Esther Ranzen has died. So many red arrows on mailonline. Don’t get it.

The best thing to do is not look at the DM. It’s a horrible, hate filled website.

morart · 30/09/2026 20:56

It’s because she knew about Saville?

TremendousFlatulence · 30/09/2026 20:57

Wouldn't be the first place I'd look for normal human reaction either. In fact I wouldn't go there at all for fear of believing that all of humanity is doomed and I know it isn't. The absolute scum of the earth are the ones that comment there and it shows.

As if DM commenters have the brains to even consider that!

Pinkballoon5 · 30/09/2026 21:00

Mailonline isn't worth thinking about. Esther Rantzen was a lovely lady, a fierce journalist, an intelligent fighter for lately the right to an assisted death and unfortunately she didn't get that although she paid for the dignitas exit. RIP Esther

WarmAleAndBlackLabrador · 30/09/2026 21:03

I think she was amazing. Are the arrows an antisemitism thing or about assisted dying? People are horrible.

i think a lot of people actually went off her when it was revealed she either knew or had serious suspicions about Savile, but did nothing despite being someone who was supposed to care about children and their safety.

DrFoxtrot · 30/09/2026 21:08

I think there’s a problem with the arrows today, some news stories are all over the place. Not that I actually care about the DM 😬😂

What about the police? They'd heard all the rumours too and they never did anything either?

The point is nobody did/said anything. So while o don’t blame any one individual for what JS did, I do understand why people might not be the biggest fan of someone who chose to say nothing. To do nothing. That includes the police, however the thread is about ER and why there are so many red arrows.

What a stupid thing to say. Of course she was far from the only person who failed to speak when she should have but that doesn’t make her silence less problematic. She was married to a man high up in the BBC and the founder of Childline and she said nothing to protect her career. A lot of people were shown up for what they really were by the Savile scandal.

Firefly1987 · 30/09/2026 21:29

@DogDaysandAfternoons so you know with absolute certainty she knew what he was doing then? Or can you go to the police on just rumours?

StolenTeapots · 30/09/2026 21:30

I met her through work. She was very proactive. Cared what I had to say. Offered to help me.

She could have went to her husband at the BBC with her concerns for a start, and yes safeguarding 101 is reporting concerning things you’ve heard so that they can be investigated. Obviously. She herself even said she should have reported it.

Fantomfartflinger · 30/09/2026 22:21

I wasn’t impressed when I read about how she had an affair with her close friends much older husband, her boss, who she subsequently married. He had children.

She was a researcher at the BBC and miraculously got the top presenter job whilst her bf/husband was the head of dept.

Marigoldsbloom · 30/09/2026 22:22

I think the arrows aren’t working

This and the fact she started child line means peoole will have very mixed feelings.

50Balesofgrey · 30/09/2026 22:24

I knew Patsy. Esther was a disgrace. She will now have to account.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 30/09/2026 22:29

Starting Childline while being friends with Savile was shady AF.

Children were NOT her priority. It was all PR.

TofuTuesday · 30/09/2026 22:32

What is a red arrow? Like an emoji meaning something unkind?

It’s a downvote like on Reddit to express your dislike of a post or story.

Yes Patsy, the first wife. Esther wrote a book saying the wife was bitter. Well yes she was betrayed by her husband and her friend.

Read she bullied her staff too.

Oh thank you, so downvoting the story about her death? I don’t know what to think - everything I know about Esther Rantzen seems to be from opinion pieces. I used to watch her on watchdog and that’s life/your life/something like that and she seemed alright.

I certainly did.

I can't see any 'arrows' but the the comments are all saying rest in peace...
Odd post.
