To want to sell the car

Sallysredshoes · 30/09/2026 08:37

Probably a bit of a long one
I think I'm being unreasonable..but I'm not convinced what DH wants to do is reasonable either .
So bought a 2 year old car ,3 months ago
Old car was electric but didn't have a long range and caused family members a lot of stress having to wait to charge it ....but I loved driving it
This new car is not electric .
We have an adult family that sometimes need driving places
I am the main driver of the car
However ...I am struggling..it's huge ,it's difficult to park
I want to sell it and put £2000 towards another electric car with a longer range.
DH says it's already lost £2000 in value since he bought it
DH wants to pay £2000 to buy me a 20 year old car to drive around town in ,and keep a 2 year old car sitting on the drive to occasionally use to ferry family about .. probably once or twice a month.
That's the bare bones of it
But there's obviously a lot more detail that would just derail the issue of what to do ..so he's happy to spend £2000 ...but not to sell the car
We are not rolling in money and it seems madness buying another car and having to tax and insure it ,plus pay for repairs on an old car

Thanks for all the messages
As I said ..I do feel I am being unreasonable.. asking him to change it ..and yes he already had to pay more because I need automatic
But id no idea how much the electric car was giving me confidence, untill it was gone .
The adult family we drive ,don't drive themselves, and DH felt the last car was to small for them to be comfortable in.
Plus stopping to charge caused them stress .
But DH always said a longer range electric car was out of our reach financially...then he turns up with this massive tank ..that I actually said was to much money..and now he wants to spend another £2000 we haven't got on another car ...so actually we could of just got a longer range electric car to start with ..
I feel a bit cross ,that he just ruled out a longer range electric car .. despite us having a charger at home ,then went and spent the same amount of money on a petrol monstrosity.
I think it goes deeper than the car .. because I'm actually really upset he doesn't seem to care about me ..I feel my needs and wants always come last in this family...but that is a whole other thread and a thread for another day

Were the charging stresses on journeys real stresses as in you had to have unplanned short notice stops in order to charge or risk running out of range and/or struggling to find appropriate chargers or perceived/irrational risks - what if we stop at our planned stop and all of the chargers were broken and then went to the next available stop and there were 100 cars queuing for the chargers which meant our stop was 17h and we miss most of our day out?

If the former the longer range car would help if it's the latter I would fear the the stresses would remain.

I would do my research, get a trade in price on yours look for a replacement car(s) and then propose a solution, either way I would say that this car isn't working for you. I would look at larger EV with better range or trading the expensive large car for a cheaper large car and a every day sized EV.

Dandeloosha · 30/09/2026 13:13

If you have a charger at home and EV with a better range is the no brainer option. Why did he even consider getting a petrol car? And why did he get a car he knew you didn’t want?

Campanulaceae · 30/09/2026 13:21

What's the car you have now?

Passaggressfedup · 30/09/2026 13:39

The dilemma of the riches! Two cars is double insurance, tax, repairs costs.

Selling a car after three months will most likely be a quite a bit of a loss.

Both options are costly, but hey ho, if you can just spare it, that's great for you.

Will tour adults learn to drive at some point?

Sallysredshoes · 30/09/2026 12:00

It's my son who is disabled
He definitely would qualify for one
But he can't drive and hates going anywhere in the car
And I'd only be able to use it for journeys that benefit him
So obviously buying him shopping and stuff ,would be ok ..
But what about when I leave the house for something not for him ,I wouldn't be able to take the car .
So we decided against that

Sorry, your son. You really need to look into this, you’re not expected to have him in the car with you for all journeys. We don’t. My daughter will never drive. Otherwise you’d have to have a second car for other journeys which rather defeats the purpose of having the motability car ! We’ve had cars via motability for around 39 years, it’s a wonderful charity and has helped us so much.

CormorantIsland · 30/09/2026 13:53

What car does your DH have? Can’t he use his car to do the occasional use that is needed, or switch cars in those occasions?

Sallysredshoes · 30/09/2026 14:30

Tessasanderson · 30/09/2026 12:46

Absolutely didnt mean to upset you so if i did i apologize.

If you are going to talk to DH make it about what you want, not what he wants.

You want a EV car. Automatic. Better range. Reasonable size.

Its not a negotiation.

No no ..you didn't upset me ..
You just sounded like my daughter..who is away on holiday and would say the same .. menopause tears .. frustrating tears that's all x

Id be worrying it was wrong ..but thanks for trying to help x

Exactly..that's why I feel I'm being unreasonable
I know we are throwing money away selling it so quickly
I've been trying so hard to just drive it ..and to be ok with it

I thought it would be ok
I thought I'd manage the bigger size
But we live in a small town and small streets and difficult parking..
I guess I should of said no at the time

I thought you said he "turned up with" the big car meaning he bought it without telling you but I can understand his frustration if you had a chance to say no and didn't? Did you not test drive it?

Sallysredshoes · 30/09/2026 14:38

I'm no nearer
I do feel really bad ,and that I'm being really difficult
And that I should be greatful for what I have ( I am greatful)
Id absolutely love the car ..if I never had to drive it ..
Hence the offer of a small cheap 20 year old car

Viviennemary · 30/09/2026 14:39

Just get a smaller normal car. I wouldnt bother with an electric car too much messing about. Don't buy a £2k car. Too much to go wrong. Get a decent car. If you're the main driver it should be your choice

He phoned me from the garage after taking it for a test drive ..it was more than we wanted to spend,so I was thinking more about that ,than if I could manage it

He alone test-drove a car you drive? Nope @Sallysredshoes you test your own. Bloody cheek of him.

Ohnobackagain · 30/09/2026 14:58

And @Sallysredshoes as others have said, doesn’t have to be electric. And if the idea of petrol bothers you, there are some excellent hybrids about (I know lots of people with Yaris Hybrid for example). And definitely look into Motability.

You can use a motability car to go to the gym. You need to be healthy to care for your disabled adult son, so it indirectly benefits him. Using the car to go shopping or to work also indirectly benefits him. He doesn't need to be with you.

Using the car to taxi your drunk mates home every weekend, wouldn't directly or indirectly benefit him so not acceptable use.

Yes, this ! Don’t overthink it . You need a car to go about your everyday life, keeping healthy and going to work to earn money benefits your son.
We’ve had motability cars for 30+ years, it’s never been a problem. I can highly recommend calling motability for advice, they are really helpful . Number is on their website.

Badbadbunny · 30/09/2026 15:37

I'd agree with your DH really. I'd spend £2k to get an old runaround and keep the main car. Yes, the big car purchase may have been a mistake but it's a done deal and you're stuck with it unless you're willing to lose a shed load of cash by part exchanging it so early after purchase. You'd probably still get £1k for the old car in 2/3 years time when you come to change the big car so it will have cost you very little, and in the meantime, you've the choice of 2 cars.

In fact that's very similar to us, but we have three cars. We have an expensive large 3 year old, a smaller/cheaper 2 year old and an 18 year old. There are three of us in the household, so we have the facility to each have a car if we all need one at the same time for different things. But in reality, we use them for different purposes. The large expensive one is mostly for long journeys, day trips, holidays, etc. The 2 year old small car is for local/family driving. The 18 year old is basically only used when we know we'll have to park in crowded car parks with narrow spaces - mainly our local hospital! The 18 year old isn't even parked at home - it's left in a driveway at my office, so also handy for me to drive home if it's rainy on a day I've walked to walk!! We don't want either of the decent cars to get scratched or dented by inconsiderate/incapable morons in car parks, so use our old banger instead, so if it gets pranged, we really don't care!

Definetly get the motability car, anybody in the family (added onto the insurance) can drive it even if your son doesn't want to drive as long as it benefits him in some indirect way.

DinoLil · 30/09/2026 15:50

I have a 17yr old car that hasn't moved until today, that was only because I had to take it for it's MOT. First time I've driven it or driven since December. I don't know why I keep it.

Tbh this car is very small. I've always had medium or small cars but the time I bought a large estate, I actually found it a million times easier to drive, park and manoeuvre than the small ones. I could reverse it into teeny spaces but can I do that with a small one? Can I heck!

Anyway, I wouldn't recommend hanging onto a car you're not going to use regularly. I'm going to get rid of mine. So sell that and get a different one. Or...you could practice and practice with the bigger car until you come to love it. Honestly, I find them so great to drive.

That's my twopenneth!

Ilikewinter · 30/09/2026 15:59

What car do you have now, and what EV would you like to swap it for?

TrippleCooked · 30/09/2026 20:38

@Sallysredshoes I can see where he’s coming from.

If you sell the car, you’re down £2k already (as he said its lost value), then he gives £2k for the new car, so total cost is £4k.

If you keep the car, he gives you £2k for new car. Total cost £2k.

Yes I see your point and my husband wants to do this
But he's already financing 4 cars fully himself..I can't ask him to finance another .
We have 4 DC..so he's paying for two of their cars and the one I'm talking about and one that he uses for work.
Either way it's more money..unless I just woman up ,and be greatful for what I have and drive the car I have
