To question whether northerners are actually poorer than southerners ?

Naegriafowlia · 05/10/2026 10:02

As we know a lot of northerners seem to think all southerners are living like the Russian Romanov family pre murder and funds from the south should be directed up north because they are apparently so much poorer than us.

But is this even true? If you can buy a family home up there for 100k or less and the same size home costs 300-400k on average in the south. You already have a lot more disposable income. I know they say they get paid less, but Tesco (for example) pays the same every where and has branches everywhere. I know they also say there’s no good jobs there but where there’s people there’s schools and hospitals so you want us to believe there’s no teachers and doctors?

I know someone will say “move there then” personally I won’t be moving anywhere anytime soon as I started my family young (first born a few months after GCSEs) and my kids are all really settled in school and with friends.
Based on what I’ve heard from northerners they are more welcoming to people from countries on the other side of the planet than they are their fellow countrymen from 100 miles to the south.

I think it’s the other way round. Like Southerners are all millionaires with no authenticity or humour. And ‘so unfriendly’ apparently.

Yeah exactly, note I haven’t actually said anything either negative or positive about the north other than pointing out the housing cost differences (which I can see for myself on rightmove) they’ll* like to think we’re looking down on them and saying it’s a dump and they wear flat caps and are covered in soot blah blah. Nobody’s said that and I’ve never heard a southerner say it.

*by “they” I mean “professional northerners”(obsessed with being northerer) not regular northerners

And you do hear all the time that southerners are posh, arrogant and nasty

Are you actually ok op? You’re very defensive and aggressive

I thought southerners were supposed to be the ones allergic to robust conversation!

ShattonerfDaParp · 05/10/2026 13:28

That may well be the falsest premise for a post/thread I've ever seen. And to think us northerners are supposed to be the chippy ones!

Straw manning when it’s a quote from you. You don’t seem capable of reading back the conversation between you and me. I’m not going to bother engaging with you further tbh like a brick wall

Okay. Let's read it back:

Cuckoolodger: You can get a two bed house in some parts of west Lancashire for less than £100k

Me: Yes and I'm sure you can in some parts of London as well, but it doesn't make it useful to extrapolate that to cover half of the entire country

Notice how it didn't go like this:

Cuckoolodger: You can get a two bed house in some parts of west Lancashire for less than £100k

Me: Yes and there are listings on Rightmove at this very second for houses in London for less than £100k that are not auction properties and have definitely never been in a house fire. And also a burnt out auction property is exactly the same as a two bed house in a deprived area in the north.

You see the difference?

As for not engaging with me, good! Stop nitpicking with me and go and address some of the really thoughtful arguments people have made about the actual fundamentals of your (bonkers) stance!

Swissmeringue · 05/10/2026 13:30

I grew up in Lancashire and now live just outside London. In my entirely subjective experience, on average people have more disposable income up north. The increased property prices and more expensive services (childcare costs substantially more here for example) eat up any extra salary and then some.

There's probably more genuinely loaded people in the south, and it's largely irrelevant to us because DH works in a job that basically only exists here so we have to live where we do. But yeah, on the whole my family up north seem to have a lot more cash to splash than people with equivalent education and professional roles living near us down South.

You can’t do that though op Wink we’re all rich, cold, unfriendly, po-faced materialists and they’re all salt of the earth types with a joke and a bootstraps attitude.

GoldMoon · 05/10/2026 13:37

We moved from the South East 11 years ago . It allowed us to buy a property outright and for me to go part time .
The house we left went on the market last year and it sold for 55% more ( Rightmove tells you that )
We couldn't afford to move back to that area and the house we have has not increased in value by that % .

I’m Scottish and I find the north vs south divide entirely baffling.

Scotland has an east/west divide but it’s not really the same thing.

I’ve witnessed southerners looking down on northerners for no reason other than their accent.

I’ve witnessed a blue collar southern couple look down on an educated, better paid, professional couple because they came from a northern city.

It’s weird

Edited

Especially since, to us, you’re all Southerners 🤣.

People talk about the North East and I think they mean Aberdeen

Agree completely.

I was born in an unfashionable former-industrial Northern town. You’d struggle to get anything much for £100k, let alone a “family home” of the type the OP means.

You could get a run-down two bed Victorian terrace that needs a lot of work, in a poor area, or a studio flat. That’s about it.

I have personally seen family homes for rent for 900 in the north which cost 1800 down here. In towns with a branch of the shop I work for so I could move there and earn the same money.

And I’d have 800 a month more disposable income.

Apparently it’s “bonkers” “stupid” “thick” and “demented bullshit” to point this out

You need to define what you mean by North and South.
Newcastle is the North. Cumbria is the North. The South is more than London.
Even more confusing is that parts of Yorkshire arguably are really smack bang in the centre of the country and have no business saying they are Northern. They are the Midlands.

The usual people referred to in this context though is not those from Cumbria, nor Newcastle. But Yorkshire. And Lancashire. They moan the most.

The North as in Yorkshire and Lancashire do indulge in believing they are hard done by. They do think the South is full of people who have more. That they do not get opportunities. It is in danger of becoming embarrassing if they don’t stop. You cannot say you are a fast moving, exciting area and still beat that drum of needing to level up. The record has got a bit stuck.

There are poor people in the North ( all of the North) and the South. But also in the West and the East. In our Coastal towns. In the Midlands.
There are plenty of areas that need levelling up to the North I would say.

A lot of the Civil Service is in the North. And I do not mean No10 North. And long before Andy B became PM. Digital industries are in the North. They have shopping malls galore. Race courses. Michelin star restaurants. The big cities are university towns.

Our new PM realised that the focus on Manchester would mean more attention on it. And that it would not make sense with the we need ‘levelling up’ message. And tried desperately to say Manchester of today has just occurred recently.
No it has not.

As to housing. There are plenty of houses in the North that are as expensive as in the South. When I moved from the North to the South it wasn’t that much difference price wise for an ordinary house.

When I moved to the North I had no idea of how some, not all, hate Southerners. I soon learnt. But I had not grown up with the same loathing of Northerners in the South. I was once told Northerners were ‘better people’. Imagine telling a Northerner Southerners were ‘better people’. You wouldn’t hear the end of it.

I found generally Northerners friendly. But it is not always genuine. So you have to be careful. Very nosy. I did not find them blunt at all compared to where I am from in the South. That is rubbish. Frugal, yes. Southerners could learn a thing of two there. They expect value for money. But blunt. No. They are too worried about being seen to be ‘friendly’.

In the South at work nobody would go out for lunch or after work with someone they didn’t like ( unless it was a whole team thing).
They do. Was my experience.

How is Yorkshire in the midlands? If you actually look at a map of England it’s not anywhere near the middle and Northern means Northern England not Northern UK.

PigeonsAmongstTheCats · 05/10/2026 13:46

This may well be one of the most idiotic and ignorant posts I've seen on Mumsnet.

The south receives markedly more investment into infrastructure and development. That doesn't mean northerners are all impoverished, or that they all hate southerners. It means that things like transport infrastructure is lacking, there are fewer opportunities for high paid jobs, less consistent access to services etc.

I'm not sure where anyone is buying a family home for under £100k anywhere in this country, aside perhaps from houses that need completely stripping, renovating or rebuilding.

For what it's worth, many of my fellow northerners and I are paid much higher salaries than many southerners, and greatly enjoy the quality of life that our choices have brought.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 05/10/2026 13:47

I have a senior public sector job and if I lived up north I’d lose about £3500 London weighting but other than that exact same salary, and my home would be 1/4 of the price. Of course northerners are better off IF they have a job of course

Is the area comparable though? Are the crime rates the same, education and employment opportunities, transport links, access to green spaces, hobbies etc.

And if they are, then why haven't you moved?

RedToothBrush · 05/10/2026 13:50

A search for a 3 bed property within any range of me for under £100k comes up with pretty much just Stoke, Blackpool and Preston for lots of choice.

There are some other places but it's somewhat more limited in choice. Certainly this isn't very practical for a lot of people in the northwest.

Especially if you want to be able to afford to insure a car too. Good luck getting a mortgage on plenty of properties in Stoke, what with it's known issues with subsidence.

Indeed almost all the properties there are have a history of coal mining or are old textile mill towns. It's a really strange coincidence.

Are you aware ‘the South’ isn’t just London and is actually far wider point to point than the North? Are you aware that the South West has the worst salary-to-house-price ratio in the country? Are you aware that Cornwall is one of the most deprived places in the country, and averagely their wages are 80% of the national average? Are you aware that London has the highest poverty rates in England at 27%? Are you aware London has the highest homeless total numbers and rate in England?

You sound very silly saying ‘the south’.
please educate yourself.

PigeonsAmongstTheCats · 05/10/2026 13:51

Naegriafowlia · 05/10/2026 10:21

Maybe I should have said between 100k and 200k for a 3 or 4 bed house. Down south a 3 bed house goes between 300-400k and 4 beds can be up to half a million.
If I for example (work in a supermarket) lived there’s I’d earn the same money I do now but have a lot more disposable income. And they want us to believe theyre impoverished and we’re all posh and stuck up

I'm not speaking for every single northerner here. But honestly we don't think southerners are all posh. We also don't think southerners are better. Some may be stuck up, sure, but not all.

Hope that clarifies the issue for you.

Runcorn, St Helens, Stoke, Rochdale, Burnley, Chorley, Preston, Blackpool, Bury or Blackburn?

I'm sure you could arrange a house viewing if you were really interested.

Have you ever met any northerners? We're not fucking aliens 🤣 nor do we all believe the same things, or do the same jobs or earn money the same way.

Also where are these places one can buy a family home for less than £100k??

ive Just looked on rightmove, Blackburn and a surrounding ten mile area there are 760 properties currently for sale at £100k or less, loads of three bed terraces , a three bed bungalow as well. Would you want to live in any of them, potentially not!
