerners are the same financially, as are all southerners. This is clearly not true - there are as many variations as there are people. We really don't need these stereotypes.

SeedsOfReason · 05/10/2026 11:36

It's not all about disposable income, it's about investment in public facilities and how much is spent per capita, how much is spent on public transport etc.

Many northern towns are under-funded and going to the dogs - it's that simple.

Public transport is rubbish - look at London with tube trains going everywhere, coming along every couple of minutes in peak time - compared with one train or bus an hour in the north, that's usually late and overcrowded; convoluted routes that mean it takes two hours to go by train to somewhere that's about 25 minutes' drive away.

Town centres turning into rows of shuttered up, decaying shops relieved only by vape shops and Turkish barbers.

It's depressing.

Do you really not understand how someone is able to respond to a specific part of a sentence without needing to acknowledge the other?

She said both southerners and Londoners worked for minimum wage. I pointed out that actually Londoners earn the LLW.

Its not a point that required me to address southerners getting minimum wage because I was correcting her about London.

What about renters? Who don’t own their property eventually. Rent is still way cheaper up north.

Wrt the mortgages it’s not about what you can get but about what you need to get. There’s no option for a southern to buy a family home for less than 200k in the south. They have no choice but to bust balls to pay their mortgage every month so their family aren’t homeless

There is an issue in places like Stoke and Middlesbrough where lots of middle class people from the South have bought up loads of houses as buy to lets for investment purposes because their equity increases enabled them to do this. This priced out huge numbers of working class people on low incomes from being able to buy their own home because they couldn't compete with buyers who had more money, particularly cash buyers.

There's also a lot of southerner who bought down south and then gained lots of equity and moved north, again pushing up prices in the north and edging out working class people from northern areas which were regarded as nice. Many of these were ex-council properties. I regularly come across locals here who initially make a dig and inquire about how long I've lived in the area. They immediately change tone when they know I've been around for a long long time and didn't move north.

We hear a lot about immigrants coming over and taking housing but there's also a big class resentment about gentrification from white middle class southerners and landlords from the south changing the character of an area massively which isn't talked about anywhere near as much as it should be. Often because it is white middle class southerners who control political agendas because politics is so centralised in the UK so it's an inconvenient story that no one really wants to admit to because the chances are they have skin in the game.

I have had mutual acquaintances say to me that there isn't a cat in hells chance they'd ever visit us even if we lived on a gated estate because they had no desire to Go Up North, such is the level of snobbery and superiority I've come across. And no it wasn't tongue in cheek it was deadly serious. I've had friends who I've ultimately lost touch with because they were never willing to travel north because there was everything they needed in London.

I've also had real issues with TV representation of the North as simply because grim, terrace houses, working class oinks with no manners. One of the worst was the portal of Colin Parry father of Tim Parry who was killed in the IRA bombing of Warrington. As he's a real life person it was particularly jarring as they 'working classed' him rather than show him as northern middle class. Again this is decisions made by southerners. That ultimately grate and I think create tension and then there's a lot of northerners who get rather grumpy about the South.

As a rule I think there is also something of a cultural difference between the middle class in the south and the middle class in the north. It's is often about this need to virtue signal or keep up appearances. I think there's a much more down to earth attitude in the north. It's not everywhere - I think Manchester can be full of shit on this at time - but as a general rule I think it applies.

I think theres a lot of north / south clashes that the north is aware of, but the south ultimately just doesn't have much of a clue about in terms of it's impact and real world consequence because they simply have never been to a lot of these places. Northerners are much more likely to visit various places in the south for numerous reasons. Not least because we are more dependent on cars than the average Londoner (this doesn't apply to the SW though) as public transport is a fantasy outside the cities. That's why Burnham's Bloody Buses are significant and important.

We also have massive issues in terms of how long term policies have favours cities and had massive negative effects on small towns and rural areas. The inability for various London based governments to grasp issues like food security and critical industries that are based outside the SE is really starting to have some significant impacts. This is going to increasing become a major political narrative over the next few years.

If southerners want to be ignorant to how life is in the north - or just generally outside the SE, I don't really have a lot of time for it and yeah I probably do have an attitude about it.

There's too many people who never venture outside London and simply don't understand the world beyond in the rest of the country!

The handwaving away about the issues the north has, really isn't ok.

I do think the north is better in quality for many middle class people compared with the pressures of London. But this really doesn't mean that it's economically better off. Nor does it mean that there isn't really dreadful poverty in some places. None of this takes away from issues with poverty in London.

I just wish there was a better understanding of anywhere outside the SE bubble tbh as it's now getting to a point where this divide has been neglected for so long that these issues have been somewhat existential to the functioning of the country as a whole.

I’m comparing a small/medium sized town by the sea to a small/medium sized town by the sea. If I compared London to Manchester the prives would obviously both be higher but London still more expensive

Northern sea towns are fairly grim on the whole! And generally quite poor. The North East, is on the whole poorer than the north west. So a small town by the sea may not be anywhere near comparable!

Take grange over sands and Morecambe as 2 northern small towns by the sea with vastly different house prices!

You think southern towns aren’t also suffering from shuttered up relieved only by Turkish barber and vape shop syndrome? If that’s a measure of how hard northerners have it then southerners have it just as bad (while paying more for the pleasure)
