DH doing DIY in the middle of the night

DH and I are currently renovating our house in West Sussex along with DD7 and DS5.

Our house is not in great shape since we bought it from a couple of boomers who had no dosh and hadn't worked in any meaningful way since the late 90s (Thames Water shares apparently+employment at a random merchant bank) so there is a lot of renovation to complete.

Anyway, on Saturday I found DH in his skimpies and a pair of goggles in the pool at 3am trying to unblock a drain.

The previous weekend I found DH on the floor at 1.30am, after we had watched Slow Horses, like a worm with a tube of silicone sealant (wrong colour) around the loo in the third bathroom.

And the weekend before that he was in the garage dressed in a make-shift beekeeping jacket (bin liner) trying to take down a wasps nest.

When my DMIL+DFIL came a month ago for supper with their DGC, DH decided it was an opportune moment to hang William Morris wallpaper in the orangery.

AIBU to say No! DH cannot continue his ridiculous DIY capers?

Don't know why the financial history of the previous owners is relevant.

Those jobs don't sound noisy, so not sure what the problem is.

It’s certainly batshit worthy to complain about your DH to be trying to improve the property without being moaner at to do it

SoSoLong · 28/09/2026 21:07

Are you trying to be funny or something?

Millytante · 28/09/2026 21:16

‘Boomers’ who work in random merchant banks are just the worst, are they not?
As Slow Horses fans you are clearly pretty cool. Anti-establishment, quirky types. Family money. Merchant banks, indeed! Shares in utilities! 🙄.
And curse them anyway for selling you your house, your house in West Sussex no less, with fascinating problems council house dwellers cannot boast about.

I think if you added a bit about your multi-talented DH already being pursued by local beauties whose blandishments you laugh off confidently because the absurd, silly man simply adores you, you'd have a good chance of a Daily Mail (or even Telegraph) column within weeks.

I’d just be pleased he was doing it tbh.

Pool, Wm Morris, orangery, and bonus points for the Country Life wasps’ nest!

Pedallleur · 28/09/2026 21:22

Has got a 'special' OF site and this is how he entertains his subscribers?

AllTheToddlers · 28/09/2026 21:23

It’s the start of an episode of baywatch. I would go crazy at someone being I the pool messing with a drain with no one knowing they’re there .

But agree the background wealth of the previous owners and your pool/orangery status is what we’re posting for.

FlippingGiraffe · 28/09/2026 21:24

AIBU to ask what the fuck is an orangery? 😂

And “supper”!

StepawayfromtheLindors · 28/09/2026 21:27

And “third bathroom”. Definitely Bingo 😉

PocketBattleship · 28/09/2026 21:28

Nobody's used the word "dosh" in about as long.

Kin el! Well at least now I know ey, though no doubt OP has an actual orchard somewhere in the 100 acres they own ;)

Glass lean-to with notions 🤣

Megamegablahblah · 28/09/2026 21:34

The only relevant thing is whether the DIY is any good.

CremeDeMure · 28/09/2026 21:35

Is this meant to be a bad parody of Jilly Cooper?

Nobody's shagged their riding instructor in the orangery yet, as far as we know.

SoThatsTheWayItIs · 28/09/2026 21:41

When we had a wasps nest DH just kept running past it with some spray he bought off Amazon. Randomly shouting “cunts”. Fortunately he was not in his skimpies but did not have the wherewithal to don a makeshift beekeeper suit.

Like a big greenhouse that posh people used to grow fruit and show off to peasants.

dreamingofgoodhair · 28/09/2026 21:45

Do orangeries have room for wallpaper? William Morris or not , they’re mainly glass aren’t they ?

Millytante · 28/09/2026 21:45

Megamegablahblah · 28/09/2026 21:34

The only relevant thing is whether the DIY is any good.

Her dahling man won’t be undertaking the substantive tasks involved in the ‘renovation’, merely those with comedy potential
There’ll be a ‘little man’ from West Wittering recommended by a rather famous local resident (lips sealed) who is a marvellous carpenter, and can turn his hand to anything, bless him.

Arlanymor · 28/09/2026 21:46

You didn’t mention what car DMIL + DFIL arrived in, nor which private schools Persimmon and Satsuma (assuming they are the names of the grandkids) go to.

4/10 for effort.
