How often on average do people get colds and flu?

This is NOT a stealth boast - I haven’t had a cold for 3 years and I am actually quite worried about it. I know that’s ridiculous - but I am worried it’s been so long, when I do get it- if will be bad!

My partner seems to be ill all the bloody time- he’s always got a cold or some bug. I work at a uni and I am wondering if I have just developed a good immune system as have been around students a lot over a long time.

Anyway- what is the ‘norm’? I have probably had flu twice in my life and both times when my kids were little and I was tired etc. I think that’s fairly normal to only have flu rarely.

Anyway- it’s weirdly bothering me. Obviously I don’t want to be ill but I am worried it’s been a while and it will be worse when it comes 🤪

It would be interesting if we could compare being exposed to a cold virus and actually coming down with symptoms. I have been known to eat either very healthily indeed or just mainline ice creme. Colds which develop when in eating all the rubbish tend to last a lot longer than when I’m eating my 30day variety of fresh fruit and veg. Then, it’s not unusual to go to bed with a ‘tickle’ at my throat and wake up the next day having totally got rid of it.

no schoolchildren household helps a lot too. The teachers in my book group tend to have permanent colds in term time.

I’ve only had the flu once when I was ten and I’ve never been vaccinated. I get colds every year, probably 1-3 usually during winter but I have had them in summer before too. I tend to get one really bad one each year that goes to my chest.

This is true. There’s a few occasions each year where I’ll feel like a cold is definitely starting but it amounts to nothing whereas my DH, DC or colleagues will have full blown symptoms.

I have had flu once - when I was 13, over 50 years ago.

I get a couple of colds every year, but they are only ever mild - I might get a sore throat, a stuffed up nose and/or a bit of cough, but they are never bad enough to make me feel ill.

As far as I know I only had Covid once. I had a stuffed up nose and that was it.
