We're getting married next year, we're not going to split up or anything and I think he's getting mine tatood.

I'd quite like to get his done in a nice discreet design as I don't like tatoos in general.

And my son will always be my son so no harm in getting that done.

What does everyone else think?

I sort of dislike tatoos because I tend to think they look gaudy and yucky, but DP has a lot and I like them on men. I'd like to make sure mine is very carefully and discreetly done.

*initials, even oops.

pointydog · 30/06/2008 19:05

If you ask mn about tattoos, don't expect many people to be in favour.

Doodle2U · 30/06/2008 19:05

Y'll look a right scrubber in the old people's home.

moondog · 30/06/2008 19:05

Aye, and that too Bundle

Quattrocento · 30/06/2008 19:06

There is an almost 50% likelihood that you will split up with your other half. Greater than that for a second marriage. Them's high odds.

There is an almost 50% probability that you will be overweight when you are over 45. I can't remember what the exact statistic is. Anyhow tattoos on blubbery people are the most yuck-making thing imaginable.

Mind you, I can't imagine such a thing as a tasteful tattoo so I am biased. Ignore me.

Blandmum · 30/06/2008 19:07

Why? Are you expecting a bout of amnesia?

Bundle · 30/06/2008 19:08

lol mb

tbh i'd rather be lardy and tatt-free than skinny with tattoos

maidamess · 30/06/2008 19:08

lol MB

Kimi · 30/06/2008 19:08

Personally I don't like them and would not have one, I think if you do get one somewhere that covers up is a good place.

LittleMissBliss · 30/06/2008 19:09

I think a large percentage of my generation will be pearced, tattooed the lot in the old peoples home! and we'll all compare our smudges and holes! But to be honest I think you'll have allot more to be ashamed about when your older, like someone having to take you to the loo, possibly feeding you.....

OverMyDeadBody · 30/06/2008 19:12

ha ha ha ha ha at "we're not going to split up or anything". Actually, there's a pretty big chance that you will. And then you'll have to go around for the rest of your life with an ex's name tattoo'd onto you, like one wanker ex of mine has.

lizandlulu · 30/06/2008 19:15

martiambishop. lol, thats what my mum says. i have dd's name on the inside of my wrist and she says 'why have that done, is it in case you forget?'

Quattrocento · 30/06/2008 19:16

I am trying to imagine a scenario when tattoos look nice. All I am succeeding in doing is working out when tattoos look horrid. Maybe this approach will help.

  1. Tattoos look horrid on anyone overweight
  2. Tattoos look horrid on anyone unattractive
  3. Tattoos look horrid on anyone over about 25
  4. Tattoos look horrid on anyone without good muscle tone
  5. Tattoos look horrid when they are too big
  6. Tattoos look horrid when they are badly designed
  7. Tattoos look horrid on very pale people
  8. Tattoos look horrid on very over made up and sluttish looking people (both genders)
  9. Tattoos look horrid on people with ankle chains
10. Tattoos look horrid on people with big and nasty dogs (eg rottweilers) 11. Tattoos make people look as though they have spent time in prison. Which may of course be the look you are aiming for.

In fact I think tattoos look horrid unless on very young beautiful people in an art-house film. So maybe I could have just said it all with "Tattoos look horrid".

MsDemeanor · 30/06/2008 19:18

I think it will look absolutely hideous, and why, why, why?? it's not like it means you love them more!

samsonthecat · 30/06/2008 19:21

No don't do it. My FIL has a name on his arm and its not MIL. It is a bit of a sore point with them as it is an ex girlfriend from his teens.

scottishmum007 · 30/06/2008 19:21

2 words - tempting fate

TigerFeet · 30/06/2008 19:25

My dh's name is Kevin. Can you imagine spending the rest of your life with "Kevin" permanently emblazoned somewhere about your person? Much as I love him, it ain't gonna happen.

Don't do it OP. It's naff and unneccessary, even if he has a nice name

makes me sad people think this about tattoos. I don't have any but would love 3 TINY stars somewhere - one for each of my angels I lost.

I would not get a name however, because of the risk of breaking up thing.

i am absolutely covered in tattoos. i personally think women with false nails, bleached hair, fake tan and tit jobs are grim. Luckily i have been brought up nicely and manage to keep my opinions to myself.

your body, if you generally don't like the idea, then don't do it, if you are going to do it anyway, then get a nice cursive script for your dcs names, preferably somewhere easily covered and if you want to get something for your OH, get something that represents him, rather than 'kevin' on your arse. I have ivy on my arm in remembrance of my late mother, and tattoos that i associate with the meaning of my dcs names. Although i probably have around 30% - 40% coverage with my tattoos, i have never had a mans name tattooed on me, and i never will.

OK, am I missing something. You don't LIKE tattoos yet you are thinking about getting one? How odd. I don't like marmite so I don't buy it. I never think about buying it and eating it on the off chance I might like it one day.
