The Cornell 7

AIBU in thinking that this case should have been investigated more at the time?

Cornell 7 case has been in the news lately. 7 men in Cornell university have been alleged to have sexually assaulted a female student.

Its not black and white as she texted the man the next day and wrote 'nothing illegal happened with the sex last night', but I think that people can go into shock.

What's known for sure is that One of the men wrote in a group chat that night that there was 'free pussy' upstairs. That use of language really makes me sad.

They are reopening the case now

Ffs how many times as women have we been mistreated, actually felt embarrassed ourselves about it, and initially said ‘oh don’t worry it’s fine’ before time goes on and you realise it very much was NOT ok and you gather the courage to do something about it?

Very few people have the strength to call shit out in the spot hence all the ‘to the person who’ posts on Facebook, when you’re shocked it’s very normal to brush things off and act like it’s all fine.

Her texts are meaningless. They advertised a very intoxicated girl on a WhatsApp group like she was a deliveroo order. It sickens me.

oh absolutely I can understand why she wrote it.

Just you and I know, they are going to use it as evidence against her in court.

It's a very sad case. It has actually made me feel bad all week, remembering my own sexual assault attack, that was slightly similiar, at a party, just one man.

And its made me think of all the other women i know that have been raped, my mum, my aunties etc

from what I’ve read - the message wasn’t the next day it was a week later - she was trying to find out what happened as she was drugged and couldn’t remember everything and also was trying to get him to admit what happened - hence her saying don’t worry nothing illegal happened, agreeing to meet him again (but didn’t) and the sarcastic but maybe without the drugs and a billion of your mates

the men were totally wrong and its disgusting.

I can just see the lawyers using all those things she said against her. She said she agreed to two threesomes i think, and at one stage sent a text saying it wasnt illegal. She's brave to get through a lawsuit knowing shes going to have to listen to all that

i think overall she will win her lawsuit though. As she suffered financial and educational loss at the time. She dropped out of Cornell, and it affected her life

I'm surprised there's not more discussion on this on mumsnet. It's all over the news and social media this week. All my friends are talking about it

And 50 guys on the whats app group remained silent - just awful. At least one of the 7 has recently been sacked from his banking job

It really highlights the difference between men and women doesn't it. Can you imagine the reverse situation?
Free dick upstairs.
OK... no thanks?

Flamingojune · 04/10/2026 08:25

I know its appalling. What is wrong with young men

JMSA · 04/10/2026 08:28

Poor love. I really hope she gets justice and I look forward to hearing the outcome (which will hopefully be in her favour).
My teenage daughters are horrified and saddened by it, but sadly NOTHING surprises them anymore when it comes to men and what they’re capable of.

There were a couple of threads over on the feminism board last week? Although the main poster was using it as a way of getting at gender critical feminists so it got a bit derailed.

ETA: autocorrect to detailed

Flamingojune · 04/10/2026 08:58

Poor woman. Lets hope she gets justice

AhBiscuits · 04/10/2026 09:03

My son is too young, but if he were older it would spark a conversation about what he should do if he were in such a whatsapp chat. It's an important conversation to have with our boys.

Rustydogtail · 04/10/2026 09:07

I was unaware of this story until my DD18 sent it to me last week, she was raging. I'm so saddened but not surprised, the older I get the more I detest many men and their attitudes towards females.

I truly hope the poor girl does well in life and those boys/men are served their deserved punishments.

What the fuck is wrong with them and their mentality towards us?

Thecatspantaloons · 04/10/2026 09:08

Even if she doesn't get the justice she deserves, because she's not the perfect victim , I like to think that the perpetrators will never know peace ever again - because you are correct, it's all over my SM feed.

I’m surprised by this too but I know that Mumsnet often delete threads about cases like this or ongoing court cases due to legal reasons. So maybe that’s been going on, I’m not sure.

Definitely. I think their loop hole at the time that New York law states that the victim has to be virtually unconscious to not consent so its a ridiculously high bar but I'm not so sure there wasn't a time when she wasn't toward the end of the ordeal given she can't be sure from how inebriated she was.

In any case, however much she initially stated herself to be complicit is irrelevant to whether she actually was functionally incapable of it. That needs to be thoroughly investigated which it doesn't seemed to have.

The whole discourse however is a terrible reveal of how exploitative & shaming people are of women's freedoms. Its really brought out the ugly reality of where we are at.

AnnaQuayRules · 05/10/2026 03:12

Have you seen the film 'Promising Young Woman's? It's a few years old now but covers a very similar scenario. It's a remake of a 1970s film. The rape culture amongst Frat houses has been going on for years.

If you read up on how the Fraternity system works you'll realise just how horrendous these organisations are. And how they are embedded in positions of power across the States.

I really hope that justice is done in this case, and that universities start looking at the Fraternity system.

piscofrisco · 05/10/2026 06:03

The 50 men in that group chat should be named and shamed if you ask me. His could not even one of them think it wasn’t right and at least check on the woman or call the police anonymously..or something.

Cornell said yesterday that they are rethinking social societies at the institution. Too little too late.

Bringemout · 05/10/2026 06:10

I’ve been sexually assaulted before, definitely minimised it, took a little while before it sunk in. What that girl went through is fucking horrific.

This should have been immediately investigated as a serious crime.

There’s 57 of them and they have ALL been named on SM. Thankfully. Disgusting men. Again.
