The Strange Death of Pillock

When I was a kid in the 80s, pillocks were everywhere. Even I was sometimes a pillock. Nowadays you never hear about pillocks. It’s gone the way of wazzock and bounder.

AIBU to rail against the death of pillock?

C. f. ‘Muggins here’

I'm struggling to accept that. If it were rhyming slang from "Berkshire Hunt" it would be pronounced "bark".

Yes that one doesn’t make sense to me. No one pronounces the first syllable of Berkshire as Berk, except possibly confused Americans.

Teen ds uses "melt"

Twerp and divot need resurrecting. As does Hell's teeth.

I still use it when I’m trying not to call someone a knob

I use lollygagging, been trying to bring it back for years but only my 11year old is on board 😅

We also say this in our house.

I thought this was going to be a book title. It has a ring to it. Maybe not booker worthy but Richard and Judy level

I use pillock on a daily basis. Very useful affectionate insult.

Wazzock is also a brilliant word but has very rural overtones for me: its like calling someone a hillbilly and doesn’t really feel right in London.

I love bellend but for me that’s an insult for someone who you really don’t like.

Melon is popular in our family as in "a right melon" if you do something daft.
I will join in the resurrection of Pillock with gusto!

'Nana is another excellent fruit based comment.

I assumed 'div' had fallen out of favour when saw a man wearing a jacket with a brand name of 'Chaotic Div' on the back. Amused me no end.

Noooooo
It is slang .
Berkshire Hunt ....

Edited

I never knew that, it was just an insult growing up. Still love the way it sounds.

Can't remember when I last heard pillock, definitely time for resurrection. Thanks for the thread!

Perennial divot user here - we had a dictionary when I was a kid that defined it as 'thick sod' so it stuck Grin
