She is absolutely right isn't she? Discussing the triple lock pension challenge and instead focusing on getting people into work. Do you agree with her ? Working 3 or 6 or 9 hours to then top up with benefits isn't the way forward (not including disabilities in here )

Increases in minimum wages impacts employers, particularly those running small businesses which in turn impacts growth negatively . It has increased by over 45% in the last 5 years.

How do we square suppressing NMW with the rising cost of living? NMW jobs are key to underpinning everything else. People need food, housing, health, transport. So who bridges that gap? You can't whinge about NMW being too high and yet want to cut benefits for working people.

And not increasing NMW keeps the welfare bill high. So choose your poison.

JanesEmu · 07/10/2026 14:43

An increase of 45% over 5 years wouldn’t really be considered suppressing minimum wage.

Menopausalsourpuss · 07/10/2026 15:02

Minimum wage is a really bad idea, although it sounds good. If we had not had minimum wage or mass immigration, wages would have increased as the supply of workers would have been alot lower. The problem is not low wages but high housing costs (and energy costs which are among the highest in the world) which our govts have also caused. Recent governments have pumped up the cost of assets (houses) with quantative easing since the financial crash of 2008 which has also massively contributed to the cost of housing as have these various stupid help to buy schemes they have brought in.

It sounds like a lot, but with CoL increase it isn't. And of course the problem remains: what do you do when people working full time can't afford the basics?

That assumes that employers would pay their staff fairly. Your belief in trickle down economics is touching, but the rewards of all that cheap labour will just flow straight to tax havens. Yes, we need to address the cost of housing etc, but letting businesses off the hook will be disastrous for everyone except shareholders.

Non minimum wage has only gone up 27% in the same period and those are the people also funding the increase in benefits, however you want spin it’s clear that people need to get back to work and stop being so entitled.

Because they’re being taxed out of existence to fund ballooning benefits. It really can’t continue forever, surely you see that?

Under my proposal John gets UC of e.g. 80% of his salary for e.g. 3 months (up to certain very generous limit, not talking about FTSE CEO package of course), then e.g. 60% for another 3 months, then 30% for one months and then that's it. Only if he's made redundant. Numbers indicative and need to be properly designed.
This will allow him to recover, retrain if needed and spend time looking for a suitable job.

If he hasn't found a job by that time then he has to do whatever job wider local area needs doing, cleaning streets, picking fruits, whatever.

If a person doesn't work in the area they should not be provided with housing support in this area, but moved to the cheapest housing area in the country. You will be shocked how many will find ability to work in this circumstances.

Massive savings from this approach to be redirected in social housebuilding and reduction of taxes.

If he lives in social housing he wont be able to do a fruit picking job if its live in

"a. Fruit picking veg picking etc a lot of which is LIVE IN work. If you rent social housing you have to actually live there. You are not allowed to live away from home for the length of time these employers want you to. If you want that you will need to give SH tenants more rights! But that would also mean giving them more rights to leave their home for other reasons Up for that are we? Dont bother cos i know the answer to that already.
b. Gas safety checks fire door checks electric checks Surveys My tenancy agreement says i have to be home for these and no i cant get a friend or neighbour to do it for me.
c. the hatred there is for SH tenants ensures that some busybody would probably report the flat as abandoned if a tenant were to risk their tenancy by taking this job.
d. i have mentioned SH tenants because they will be the most likely group expected to take these jobs yet their hands are tied and they cant And even if they wont perhaps they want a life after the working day (just like home owners have) You know the ones who arent expected to do these jobs instead of sharing a berth with a stranger"

They wouldnt pay fairly as the abolition of the wages councils in the early 90s proved

so they have to leave their social housing and move closer to jobs. It's brutal, but we really can't afford this enabling welfare.

Are you seriously suggesting someone in SH give it up and move to seasonal (caravan) accommodation to earn NWM. Then what? You think that few months of work will mean someone doesn't need to claim welfare any more?

They really don’t.

They believe all the nice tag lines sold to them by the Green Party about how we could all have whatever we wanted, if we just taxed the rich enough, etc 😐

We lost another 300 million in tax only last week when another rich person emigrated…

There’s always some excuse as to why they can’t possibly do something, like everything should be super easy and rewarding and well paid and undemanding and…

No, it means that council housing in a specific area should only be provided to people who work in this area. If they don't, they have to be moved to either social housing in the cheapest areas of UK or to the areas where they can work. This measure alone will "encourage" a lot of people into employment.

As always, truly disabled exempt.

So you dont see tenants as people but as chess pieces. In which case dont moan when family members cant race round to elderly relatives at the drop of a hat oh but plenty of you do whinge about that on here

So what you're saying then is that democracy is a sham? That governments exist only to introduce policies the ultra rich will approve of, because if they don't, these people will leave and take their money with them.
And you're OK with this, because you believe we can squeeze enough to stay afloat out of the poorest in our society by cutting their benefits. Unfortunately the maths says otherwise.
Even the most draconian measures against your target group wouldn't raise enough to keep our elderly and ill. So what then, harder work and higher taxes all round, because we can't ask people making £1m a day to contribute more, because they own us?

I assume that since you want the benefits bill cut, you are also in favour of abandoning the triple lock? After all over 50% of the benefits bill is pensions.

No.

If anything it’s a sham because so many people are now dependant on the welfare state they can’t really introduce policies cutting it as they will lose their votes, and therefore the election. Rich people still only have 1 vote.

They don't. We have such dire situation with social care for elderly because most relatives can't be bothered, because they feel they sacrificed their lives by taking an elderly parent to a hospital appointment.

When people who earn above minimum wage are described as ultra rich, you know you’re in a bad (and ridiculous) situation.
