To question whether northerners are actually poorer than southerners ?

Naegriafowlia · 05/10/2026 10:02

As we know a lot of northerners seem to think all southerners are living like the Russian Romanov family pre murder and funds from the south should be directed up north because they are apparently so much poorer than us.

But is this even true? If you can buy a family home up there for 100k or less and the same size home costs 300-400k on average in the south. You already have a lot more disposable income. I know they say they get paid less, but Tesco (for example) pays the same every where and has branches everywhere. I know they also say there’s no good jobs there but where there’s people there’s schools and hospitals so you want us to believe there’s no teachers and doctors?

I know someone will say “move there then” personally I won’t be moving anywhere anytime soon as I started my family young (first born a few months after GCSEs) and my kids are all really settled in school and with friends.
Based on what I’ve heard from northerners they are more welcoming to people from countries on the other side of the planet than they are their fellow countrymen from 100 miles to the south.

This may well be one of the most idiotic and ignorant posts I’ve seen on Mumsnet.

Are you aware ‘the South’ isn’t just London and is actually far wider point to point than the North? Are you aware that the South West has the worst salary-to-house-price ratio in the country? Are you aware that Cornwall is one of the most deprived places in the country, and averagely their wages are 80% of the national average? Are you aware that London has the highest poverty rates in England at 27%? Are you aware London has the highest homeless total numbers and rate in England?

You sound very silly saying ‘the south’.
please educate yourself.

What's the key drivers of house prices in Cornwall, North Wales and the Lake District?

I don't think we can have this conversation without addressing this particular elephant in the room. Who owns the houses?

The biggest thing isn't really a north/south divide. It's a class divide.

What do you notice here?:

Highest Social Grade (AB - Higher & Intermediate Managerial/Professional):
• London: 28.4%
• South East: 28.2%
• East of England: ~24%
• West Midlands: ~21%
• South West: ~22%
• North West: ~21%
• East Midlands: ~20%
• Wales: 19.6%
• Yorkshire and The Humber: 19.4%
• North East: 18.3%

Here is a run down property needing renovation in Bradford, W Yorkshire - 3 bed, Victorian terrace, under £60k - this is not an auction, that's the asking price.

In London, even in this poor condition, I think you'd find another '0' on the end of the price.

Holy shit 😂😂
The auction price is the starting price. I think you should just admit you didn’t know what auction price meant and we can move on

I literally never said anything about auction starting prices? You brought up auctions? And house fires?? I never looked on Rightmove and I still haven't!

Yes please move on, stop fucking tagging me!!

Do the following search: Victor Road Bradford Mining

There's your reason for the price. It's not mortgageable and it's entirely possible you might buy the property only for it to develop huge cracks and be declared unsafe.

I'm not sure this is really comparable with most of the property market in London for this reason.

Southerners moving up north have most likely been driven out of the south by house prices them selves but there’s no sympathy for them.

I'm not sure why sympathy is required.

I got priced out where I grew up in midlands - M40 meant house prices went up as new people moved in and pushed demand up. I've never held it against individuals - nor have I ever known anyone to do so - but as a trend it was annoying and worrying and had consquences.

Now I've done the same where I am - we couldn't afford house prices in city DH worked in so went to where we could - we were at the start of a wave that driven prices up and locals out. It comes with downside secondary school is pretty bad but overall it's okay.

Generations before people got sucked south - I did for a while - or into London for work becuase that where the jobs all were with prospects. Now taking them with wages on offer make that look less attractive becuase cost of living and housing are higher.

It's just life.

I'd have liked to live near family where DH family are there's little to no work and where mine are we can't afford high rents or high house prices. We've also had to move the kids school for work reasons - so all this it's not fair we can't move because of school and support networks - well some of us had to anyway.

You seem incredibly dense, you said you could find a property for 100k in London and I’m just explaining that you cannot and if you found something on rightmove even close to that price it would probably be a burnt down house and the price would be the starting price for auction.

Wonder if you live near me @5foot5
My 3 bed semi in run down condition would cost you well over £300k as a project
Detached 4 beds around a million
Many big firms are concentrated in Manchester or Liverpool - with only poorer paid manufacturing jobs locally
DP always has to commute (currently to Leeds) to find decent pay in his role
OP are you aware there are much fewer hospitals - someone who lives in the Lake District needing specialist treatment has to travel to Newcastle or Manchester!

I was responding to someone who’d posted about “gentrification” and the big mean southerners coming up and buying bigger houses in the north. Because how dare they not want their son and daughter to have to share a room.

People love to moan about “gentrifiers” moving in and making the area more expensive but don’t consider that those people were priced out of whether they lived first.

The south receives markedly more investment into infrastructure and development.

I think it depends where you look but I was very surprised when I was working in a southern village with industrial park/complex in it down south that it had a very good railway station with frequent trains to nearby towns.

I was surprised becuase I lived near one the largest towns in country that didn't have even a station and - service then were pretty poor at the ones that did. That has since changed - and money been put into area over last few decades. Where I am there is quite a bit of transport money being spent on public transport systems.

However the south east did manange to hang onto more of the rail netwrok from 1960 cuts - but I've since read even worse cuts had been planned at various points - so could be even worse.

But mining history is part and parcel of buying houses in many northern areas - that's exactly my point, it isn't comparable with the London market.

How is Yorkshire in the midlands? If you actually look at a map of England it’s not anywhere near the middle and Northern means Northern England not Northern UK.

The southern part of South Yorkshire is lower than some parts of Lincolnshire. It is almost half way from the Northern most point of England to the southernmost point of Hampshire. So midland.

That's nice.

Shall we talk about unemployment?

Always fascinating when talking about wealth.

To question whether northerners are actually poorer than southerners ?

You seem to think only sourthern are being affected and need some sort of sympathy.

Genrticifation pushed people out all over the country - and they in turn push others out - like I was pushed out and have gone on to do the same - I'm not a southerner.

I was born and bred in midland but have worked in the south couple of northern cities - twenty years ago in northen city we were then in I met families who moved to northen citiy from London because it gave them a better lifestyle with lower housing costs and living costs - this is not news to anyone.

You are coming across as very ignorant of rest of the country and very whiney.

Yes you may have more disposiable income in north - if you can get a similar job and wage - so move no-one owns you anything in this life - yes there are downsides to moving but many of us have had to suck those up for a better lifestyle.

Well in terms of wealth both in economic and social terms in fairly sure demand for buying a house that's likely to fall down a mine shaft isn't a desirable thing in terms of your quality of life really.

I'm not sure of your point here.

It sounds like you are saying northerners should be grateful for this wonderful investment opportunity and that they have some where to live cos it's cheap because it's better to worry about this than to not be able to afford to buy a property at all. Cracks, damp problems and condemn notices be damned.

Dragonasaurus · 05/10/2026 14:36

Hahahaha
OP, as we all know, the north is basically still back-to-backs on cobbled streets, outside loos and dark satanic mills. The south is soooo much better, you definitely shouldn’t move here there

Naegriafowlia · 05/10/2026 14:38

Noddyslittleredcar · 05/10/2026 13:48

Is the area comparable though? Are the crime rates the same, education and employment opportunities, transport links, access to green spaces, hobbies etc.

And if they are, then why haven't you moved?

I said why I havent moved I settled down early and had my first child literally a few months after my GCSEs now my kids are settled and happy with friends and I don’t want to move because of that.

Other southerners have done it though because it just makes more sense financially. Although they do get called “gentrifier” (for moving around their own country 😂)

I also assume access to green spaces is better as the population density is lower no?

Part of the problem, @Naegriafowlia , with your ill thought-out little rant, is 9that you're not speaking for The South, you are speaking about your limited part of it, which I'm guessing is the Sarf East. I'm from the south west. We're not too keen on the imbalance of opportunity, resource funding, infrastructure provision etc etc either, with by far the biggest share of any pie somehow always ending up in the south east.
I now live in Cumbria. That's proper Up North, in case you don't know. We don't notice our pension going any further up here. Our 3 bed house cost £350,000 - if we lived a few miles up the road it would be considerably more. Our nearest town has areas of significant deprivation where people cannot even dream of ever owning a house.
People might be more inclined to engage in a proper debate with you if you could provide actual stats to back up your claims. As it is, your argument is little more than the musings of someone who has no experience outside of their own little bubble (and is not planning to gain any, as you admitted). I suspect you've never even set foot in The North which you claim to know all about.

Thought you said you weren't going to engage with me any more, anyway? I had such hope.

Clearly lack of brains is also existent in Southerners! You know Northerners vary. Try hanging out in North Yorkshire villages for a week, or Ilkley, Harrogate etc and I guarantee you will be out poshed! And Out moneyed! Travel up to Middlesborough and you can probably buy a home for £20k. Try buying a house in York for £200k or the Lake District?
