We're getting married next year, we're not going to split up or anything and I think he's getting mine tatood.

I'd quite like to get his done in a nice discreet design as I don't like tatoos in general.

And my son will always be my son so no harm in getting that done.

What does everyone else think?

I sort of dislike tatoos because I tend to think they look gaudy and yucky, but DP has a lot and I like them on men. I'd like to make sure mine is very carefully and discreetly done.

No, naff naff naff.

Why would anyone have the name of a family member tattoed on them? In case they forget their name?

And don't go getting it done in hebrew that's even worse.

I have no idea why you would want a name tattooed on you. But at least if you do it in sanskrit or something, the chances are no-one else will realise you have got a name tattooed, they will think it is a pattern.

Or you can tell them it means "peace" or "I like cheese" or something.

Rather than just having frank stamped on your nether regions.

My SIL is divorced from my brother (we're still very close). She has her son's name tatooed on her back above her bottom. I think tatoos are awful but my husband thought about it from another angle (he would ). He said that if she's having sex with someone else from behind, for example, they would be really put off seeing her sons name on her lower back.

Kaedsmum · 01/07/2008 15:10

Ok so the general opinion is that it's tacky and common.. and I am neither.. so I've bought a necklace with his and my son's initials

..And it's not a tacky one, it's diamond and tiny...

..oooh and I just read the thing about the portrait and think that would be lovely so I'm doing that too.

Thanks!! Glad I asked. xx

i'd never get a mans name tattooed on my body, although i have my DD name tattooed on me.

QueenyEisGotTheBall · 01/07/2008 15:17

i wouldnt have the name of my DH tatooed on me but i would have my DDs name but in a nice way not a biker kind of way (you know...with a heart and a ribbon on the bottom with the name on they are vile) i have 3 tatoos and would like another less outrageous one to even it out my friend has stars outlined above her belly button with her 2 kids names in and they look really nice (not so nice if they have been stretched out by pregnancy though so i would have to get it elsewhere one of my tatoos is on the bottom right of my belly and it was ruined by my enormous size during my preg!!)
if you want to get the names tatooed on you then go ahead and dont worry about what others think as its your body so therefore your choice/canvas

I think some tatoos can look nice, depends where and what they are. I personally am tatoo free but three of my ex's had my name on their arms. I went mad at the last one as it was only 3 years ago and we split the year after.

UnquietDad · 01/07/2008 15:28

I'm really hoping their names are not Montmorency and Alexander Featherstone-Cholmondley. Or you're in for a lot of pain. And will need to have a very big arse.

TinkerbellesMum · 01/07/2008 15:32

My brother has his partner and daughters on one hand and sons on the other, just words from his wrist along his index finger (he also has a GF on his arm and another in Chinese on his chest )

I've heard of a woman whose husband put their children's pictures on her leg and she cuts her jeans up to show them off!

It's your body and if you want to do that go for it!

TinkerbellesMum · 01/07/2008 15:39

I just remembered, my brothers Chinese tattoo is in two characters. He told his current partner that it was "Mum" and "Dad". A little later my sister accidentally (not knowing) said what it really said!

UQD

The Op's name is Kaedsmum so there's a bit of a clue... although it's possible her DS is called Kaed Montmorency Alexander etc.
