AIBU to feel guilty after my emotionally abusive ex died?

I found out my ex killed himself , I dated him for a year, we had been on and off. The relationship I felt was becoming really unhealthy as it went on and in the end told him this, that I could not do it anymore as my mental health was starting too with how he was becoming. I tried to leave, he would not take no or the break up. If I blocked, Showing up at my door and it went on longer the relationship than I thought.. I had cared for him and at the start it wasn’t like that. The more this went on..

I’d then try remain friends as we got on well with each other the other side but then he would run with that and would become more and more controlling and pushing things forward. When we were together if I said no to sex or didn’t feel up to it, he would make me feel guilty for it and blame ans at times also would continue. I kept wanting to get out but I felt I could not, if I stayed I was damned if I left I was..well I thought it would stop it all but not this outcome.
In the year I felt it moved fast he wanted to marry me eventually brought it up a few times, wanted to live together. Said I was his soul mate. He had an ex prior to that of 11 years and she had left due to mental health drifting apart. She moved on first then he matched with me not long after he seen her with someone else. I felt a rebound when he first said but we were seeing each other so much and he was being quite serious about us, plans and had said he got on so much better with me, which I found but he convinced me. Often he’d book holidays last minute just to spend time together or want to be with each other all the time. He wanted to stay with me often and do things together. I feel as in the past he had threatened to kill himself when I was feeling uncomfortable and said space would be good, I then convinced him to come back and he was all fine like nothing had happened (just so I apologised) then it would be back to how much he loved me. There was times I was low with my previous ex and he would see that and sometimes make situation worse dig in deeper. Mentally I was becoming drained and even if I made eye contact with someone on a plane he would say I wanted to be with them

His family or friends never contacted me about the death which I didn’t think they would but my psychologist went did no one tell you? I didn’t expect to because I blame me, I feel they are all blaming me for it deep down. As he spiralled and the messages I was getting, If I had stayed with him he’d still be here today. He was happy and kept saying about this life together..After the break up this time I didn’t respond but I never blocked him a few days of long worded texts. I wanted to reach out so many times because there was so many memories but then there was this other side. The last thing he said was I had broke him and scarred him. These are the last words I have and then weeks later that was it. Since breaking up I have been told I was dealing with emotional abuse but at the same time, I feel awful. His family are left with this view of me that I broke him. He said he was going to tell them the truth about me, that I was a cheat which again I felt?

The last song he listened to was also directed at me (was logged in still) he liked speaking through music
He had a child and I just feel why did he not stay for them..i know many but he could have found love again?
I don’t know how he did it and i’m wondering if there was a letter or if he was in pain for long, I cant reach out to friends etc i’ll never know but I haven’t stopped crying or thinking about everything

I am sorry to post here, I just feel lost and have huge regret,
at one time he told me if I moved on when he was alive he would have killed that person or beat them up.

He sounds like a very troubled and unwell mentally person who is hopefully now at peace.

Wish him Bon Voyage. Let him go.

You would have made absolutely no difference in his life and ultimate suicide.

No one is responsible for another persons happiness.
Millions of people experience break-ups but don’t end up taking their own lives.
Please don’t spend your life feeling guilty😔

Sweetheart, this man was profoundly troubled long before he met you. He allowed his troubles to land on you and tried to own you. Thats one of the very worst things you can do to another human being. He had no right to do that.

It is profoundly shocking when an ex suicides and it will stay with you and scar you. No one reaches the end of their life unscathed - some more than others. But one day you will see that his life, and his death, did not rest on you. It belonged to him, and him only.

Weep. Grieve. But the guilt is not yours to carry. If you had stayed with him, he would have put you through Hell. Its an incredible hard fact that some things really are out of our control, and you had the terrible bad luck to end up attached to a very troubled man.

Billy47 · 29/09/2026 07:04

You are not responsible for his choices. You are not responsible for his mental health. You are responsible for your own happiness, mental health, wellbeing and choices. You can not sacrifice your own life because of what someone else might choose to do with their.

Yeah, this is what I don’t get. He couldn’t cope with the thought of us not being together but never did I expect him to do this

It was never your job or responsibility to hold him together. He was too troubled to be in a relationship and not able to be happy on his own. None of that was your fault. It’s very very sad, but you have nothing to feel guilty for.

TurtleMcTurtle · 29/09/2026 09:03

If I’m reading your OP correctly, he was your rapist. It was not a healthy relationship at all and you did well to get out.

That aside, mental health is an illness like any other. Saying “I could have prevented his suicide” is equal to saying “I could have cured his cancer”. If you’re honestly telling me you have the capability to cure cancer, well that’s amazing, please share your good work with the world.

If you’re not saying you can cure cancer, why do you think you’d be able to cure mental illness? They would honestly be equal achievements, so if you understand that you don’t have the capability to cure cancer, please understand that you do not have the capability to cure mental illness either.

This is not on you.

I used to work on acute MH wards and so have a lot of experience with suicide. Believe me when I say, suicide is always the decision and the responsibility of the person committing it. Which the exception of the time when such person is deemed to lack capacity to make this decision, in which case they are typically sectioned and then it is up to the hospital staff to keep them safe from harm.
A person who experiences suicidal ideations will often blame family, friends, lovers, organisations or circumstances for their decision but it doesn't mean that this is true. The only person responsible for the act is the person committing the act.
Would it make him happy if you stayed with him? I doubt it. But even if it did, his happiness is not your responsibility. Especially if it comes at the expense of yours.
You can't change the past, it already happened. You need to disengage from this and move forward. I hope you will see it when grief settles.

Yeah, I just wish he had coped better with us ending, as it seemed he just couldn’t take me breaking up and I feel so

Yeah? I guess if I had stayed with him as he had changed from how he was at start and getting more controlling, I would have been struggling with my own mental health as it was knocking me. I still can’t believe he made this decision. It’s like he actually wanted me to feel guilt too with how everything was set up, one final :/

Put simply this.

fumingrightnow1 · 29/09/2026 17:39

I think guilt is a natural part of the grieving process with suicide. I felt the exact same after my bf suicide. Obviously rationally its not your fault and everyone will tell you the same but maybe its something you need to go through just like anger, sadness ect to be able to heal. Talk to your therapist about it and maybe look online on sites like i think its called sobs survivors of bereavement of suicide. A bereavement from suicide is not the same as any other death as there is this whole other layer to it. Be kind to yourself x

It isn't impossible that your intuition is correct, @HeartyKoala Your ex was clearly a very angry man. I've seen this once at a distance - the man deliberately left notes blaming his ex, who had left after surviving a lot of abuse.

It might help you to read the "Why does he do that" book. Actually, I think that that might help a lot.
