AIBU to be annoyed by a neighbour’s very loud car exhaust?

Somebody who lives nearby has a car with the loudest exhaust! It wouldn't be too bad if they got in their car and just went. It's the fact they sit in it for a few minutes with the engine on which then wakes people up 😬 Same on a night time. They come home and then piss about.

Grr!

Yep we have a neighbour like this. He couldn't give a shit. He lives right next to old folk bungalows and they are terrified of him. He also has just acquired a quad bike which is even louder. He's a nasty chav who likes to throw his weight around

SenMum91 · 26/09/2026 09:37

Stick a potato in his exhaust tonight. That will teach a valuable lesson.

OhBettyCalmDown · 27/09/2026 19:46

We have one of these people next door too. Love it when he goes to the gym at 5:30/6am. Even more during the summer when the windows open 🙄

Cantthinkofanewusernameffs · 27/09/2026 19:52

My neighbour has one of those exhausts that sounds like the car is back firing every 30 seconds.
The dog thinks it's fireworks going off and hides in a corner, trembling.

He's a middle aged man as well. I'd have thought he'd have grown out of it by now. (Yes that's ageist, but I don't care. It's something you expect of teenagers.)

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 27/09/2026 19:59

My neighbour does this, albeit not at night. He has a sports car which he is obsessed with and spends ages polishing. It has a noisy engine which he usually revs for about 30 seconds before driving off. Attention-seeking dick!

YANBU. We have idiots like this in our neighbourhood with the popping/exploding/banging/shrieking exhausts. Trying to enjoy your garden on a nice day is a trial. They go round and round in a circuit just for buggery's sake. If I could buy one and get away with it, I'd have one of those stinger things that the police use to take the tyres out and would take great pleasure in using it. Selfish, knuckle-dragging scroats 😡

FunPreventionOfficer · 27/09/2026 20:10

If it wakes “people” up have the collective considered approaching the car owner to discuss it with them?

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 27/09/2026 20:12

What's with the revving once parked then switch off
Just park the fucking thing and go inside like any other normal person.

You can buy packs of individual stinger spikes online. They are sold as anti protection devices.

Obviously you must absolutely categorically never use them for any other purpose than the security of your own car.

council noise police?

Ooooh, naturally! That would be VERY naughty ..... 😉

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 28/09/2026 13:07

You should try living around here lol. People driving fast up and down in noisy cars. They think its brands hatch! And beeping all the f-ing time. I had my
car door open whilst I got my
bag and body in- beep beep! Honestly people are selfish. And it would be such a turn off to date someone with one of those cars

DesperateforSunshine · 28/09/2026 14:13

Does it have a grill fitted overnight?

akkakk · 28/09/2026 14:45

If someone has a sports car and revs it up before setting off - they are likely to be damaging the engine - you should wait until the oil is up to the right temperature before taking the car much above a couple of thousand revs...

If you have a turbo fitted, then letting it run for a couple of minutes after parking is actually sensible as it cools down various components and is good for the engine... however revving it at that point is counter-productive...

most newish sports cars will be likely to have an exhaust switch which switches between the exhaust flap open or closed - which means that they have the ability to choose how much noise is being made... most with the exhaust flap closed are comparatively quiet when setting off - manufacturers are very aware of the noise concerns and have tough standards to meet...

if a car has an always noisy exhaust and louder than normal - especially if the car doesn't look expensive (porsche / ferrari / bugatti / etc.) then it is probably an after market exhaust (you can often tell because the outlet at the back will be much bigger than normal) - which probably means that it will not meet it's manufacturer sound levels and can be reported...

even loud exotic cars (e.g. the above / maclarens / some jags / maseratis / etc.) are actually quite a civilised growling noise rather than a loud intrusive noise... unless under load, which they should never be on a driveway, or in urban area speed limits

Yep, got one like this

Its a great big 4x4 BMW thing, and when it starts outside our house it physically hurts DS2’s/my ears

Apparently her DH “insisted” on it 😡

And she parks too fucking close all the time. I need to win the lottery so we can move somewhere with a driveway
