WIBU to shout at a woman who made this comment to my husband? Possibly racist?

We were in a car park today and he was talking waiting for a woman to reverse. She came out and ushered him with his hand to reverse around the corner for her and that it was “one way” (it wasn’t there was two lanes). She got aggressive, got out the car and banged on my window. Husband told her to stop touching his car and not to startle me.

She then went round to his window and when he started talking said “well you’re not local”

I was furious. My husband is of African heritage, and has a slight accent, he’s a British citizen. He told me to leave it, but I was so angry. I went to her car and shouted “what do you mean he’s not local? You fucking racist”

A man who was on the opposite side of the road told my husband that she was being arsey and there’s a 2way system. He moved his car to my husband could park there.

😭 I’m not confrontational in the slightest, but I felt like it was an awful comment. I was shaking with rage and I was shouting at her.

Wibu?

No, you weren’t unreasonable. Don’t worry yourself. She deserved more than you gave her.

MyCatIsAnAeroplane · 03/10/2026 17:38

Yeah, she absolutely deserved that. Good on you. Call it out

dairydebris · 03/10/2026 17:40

I agree shes a racist POS, but if your husband asked you to leave it I think you should have left it.

I know, he said when I got back in the car that he deals with comments like this everyday. It just felt like something took over me and I had to tell her. I apologised to my husband and he said it’s fine, but not to put myself in danger with these people. I shouldn’t have got out

OP posts:
Heyitsmeem · 03/10/2026 17:41

And I mean I shouldn’t have got out because he didn’t want me to, not that I was putting myself in danger. It’s just disgusting to hear someone say that

No need to say " your not local". Stupid woman

Heyitsmeem · 03/10/2026 17:57

We’ve lived in this area for 5 years. My husband moved to this area when he was 10. “You’re not local” 😡 it was a car park a 5 minute drive from his childhood home.

My assumption would be that she means not local as in new to the specific area so don't already know the carpark layout.

Either way she sounds problematic.

Well she didn’t say it to me, when my window was open? I’m white

I’m not saying she was racist, I’m not saying she wasn’t. But if you’re looking for a possible alternative interpretation then I would ask whether this is possible:
the road markings indicate that it is a two way system and (rightly or wrongly) she feels that the ‘locals’ have all implemented an informal one-way system.

I think that could be a possible explanation. I’m not saying that makes it right to shout and angrily gesture at you. I am not saying that ‘local’ informal systems are relevant or should take precedence over the actual road layout. I’m hoping that you might take comfort in the idea that she possibly meant something other than referring to his african heritage/ appearance/ accent.

DoubleOFeckinBollocks · 03/10/2026 18:11

Did he really tell her not to startle you? That’s added a soupçon of bullshit.

And, if this actually happened and you swore and shouted, you embarrassed yourself.

Backedoffhackedoff · 03/10/2026 18:13

What did she do when you shouted you’re a fucking racist at her?

How is it embarrassing to shout at someone you’re having an argument with?

it’s so wimpy to go around avoiding things because you’re frightened of being embarrassed

😂😂 soupçon… bullshit how exactly?

Yes, it did actually happen. She was banging on my window and shouting. My husband doesn’t want his car window banged on or me feeling intimidated. Where’s the issue?

Embarrassing to ask someone to clarify what they meant when they said my husband wasn’t local? I asked her many times to explain, she said nothing. And so yes I shouted at her.

she had had this conversation with me, I told her that there’s no one way system, there never has been, and it’s a two way system (confirmed by the man who moved his car). She didn’t tell me in this conversation that I wasn’t local… but after 2 seconds of hearing my husbands accent, she said that.

She's trash and absolutely Racist. What an ignorant bitch

Tel12 · 03/10/2026 18:24

She sounded deranged. Your husband was right though, pick your battles.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 03/10/2026 18:27

You did nothing wrong. She sounds vile and needed to be called out in the strongest possible terms.

Lararoft · 03/10/2026 18:41

Definitely a racist, unfortunately my cousin’s Nigerian husband has had similar.

This is an extremely generous interpretation

Happyjoe · 03/10/2026 18:55

Sorry this happened to you guys - and I presume happens more and more as is the state of the UK now.

I hope karma bites her in the arse, I really do. Disgusting woman.

Xanhi · 03/10/2026 19:04

Some one once said it to me and I told her to fuck off. I don't regret it at all.

useyournoodle · 03/10/2026 19:27

Are you local to that area, or were you just visiting and from that she took you didn’t know the area and car park?

Unless you were from that area, I wouldn’t have immediately jumped to thinking she was racist.

Did you bother to read all the OP’s posts? Her DH has lived in that area since he was 10.
